Mommy Sue’s Children
Mid-Year Status Report - 2016
OUR MISSION IS TO EMPOWER CHILDREN IN UNDERPRIVILEGED COMMUNITIES BY
PROVIDING THEM WITH EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES.

SUE AT THE SCHOOL IN HAITI
Mommy Sue's Children Brief
Background
Established In 2013, Mommy
Sue’s Children was born of
the need to support those
grass roots projects – local
people trying to help their
communities – that get little
support elsewhere.
Currently we are supporting
a free school in Haiti started
in 2007 by two young Haitian
men (Maxo and Avril) with
their own money who
realized that the children of
their community were not
receiving an education
because their parents could
not afford to send them. For
a few years after the 2010
earthquake it was supported
by disaster response groups,
and the school grew beyond
Maxo and Avril’s ability to
support it. Most of the
response groups are gone
and the school now looks to
Mommy Sue’s Children as its
major source of funding. We
do not run the school, but
rather provide funding and
resources. We also support
smaller efforts (under $1000)
that can use a hand up as we
run across them on our
travels.
Status of Charity
● Became a 501c3 in October 2013
● Website: Mommysueschildren.org / Mommysue.org
● 100% of donations go to Haiti - we fund travel, supplies, web site, etc. personally
● Linked-in; Facebook; Twitter; GuideStar
● Not Registered in PA (Not necessary for income
Project: Community School of Bellevue
● Objective
o Establish a permanent safe pre-k
through 12 grade school with an
environment conducive to learning
to serve those children in Gressier
who cannot afford to go to school.
o self-sustainability (via some income
producing venture & multi-year
donation commitments)
o a food program as most of these
children come to school hungry
o a safe place to play soccer and
other outdoor recreations
o library, science and trades building
o Provide for the cost of operations
until such time as self-sustainable
● Status:
o Land Purchased (2/3 acre) (2012) - This is enough land to put a 15 room school with a two room
administration building/library and latrine
o Well - Drilled and capped. Depth much greater than anticipated so we can’t use a hand pump. Using solar
or gas increases the price due to the need for security. $6K raised toward a goal of $10K. (original budget
was $6K) Using gas because the cost for security is less, but solar makes more sense to use for water
purification and electricity for the school. This can only be implemented if we find a major donor to fund
the school because the security issues are too great otherwise.
o
o
Food - Partnering with OneEgg Haiti to give each child one egg a day
Operations - The school relies on us for 100% of their support wrt paying teachers and staff as well as
school supplies and uniforms - see CSB expense report below
● Opportunities for self-sustainability -
o 90 percent of poultry and eggs consumed in Haiti are imported – chicken farm would require purchase of
additional land
o Artisan community has been shown to be successful – training needed
o Partnership with major company or religious organization needed
o Our commitment
● Building Preparation -
o The well is in but capped, and not in the position where Maxo’s original plan had it – a new plan needs to
be drawn ($1000) We don’t have this as we are dipping into the salary donations to pay for the well.
o Once the plan is drawn, a capital campaign needs to follow - see projected costs below
o We have a contractor named Tingue who is experienced and who can build the school.
▪ Tingue is the past director of facilities at Christianville – a local private school. He built may
classrooms there before 2010 that withstood the earthquake.
▪ He runs his own ministry with an American Pastor and has built a church and the guest house
where we stay.
▪ He has given us a price of $13K per 15x20 room – price includes site preparation (which is basically
flat), high quality concrete floor and block, rebar every 8”, tin roof & door. Does not include
Electricity or water.
o Solar needed for well purification and electricity
●
●
Operations
o The Community School of Bellevue is registered with the Haitian Government.
o 80% of children passed government testing - (Maxo suggests part of that is due to lack of school supplies
and the difficulty of learning when there are essentially no walls between the classrooms)
o Wooden shed structure has been moved to the new location but the problem is that by re-using the wood
the school is not stable.
Obstacles
o Difficult to communicate with Haiti – turnaround time of emails/ txts
o Maxo’s job (he has been unemployed since January)
o Language Barrier – Avril, the school administrator, speaks only Creole
o New Government mandates that schools must go to grade 9 – we need to build and raise more for more
teachers
