every day
KAP’s business activities take place in an industrial space,
yet its products and services are integrated into everyday life.

Six divisions provide products and services to customers which ultimately end up in their homes, their places
of work and in the daily commute of ordinary people. We touch people’s lives by providing a broad range
of essential products and services – from delivering fuel to making mattresses. We also believe in making
a positive difference in the communities in which we operate and we have therefore partnered with sani2c
to continue to support the many people’s lives the event touches along the route and throughout the race.
Message from the
race director
Farmer Glen
Every so often – whether
admiring the peaks of the
Drakensberg in the distance,
breathing in the distinctive
agricultural aromas of the
Midlands, or feeling the misty
spray of the ocean on my cheeks
– I realise again how fortunate I
am to be part of the community
that has, over the past 12 years,
worked together to create a
mountain bike stage race that is
now the world’s biggest event of
its kind. It is not just magnificent
KwaZulu-Natal and its natural
bounty and boundless diversity
that distinguish KAP sani2c. It is
the energy and passion of all the
people involved.
From the grassy foothills of
Sani Pass, through the shady
forests near Donnybrook, across
the lush pastures of countless
cows, down the awe-inspiring
Umkomaas Valley, past sugarcane
fields that wave gently in
the breeze as far as the eye can
see, and onto the shimmering
sands of Scottburgh, the route is
the result of years of dedication,
commitment and hard work by
our route builders. For 12 years,
they have put their hearts, minds
and bodies into sani2c – their
sani2c – with the shared vision:
to give you the ride of your life!
Then there is the eager sani2c
community of landowners,
farmers, local villagers and their
families and friends who not
only give us access to their land
and time, but also demonstrate
a special kind of hospitality
and old-world charm seldom
experienced these days. They
are the ones who feed and water
you along the way. They will
encourage you with country-folk
humour and make you laugh,
regardless of how badly your
legs might be burning. They are
among the many people you will
meet during sani2c. They are the
ones you and your teammate
will tell friends and family about
months after the event is over.

For sure, sani2c countryside
is splendid, but so are sani2c
people: from the many unsung
heroes who have worked on
sections of the 261km course,
to the directors of companies
who have had the foresight to
invest in the sani2c vision. It is
the combination of these two
entities that makes the event
unforgettable and keeps many
of you coming back year after
year.
So, firstly, I extend my
appreciation and gratitude
to the communities and
landowners along the route
who work extremely hard for
their worthy organisations.
Without them and their passion
for the event, sani2c would not
have grown as it has. With their
enthusiasm, commitment and
hard work, the race continues
to inspire and benefit many
people from both within their
communities and beyond. With
their support, we are able to
continually upgrade the event
and the route, which, in turn,
enables us to further assist
communities in the area.
Another group of people who
are indispensable to the sani2c
experience are our sponsors and
partners. It goes without saying
(I say it anyway) that the event
would be a lesser experience
without their prudence,
dedication and support.
Many of you will be asking
who KAP is. KAP Industrial
Holdings Limited is a JSE-listed
company, which we are proud
to have as our sani2c B-BBEE
partner. A key consideration
in KAP’s decision to partner
with sani2c is the strong social
upliftment objectives of the
event. In fact, KAP has had
a longstanding involvement
with sani2c through its PG
Bison timber operations in the
KwaZulu-Natal region.
Fittingly, it was the PG Bison
floating bridge that initiated our
relationship. This innovative,
first-of-its-kind structure has
become an internationally
recognised feature of the sani2c
route. Now, some 12 years later,
we are innovatively bridging
the gap further by supporting
sani2c communities through
our CSI and B-BBEE partnership
with KAP and its brands.
Chief Executive Officer for
KAP, Gary Chaplin will support
riders at the event. Please
thank him wholeheartedly
when you meet him, but, more
importantly, let’s work together
to convince him to ride the
2017 KAP sani2c!
Of course, without all our
other sponsors, we would be
unable to add all the extras
that ultimately benefit the
event. To all of them, I offer
a hearty thank you for their
continued support.
Then there are the riders… To
the first timers, I hope you have
a great introductory ride and
that sani2c lives up to all your
expectations. It is wonderful
to see more and more women
riding each year. It is also great
to see so many men’s teams
come back – intact – each
year for their annual challenge,
more pleasure and, of course,
a little pain. Thank you. We are
humbled by your continued
support of our event.
Of course, ultimately, KAP
sani2c is all about the riding.
That’s what makes it a success
for everyone involved. Once
again, we continue to work hard
to innovate and incorporate
new features to keep the event
fresh and exciting for riders,
sponsors and our valued sani2c
communities.
Thank you again, one and
all, for your dedication and
commitment to continuing
to make the event better and
better over the past 12 years.
Life may not be all downhill,
but it is one helluva ride!
a warm
welcome
from
kap
Gary Chaplin,
CEO of KAP
Industrial
KAP has had a longstanding
involvement
in the organisation of
sani2c through its PG Bison
subsidiary and its staff
who live and operate in the
Creighton and surrounding
area. As a result of this
history, KAP has an
appreciation of the original
intention of the event,
which was to raise funds
for a local school.
The evolution of sani2c
into a world-class event,
which remains committed to
uplifting communities, has
coincided with the growth
of KAP to the extent that we
are now able to increase our
involvement in the event.
We have created a
B-BBEE partnership
with sani2c that will
maintain and further
facilitate projects aimed
at benefiting communities
along the route in terms of
employment opportunities,
enterprise development
and social upliftment in
the area. We trust that this
partnership will also provide
some sense of security to
Farmer Glen and his sani2c
team in terms of their vision
of creating sustainable
value for these communities
into the future.
In the same way that you
will be exposed to how this
event touches the lives
of the communities, we
hope to also expose you to
some of the ways in which
the various subsidiaries
of KAP are integrated into
everyday life through the
home that you live in, the
vehicle that you drive, the
food that you eat and the
water that you drink.
We are very excited
about this new partnership,
and we wish you all a
safe and enjoyable ride.
We also encourage you
to stay committed to the
event – your enthusiasm
and support of sani2c and
Farmer Glen’s vision adds
real value to the many
people’s lives along the way.
about sani2c
kap and sani2c
KAP has had a longstanding
involvement
with sani2c through its
PG Bison timber operations
in the KwaZulu-Natal region.
As sani2c has grown into a
world-class event, so too has
KAP grown into a leading South
African industrial company,
thereby enabling it to increase
its involvement in this event.
“A key consideration in
our decision to partner with
sani2c is the strong social
upliftment objectives of the
event,” explains Gary Chaplin,
CEO of KAP. sani2c employs
people from 12 communities
along the route to assist in the
organisation of the event, and
contributes to various schools,
charities and environmental
groups in the region. This
results in more than R9 million
10 | sani2c 2016

about sani2c
per annum being injected
directly into the communities
along the route and a further
R48 million (SA Tourism)
estimated to be spent in
the region as a result of the
three rides. “It is fantastic to
be involved in a world-class
event of this nature with such
a strong social conscience, it
really aligns with our culture,”
concludes Chaplin.
Both KAP and sani2c are
equally excited about the new
partnership. “We have had a
long-term indirect relationship
with KAP, initially through the
PG Bison brand,” says Farmer
Glen. “Fittingly it was the PG
Bison floating bridge which
initiated our relationship.
This innovative first-of-a-kind
structure has become a world
recognisable feature of sani2c.
Now some 12 years later we are
again innovatively bridging the
gap by further supporting the
sani2c communities through
our CSI and B-BBEE partnership
with KAP and its brands.”
“Over the 12 years our
relationship with KAP through
its brands has grown to where
we see it today. Unknowingly
we purchased over 6 000
mattresses for the event from
KAP’s Vitafoam brand in the
early years,” he continues.
What is KAP?
KAP is a JSE-listed company
primarily focussed on industrial
operations in South Africa, and
with strong exposure in 11 other
African countries. The group
employs approximately 18 500
people across six key divisions,
which focus on logistics and
manufacturing.
These include specialised
logistics services of essential
goods, passenger transport,
integrated timber operations,
resin and PET production, the
mission statement
Driven by the commitment to achieve an extraordinary
event, our purpose is twofold:
1
To responsibly organise a multi-day, paired mountain
bike event that attracts the interest of both local and
international competitors. We aim to bring the challenge of
this multi-disciplined event within reasonable reach of all
levels of athlete.
2
Through associated sponsorship and media interest, we aim
to promote employment through tourism and conservation
of this area for the benefit of its people and the event. By
co-involvement of the local communities, we strive towards
creating jobs where local worthy organisations are paid by
the event to provide services to the event and thereby raise
funds for their organisation. The event will strive to educate,
upskill and develop innovative ways to create opportunities
for previously unemployed local residents along its route.
about sani2c
T
he crew, sponsors,
partners, helpers and
riders at sani2c will aspire
to these timeless principles of
mountain biking. At sani2c we
feel that this code of values is
what has made our sport great.
We will show respect to
1all. Landowners, other trail
users and local inhabitants
are often inconvenienced by
us. We will show them respect
and appreciation. We will greet
everyone we pass.
We will show respect to
2the environment. We will
be environmentally responsible.
We will not litter. We will do
things to offset our carbon
footprint. We will set an example
and make a difference so our
children do the same.
16 | sani2c 2016
timeless principles
We will never take things
3 for granted. Many people
wish they could ride a mountain
bike. Some can’t afford it, some
do not have the drive, ability,
mobility or health to attempt it,
and others simply cannot get
in. We will never expect to be
entitled to anything.
We will never complain
4or be critical unless we
can be constructive. Everyone
is trying their best but some
factors, such as the weather,
we cannot control. Sometimes,
despite the best intentions,
things don’t go right.
We will never be negative.
5 We cannot control the
weather or change some terrain.
We are at the mercy of the
elements and our sport is called

about sani2c
mountain biking – there are some
hills we have to use. Sometimes
it rains and there is mud, other
times it is dusty. Life is not all
downhill. We will remain positive
when the going is tough.
Our life has greater
6purpose than just having
fun. In time we will all appreciate
that sani2c is more than just a
three-day ride. Its greatest joy
will not come from our three days
of riding, but in realising that we
help many others in more ways
than we know.
We will never be selfish. We
7will share, for the betterment
of our sport and our broader
community. We will share our
ideas and our trails. We won’t
make the cows stampede, the
horses bolt and the runners move
over, and we will try not to terrify
the walkers. We will appreciate
that fellow riders on their bikes
have right of way. Pushers and
slower riders need to move aside.
People with manners smile, greet
and move over.
We will all seek to be
8excellent in all that we
do. At sani2c we all strive to
surprise ourselves in what we
can achieve. We will all (crew,
sponsors, partners and riders)
be hardworking, train hard, be
well prepared and diligent in
all that we do.
We will be real friends to our
9brothers and sisters. At sani2c
we will all be honest, trustworthy,
well organised, respectful,
considerate, kind and thoughtful.
We will express appreciation and be
responsible, reliable and dependable.
We will appreciate that
10 there are absolutes. Some
things are just plain wrong.
Let’s not lose this code of values that
has made our sport great. It’s up to us!
about sani2c
beneficiaries & communities
race passes through
many rural areas on its route
between the Sani Pass and
the Indian Ocean. Various worthy
beneficiaries that reside and/
or operate along the route were
nominated as such by sponsors,
communities, entrants and the
organisers. They were consequently
offered the opportunity to add
value to the race by helping with
the many logistical operations
incurred by an event of this
magnitude. Activities in this regard
include course preparation, bike
washing, seconding/feed tables,
erecting of overnight race villages,
catering, etc.
The sani2c policy on community
aid is not to issue donations as such,
but rather to offer various worthy
institutions the opportunity to add
value to the event and raise funds
for themselves at the same time.
T
he
18 | sani2c 2016

about sani2c
sani2c covers any costs that
are incurred by these activities
and also pays the beneficiaries
a pre-negotiated fee for their
involvement and services.
We find that this policy works
extremely well. Projects are
self-driven and beneficiaries are
highly motivated and passionate
about the event.
During the history of the
event the following has been
distributed to the various
beneficiaries of sani2c:
2005 - In excess of R325 000
2006 - More than R1,25 million
2007 - R1,6 million
2008 - With the two events,
in excess of R3,15 million
2009 - R4,2 million
2010 - R4,6 million
2011 - R4,8 million
2012 - R6,2 million with
addition of the Trail
2013 - R6,6 million
2014 - R6,8 million
2015 - R8,3 million
Further to this, an estimated
R4 million is spent by entrants
purely on accommodation (pre
and post the events) in the
Underberg and Scottburgh areas
alone. KwaZulu-Natal tourism
estimates that sani2c generates
over R48 million for the region
and a further R8 million is
generated for the country by
international competitors.
In addition, the building of
permanent race villages has
created job opportunities for
the neighbouring rural people
in an area where employment
is desperately needed. The
projects at Jolivet and Glencairn
have so far created close to
18 000 man days. In many cases
locals have been upskilled and
employed as builders, tilers,
carpenters and plumbers.
about sani2c
more than just a ride
The model for sani2c has always been twofold: to provide riders with a near-perfect experience
– and to benefit the area and its people. Here are some of the community success stories…
Building a future
Petro Sosiba grew up in Umkomaas Valley and was educated at
Msayana School, one of sani2c’s long-standing beneficiaries. He
started working on the farm as a general labourer but is now Farmer
Glen’s right-hand man. Thanks to him and his phenomenal talents
the race villages are what they are today. His latest project has been
to manage the building of the new Barn at Glencairn Farm, which is
ready to welcome riders for the 2016 event.
about sani2c
Tiling for
tomorrow
Musa Ncgobo is from Jolivet,
home of sani2c’s Stage 2
overnight race village. In 2015,
Tile Africa partnered with
sani2c and has contributed
over 5 000m 2 of tiles,
adhesive and grout towards
the continued upgrading and
building of permanent race
villages at both Glencairn
Farm and Jolivet. But not only
has Tile Africa assisted with
materials, more importantly,
its contribution has benefited
and uplifted members of
the Jolivet community. Tile
Africa made it possible to
up-skill three tilers, one of
whom was Musa. Musa has
now started his own tiling
business, employing a team
that not only lays tiles for
sani2c, but also works in and
around Durban. Tile Africa
was fundamental in creating
this opportunity.
Every dog has its day
In March 2016, sani2c funded an animal sterilisation and
vaccination weekend held at Jolivet. Together with Rural
Animal Welfare (an organisation started by Ixopo/Highflats
locals Sally Hayter and Glynnis Shewan) and local vets,
98 animals were sterilised and 402 dogs inoculated and
treated. The positive impact on both the people and the
animals in the rural community of Jolivet is enormous and
sani2c wishes to continue its partnership with Rural Animal
Welfare in the months and years to come.
putting down roots
sani2c aligns itself with environmental sustainability
and runs an innovative tree planting programme that
involves numerous local landowners. The unique
model for the programme starts with voluntary
donations from riders and sponsors that generates a
pool from which around 3 000 saplings are purchased
each year. Local landowners are then approached and
offered the opportunity to plant these trees on their
land, and urged to ensure their survival and well-being.
This way riders have a stake in the environmental
well-being of the region. They can enjoy the shade on
each of their trees, and watch them grow, knowing
that year round that indigenous tree is playing its role
in the local ecology, providing shelter for birds and
shade for the cattle.
about sani2c
Landowners
& Riders
KAP sani2c has permission to access the property
it traverses during the days of the event only.
Although most landowners are very co-operative,
it takes just one individual to upset a landowner and to
jeopardise the future of the event.
We encourage competitors to show all landowners,
farmers and locals their appreciation by greeting them
with courtesy during the event. Most have contributed
substantially to the event in some way. Appreciate that.
These farmers not only open their farms to us and have
their farming operations disrupted, but most importantly,
they have over the years placed this mountain bike event
on the world map for our enjoyment. Simply put, without
their support, there would be no sani2c.
Let us all continue to strengthen and maintain good
relationships with the race communities so that they will
continue to happily welcome us to their areas.
22 | sani2c 2016

12 years of making history
KAP sani2c began as the
dream of Farmer Glen,
an avid mountain bike
enthusiast and co-organiser of
the Imana Wild Ride. In 1998,
together with a few local nutty
mountain bikers, he completed
the first trial run. The following
year, he scouted and refined the
rugged path with the objective
of establishing a world-class
route. He invited friends and
experienced mountain bikers to
join in on the infamous dry runs.
Glen’s wife, Mandy has been
there from the beginning, as
back up to Glen and his scouts.
Mandy would drop them off
in the middle of somewhere
and then pick them up later in
the middle of nowhere. This
support has been a feature
of the success of sani2c. In
fact, if it was not for Mandy,
Glen would still be out there
somewhere, lost.
The entire route was scouted
and developed on mountain
bikes, providing its pioneers with
first-hand experience of every
road, path and rock, climb and
descent. Still today, countless
hours are spent debating
potential routes, usually while
perched on a mountain top
or pedalling through rows of
tall cane. Essentially, sani2c
dominates the conversation
whenever Glen and the scouts
are together; such is their
passion for this event.
In 2004, Glen was confident
that a worthy route had been
established and agreed to by
all the relevant landowners and
authorities.
2005 February 2005 saw the
inaugural sani2c, which was
highly successful, despite the
heavy rain and muddy conditions
of Day 2. Public response to
this new ‘lifestyle event’ was
overwhelming and the race
grew to massive proportions.
Reaction to its success and
an overwhelming demand for
entries for the 2006 event had
the alarmed organisers in a
24 | sani2c 2016

about sani2c
state of near panic. They were
faced with the dilemma of
disappointing more than 700
mountain bikers if they were to
remain on the original 300 team
limit for the race in 2006. After
careful deliberation, the decision
was taken to increase race
numbers to accommodate
500 teams in 2006.
2006 The 2006 event saw
Subaru coming on board as
the title sponsor. With their
assistance, the event was
elevated to the next level and was
a resounding success despite the
increased numbers and torrid
conditions experienced on Day 1.
2007 The 2007 Subaru sani2c
was restricted to just over 600
teams. For the first time since
its inception, the weather gods
smiled on the event and all
three days saw near perfect
conditions. Later that year,
Subaru sani2c was awarded the
status of Best Cycle Race of the
Year at the Annual South African
Cycling Awards evening. But
sani2c has always known that it
is only as good as its next event.
2008 Demand for entries
and pressure from communities
wanting to participate in the
event saw some radical changes
for the 2008 event. The decision
to change the format of the
event to be run as two separate
races, split into the sani2c
Adventure and sani2c Race, was
a world first. This allowed further
opportunities for community
involvement and accommodated
all teams on the 2007 waiting
list. It also warranted improving
facilities at the overnight race
villages. The two 2008 events
were a huge success.
The new format proved to be
a massive hit and the demand
for a place on the Adventure has
become most sought after. In
2008, sani2c was, once again,
awarded the status of Best Cycle
Race of the Year.
2009 When entries opened
for the 2009 event, 93% of
the previous year’s teams
re-entered. However, due to
different partners riding with
previous entrants, the event
still enjoyed a massive list of
newcomers. To handle the
increased numbers, the route
planners developed a number of
innovative new ideas – and every
year they still come up with new
and exciting innovations.
2010 Subaru sani2c 2010 saw
an even larger demand and
the size proved problematic.
As a result, the 2011 race field
was cut down to 650 teams
per event. The weather during
the 2010 event also proved a
challenge and unfortunately the
glorious Umkomaas section was
not ridden. Nevertheless, sani2c
2010 was another great event.
about sani2c
2011 This year saw some
big changes. Traditionally the
ride had always been held in
March. Although often a dry
month in southern KZN, March
can experience late summer
rains – and these had disrupted
plans every second year since
the inception of sani2c. After
months of negotiating and
juggling of dates with other
sporting events and planning
around farming operations, the
dates for sani2c were moved to
May, a drier and cooler time of
year in southern KZN, and better
suited to mountain biking. And,
bang on, 2011 saw three days of
perfect riding conditions.
2012 After the great success
of the 2011 event, the demand
for entries was at an all-time
high. This, together with
the many requests from
organisations wanting to get
involved, prompted the sani2c
team to look at adding a third
event. After much deliberation,
the Trail was added for 2012.
May of that year saw 1 400
inaugural Trail riders heading
off to the coast. What a boost it
was for our many old and new
beneficiaries whose hard work
was made that more worthwhile
because of the third event.
This was Nedbank’s first
year as title sponsor, but in
reality, the bank had been with
sani2c since 2009. Initially,
Nedbank was represented by
riders enthused by the event,
the communities it serves and
their fellow competitors. Having
experienced what was on offer
first-hand, the group came on
board under the old BoE banner.
2013 was the year of the
bridges at Nedbank sani2c
and saw the introduction of
the new 600m floating bridge.
This beach finish proved to be a
great climax to the event. Due to
low-cost housing developments
north of Umzinto, the Day 3
route had to be significantly
changed, with approximately
20km added to the overall
distance. No longer was the final
day a dash to the coast! All in
all these proved good additions
that were well received by the
riders and have now become a
recognised feature of the ride.
2014 In 2014, it was the 10th
birthday of Nedbank sani2c.
A big fuss was made over the
nearly 20 ‘Black Mambas’ who
had done all 10 events since
inception. The weather gods
and everything else shone for
the 10th anniversary event.
‘The Barn’ concept was
introduced at the race villages
and it was universally accepted
that sani2c’s 10th year was one
of the best yet.
2015 This year, the organisers
focussed on delivering a new
and improved event, having
made the groundbreaking
decision to upgrade and
build towards permanent
race villages in 2014. These
26 | sani2c 2016

about sani2c
new developments provided all
riders with a new experience as
well as simplified things for the
communities and race crew.
During the latter part of 2014,
Glencairn Farm was purchased
with the view to setting up a new
race registration venue. After 10
years, in 2015, the race finally
started from where it was originally
planned to begin – Sani Pass.
Jolivet farm, the venue for
the Stage 2 overnight stop,
was purchased in 2014 and the
demolishing and building of
permanent structures began in late
2014 and early 2015. After years of
squeezing into small marquees and
dinning in adjoining farm sheds,
Farmer Glen demolished all the old
buildings and erected a new kitchen
and dining area. The Barn concept
also gained great momentum.
sani2c is serious about creating
opportunities and jobs for people
along the route, and investments
into permanent race villages are a
priority in achieving this goal.
a more empowered 2016
A
fter the surprise announced a B-BBEE
and is ultimately why people
loss of its title partnership with sani2c in come to ride the three-day
sponsor Nedbank January 2016.
event. In appreciation of
in late 2015, sani2c decided
to change its strategy
on sponsorship. Instead
of attempting to attract
a partner through the
traditional sponsorship
routes, the sani2c event
team decided to attract
potential partners with
its well proven social
upliftment model.
The organising team
innovatively restructured
sani2c to attract a partner
through CSI and B-BBEE
opportunities – and
the result was that KAP
Industrial Holdings Limited,
a JSE listed company,
KAP’s decision to partner
with sani2c was made due
to the event’s strong social
upliftment element which
aligned well with the KAP
culture. It’s an exciting
partnership where all parties
stand to benefit, none more
so than the communities
who have worked so hard
to position the event where
it stands today.
Building at both Glencairn
Farm and Jolivet has also
continued and a permanent
building team was employed
year round.
However, sani2c will never
forget that ‘Route is King’
this, 2016 sees many route
improvements, especially
on Days 1 and 2, where
trailbuilders have eliminated
transition and tricky sections
and instead added signature
sani2c flowing trails.
Most importantly, Farmer
Glen and his team have
gone back to basics and
remembered why mountain
bikers started riding their
bikes. Was it not because of
the freedom to be yourself
with your friends without
rules, and where the
excitement of adventure was
a big attraction? KAP sani2c
2016 will recapture this.
black
mambas
In 2014 we celebrated
the 10th birthday of sani2c
– and the fact that almost
20 riders had participated
in every 10 events. The
Black Mambas club was
established to honour
these stalwarts. Every year
additional riders join the club
as they ride their 10th sani2c.
It is an achievement they
are proud of and they wear
their commemorative jackets
with pride. We appreciate
the loyal support of these
riders over the years. They
are all true mountain bikers
and we salute them all.
• The first 3.2km will be a
neutral zone where all riders
will stay behind a lead car
controlled at 20km/h.
• Thereafter the racing will
begin with 12km on open
district road. This will warm
the legs and a smallish drag
will split the batch before
you enter Acutt’s Avenue,
a fast, generally downhill
3.5km dual track that has
been redesigned and
added to with a number of
mergers, bridges and passing
opportunities.
• Breaking out of the gum
plantation you will race
along the fast district road
passing through green
valleys filled with dairy
cows. Regular riders will be
surprised by a new left turn
that leads onto the farm of
Pevency’s old and bearded
mayor, Lyn Bloemeyer and his
young son, Joe. Their herd
of Jersey cows will think you
all nuts for travelling at such
speed through their home.
After passing Lyn’s pride
and joy, his 9-tower centre
pivot, you’ll enter the scenic
farm of Charles Taylor, one
of the strongest farmers in
Underberg.
• Take time to look at the
breaking out onto another
new section of singletrack
up Death Valley, designed to
eliminate the wide open road
and the drag up to the first
spectator point.
• Thereafter, you will cross the
railway line and there will
be no respite before the first
significant climb up to the
View Climb. If the pressure is
not on, this is the final time to
steal a glance at the Southern
Drakensberg before you head
off towards the sea.
• More ‘keep left, pass right’
double singletrack will lead
down the Ferns through
cool pine forests and into
Bramble Ripper.
• There are some flowing turns
through the young pines
before you hear the noise
of spectators lined up at the
Batch starts and seeding
In an effort to reduce congestion
on the race route, we will be
seeding all teams for the start
each day. Seeding for Day 1 will
contention and eligible for
podium positions need to start
in either Batch A or B. Should
you be in the top 5 in your
category the onus is on you to
ensure that you have spoken
to the time keepers and made
arrangements to start in Batch
B. Anyone not starting in Batch
A or B on the last day will not be
eligible for a podium position.
joined forces with EasyBike who
are our GPS information and
available to answer any GPS
questions in the run-up to the
event, at registration and at the
race villages along the route.
Water Tables and
Feed Stations
The rule of thumb is that there
is one watering station per
35km (roughly). Day 1 has two
watering points. Day 2 has
three and Day 3 has two. Their
location will be discussed at the
race briefing and is indicated
on the maps displayed at each
overnight stop.
Each watering point will
serve chilled water and coke.
Each table will also have a
selection of eats available.
Each morning at breakfast, you
can make sandwiches to carry
with you if you feel you require
more nutrition for the ride. We
recommend that you carry your
own favourite brand of energy
At the end of the day
Your bike will be taken away
from you for washing by the
and remove your GPS device.
aQuellé will be on the finish
water so you can rehydrate.
Clover Vanilla and Chocolate
Milk will also be available in
the recovery area, and the USN
team will be offering shakers
and recovery drinks. They will
also offer advice to anyone who
experienced hydration, sugar
and other issues along the route.
Once hydrated and recovered,
you will be required to collect
your Black Box from the Super
Group truck. Trolleys will be
available to help you push your
box to your tent. Please do this
yourself and refrain from using
the race village staff. The race
village helpers have other tasks
to perform and the offer of tips
is not encouraged.
Delete the first numeral from
your race board and this is your
tent number. Once you have
found your tent, leave your
trolley in the passage and a
porter will return it.
Please shower before going to
lunch in the Barn. (For hygienic
and other obvious reasons, we
request that all riders shower
before visiting any dining area.)
The Barn at Mackenzie and
Jolivet is open 24 hours and
will serve lunch, tea, coffee,
chocolates, banana bread
and supper for the duration of
the event for all competitors
between the start and finish
lines. Tea and instant coffee
will be provided but all other
beverages (alcoholic and soft)
will need to be purchased from
the bars provided by the local
communities.
Supporters and race crew
need to stock up with all their
meals, drinks, etc, before
the start as these will not be
available in the race villages. We
are in the country so shops are
extremely scarce.
Cut-off policy
We will have a cut-off at the last
water point of each day and one
at the finish at 5pm. These cutoffs
are very achievable and will
be announced at race briefing
each evening.
Why a cut-off policy? We
have an incredible backup
support crew who look after
you in daylight hours. You need
to be in before dark each night
or this impacts on them and
results in us spending too much
time looking after the unfit
and underprepared versus the
majority of our riders.
sani2c is an event that is about
achieving something. It is not
a bike tour. Only riders who
finish all three stages will get the
Finisher’s T-shirt in Scottburgh.
Prizegivings
We will stage a prizegiving at
the race village each day. Stage
winners and overall category
leaders should be present at
the daily awards ceremony. The
final prize giving will be held at
Scottburgh beach at 1pm.
Day 1: Mackenzie 6pm
Day2: Jolivet 7pm
Day 3: Scottburgh 1pm
NOTE: Only the Race event gets
awarded for overall category.
The Trail and Adventure riders
will receive fun prizes.
Supporters
Overnight Plan
Due to the fact that the race
villages are at their full capacity,
we cannot accommodate
supporters in the race villages.
Supporters need to be fully
self-sufficient and stay outside
of the race villages. There is
strict control at the race villages
and only riders will be allowed
access to the rider areas.
Supporters will be restricted to
finish line areas only. Supporters
and back-up personnel using
camper vans, etc, need to
register and book their sites.
Mobile Homes,
Camper Vans and
Private Camping
All camper vans, caravans,
etc, need to book and pay for
parking. This includes parking at
Glencairn Farm, Mackenzie Club
and Jolivet. Please email Sandra
(judy@sani2c.co.za) to request
banking details and to secure
your booking. Please note that
drivers/supporters will not be
allowed into the race villages. It
is R1 000 for all 3 nights. All your
camper van crew and vehicles
will need to be registered.
An area and a site will be
allocated for your team.
Please book access for all
your support personnel and
crew. This includes masseurs,
mechanics, chefs and general
helpers. They will need to bring
their own camping equipment,
mattresses, sleeping bag, etc.
They will not be allowed to
utilise your tent in the race
village as we have found that
they often go to bed late and
disturb sleeping riders. They will
also not be allowed to remove
mattresses from vacant tents.
Please also note that no power
will be supplied. You will need to
bring your own silent generator
with you. Talisman have
branches countrywide that hire
out small silent generators.
Pre-race preparation
It should go without saying that
your bike should be in perfect
working order at the start of
sani2c – but we are saying it
anyway for the sake of absolute
clarity. It will be subjected
to severe riding conditions
and we recommend that you
replace any old parts that may
not survive the 268km. Select
tyres that are suitable for harsh
conditions. Substantial mud,
seriously steep descents,
jagged rocks and tough thorns
may be encountered. The
use of tubeless tyres is highly
recommended. Check your
slime levels and top up slime.
They do not give it a spit and
you own arrangements in this
health & safety
General
It is important that both team
members stick together at all
times. It is your responsibility to
ensure that you stay with your
team mate at all times. Should
he/she be in trouble, you
should contact the necessary
backup and leave him/her only
with the express permission of
Farmer Glen.
First Aid Kit
This should comprise a foil
survival blanket, three first-aid
dressings, five adhesive
first-aid plasters and sun block.
Sunburn
Riding sani2c can be very hot.
We recommend the use of
very high factor sun block and
that this should be re-applied
throughout the day.
Heat
Temperatures above 35°C
could be experienced in
the Umkomaas Valley. It is
important to prepare for this
and wear the appropriate
clothing and protection. The
rules state that you carry a
minimum of three litres of
fluids with you. We recommend
that you maintain this level by
refilling at all the water tables
along the route. One wrong
turn in the African bush and
you could see yourself
hallucinating with the mambas
of the Umkomaas Valley.
Cold
It can be very cold overnight
and in the early morning. Please
pack warm, protective clothing
for colder temperatures.
Snakes
The Umkomaas Valley is home
to the infamous black mamba.
Please be aware of this and
google these guys!
Bees
Bees are prolific among the
gum plantations and farmers
place beehives in the area.
If you are allergic to bee stings,
we recommend that you carry
your antihistamine with you
on the ride.
ace information
Malaria
This area is NOT a malarial zone
and mosquitoes are not prolific
at this time of the year. However,
we still recommend you bring a
mosquito repellent.
Mud
Mud could be experienced on
stages so a set of riding glasses
is advisable. Eye wash may also
be useful. Tyres suitable for mud
and thorns are strongly advised.
Water in streams
and rivers
It is strongly recommended that
you do not drink the water from
any of the rivers or streams that
you will be crossing, as clean as
they may seem. Clean drinking
water will be provided in the
race villages and at the water
tables along the route.
Pollen count
This will be nearly zero in this
area at this time.
My SOS
mySOS will once again partner
with KAP sani2c 2016. Please
down load this app – it will
greatly enhance our medical
response and services.
Medical Evacuation
Evacuation plans will be in place
to evacuate competitors from
remote areas if necessary. A
dedicated medical response
helicopter is on standby for
any emergency. The medical
plan will be given to you before
the start. This will include
instructions around using the
mySOS app.
Responsible Riding
Many of the areas through
which you will be riding are
very remote and to evacuate
you from some of these areas
will pose a logistical challenge.
We appeal to you to ride in a
responsible manner particularly
on Day 2 after the descent into
the Umkomaas Valley. The
singletrack follows the river
for over 15km and there is no
clearing for a helicopter. The
only option is stretcher bearers
who would have to hike over
15km to reach you and then up
to 5km with you on a stretcher.
respect for all
All competitors need to respect
the fact that without the support
of the various landowners and
local communities, this event
would not be possible. Please
show your appreciation for this
whenever possible.
