Welcome to this celebratory private sale catalogue, 

curated to celebrate the 350th anniversary of 

Spink. Every item here has been carefully selected 

by the heads of all the specialist departments at 

Spink to represent, in the broadest sense, the 

essence of what we do at Spink. We handle items 

that speak of and reflect history, and all our 

specialists share a love of the objects they see on a 

daily basis. 

In this special offering of 66 items spanning 350 

years, you will find everything from rare port and 

whisky to Fabergé, from a cheque written by 

Charles Dickens to rare stamps, from submarines 

to railways, from a 17th century post bag to a 

silver dhow, as well as the specially designed and 

minted 350th Anniversary Spink medals. I hope 

you enjoy the unique range of interesting and 

important items presented here as much as we 

have enjoyed selecting them. 

Spink was born in a tumultuous year in British 

history. Our founder, John Spink, as with so 

many others in the aftermath of the Great Fire of 

London in 1666, had to build his business from 

the ashes. We continue that process of building 

today as we embrace new technologies and 

globalisation with fully fledged offices in 

London, New York, Hong Kong, Singapore and 

Switzerland. But, we never lose sight of our 

passion for history, the items we offer and you, 

our valued customers. 

The thrill of the chase to find older things that 

have personality, character and a great story 

behind them is an obsession we all share. If you 

collect, then your collection becomes a reflection 

of who you are. Each handpicked object in this 

catalogue has been enormous fun to track down 

and acquire and each, in its own way, tells a 

story. Together they are a reflection of Spink. 

In all probability I shall not be here for Spink’s 

400th year celebrations, but, I together with all 

the totally committed staff in all our locations 

worldwide, work tirelessly to ensure that an even 

more vibrant, inspired and professional Spink will 

be there to celebrate 400 years in business in 

2066! After all we are all dedicated custodians of 

the most amazing franchise in the world of

1. An Exquisite Silver Gilt and Cloisonné Enamel Two Compartment Fabergé Stamp Box 

by the Famous Workmaster Fyodor Rückert, 1896-7, the hinged lid at top beautifully 

enamelled with 5 and 7 Kopek stamps amid colourful scrolling foliage, and opening to a 

gilded and sloped interior with central division, the main body of the box showing a similar 

intricate pattern with the different colours of the design separated by gilded rope effect bands; 

an extremely fine and important stamp box made in the highest quality, which makes a great 

centre piece to any Stamp Box or Fine Russian Stamp collection. A great rarity. 

*Fyodor Rückert was a silver and goldsmith who worked with Carl Fabergé from 1887 in Moscow.

2. Silver Medal Commemorating the Embarkation of Charles II at Scheveningen on his 

restoration to England, 1660, 70mm, by Pieter van Abeele, obverse shows Charles wearing 

the George of the Order of the Garter, reverse fleet under sail, good very fine, attractive and 

scarce. 

*This medal commemorates 

the event which took 

place on June 2 nd , 

1660, Charles II and 

his court embarked 

on the Naseby from 

Scheveningen, ship 

later renamed the 

Royal Charles.

3. A Remarkable Entire, Believed to be the Earliest Recorded Penny Black on Cover 

showing the full marginal inscription, of which this is perhaps the prettiest in existence. 

GA, worn impression, with full sheet and margin inscription “(In wetting the) Back be careful 

not (to remove the cement)” and deckle edge at left, with good to large margins on the other 

three sides, affixed upside down (perhaps out of disrespect for the Queen) to entire letter, 

dated 13 May 1840. Addressed to Dublin, tied by a red Maltese Cross cancellation, superb 

dated markings and a bright green seal on reverse, fine, fresh and uncreased.

4. An Exact Surveigh of the Streets, Lanes, and Churches following the Great Fire of 

London, 10 th December 1666, by Order of the Lord Mayor, John Leake, coloured in two 

parts, each 78 x 59cms, mounted on card, very clean and fine, scarce; together with token coins 

that can be placed on the map: 

a) William Adley, Bride Lane (Fleet Street), half penny, 1663, very fine. 

b) The Seven Stars, Cornhill, farthing, 1648, very fine. 

c) Will Hearne at Y Whit (the Bear), Bride Lane (Fleet Street), farthing, fine. 

d) Boars Head Tavern, Gt. Eastcheap, farthing, fine. Shakespeare, Burbage and Ben Jonson are all 

supposed to have frequented this tavern. It was totally destroyed in the Great Fire and subsequently 

rebuilt in 1668. 

e) Edward Harris, Drury Lane, half penny, 1666, about very fine. 

f) Anthony Clarke at Ye (Horseshoe Inn), Drury Lane, half penny, 1666, very fine. 

g) Rose Tavern, Fleet Street, farthing, 1649, very fine. 

h) Robert Thody, Holborn, half penny, 1667, fine. 

i) Thomas Chapman, Bloomsbury, half penny, 1664, very fine. 

j) Blake Boy, Cheapside, farthing, 1652, fine. 

k) Jonathan Redock, Sharp’s Alley (Cow Cross), farthing, 1663, about very fine. 

l) John Hall, New Exchange (Strand), farthing, very fine. 

m) Black Bell, Themes Street, farthing, 1652, fine. 

n) The Ship Without, Temple Bar, farthing, 1649, fine. The Ship Inn near Temple Bar goes back to the 

1570s and was in continuous use until reign of Queen Anne. 

o) The Kings Tavern, Chancery Lane, farthing, fine. The King’s Head Tavern, its sign as on the token a 

bust of Henry VIII was the house of John Oldcastle, Baron Cobham (Shakespeare’s Sir John 

Falstaff). The Popish Plot was launched from here. The building was pulled down in 1799. 

*This beautiful survey is reduced 

and engraved by Vertue in 1723 for 

the Society of Antiquaries. It is a 

derivative of Leake’s 1667 map of 

London after the Fire. The 

accompanying tokens can be placed 

on the streets as they are 

contemporary. Tokens issued in the 

17 th century were struck to provide 

sufficient small denomination 

coinage as Parliament continually 

failed to do so. Struck in copper or 

brass, often poorly and crudely they 

provide a wonderful social history of 

London at this time. They are 

becoming increasingly rare.

5. The Superb Russian Imperial Order of the White Eagle, bestowed upon Field Marshal the 

Lord Grenfell, King’s Royal Rifle Corps, Commander-in-Chief of the Egyptian Army, 1886- 

92; Aide-de-Camp to H.M. Queen Victoria; Governor of Malta, 1899-1903; Gold Stick to 

H.M. King Edward VII and H.M. King George V; and Commander of the Forces in Ireland, 

1904-08. Russia, Imperial, Order of the White Eagle, Civil Division, set of Insignia, by 

Keibel, St. Petersburg, sash Badge, 90mm including crown suspension x 60mm, gold (56 

zolotniki) and enamel, manufacturer’s mark, 1865-1896 assay office mark, and court stamp 

on eagle’s claws, manufacturer’s mark and court stamp on suspension loop; Star, 90mm, 

silver-gilt (84 zolotniki) and enamel, manufacturer’s name, 1865-96 assay office mark, and 

court stamp on reverse and on pin, blue enamel damage to crown tassels, otherwise extremely 

fine, with short length of sash ribbon for display purposes (2).

6. France, Unique use of French Stamps prior to the Official First Day of Issue (1 st 

January 1849), 1849-52, 20c. black, tied to entire by “AMIENS/31 DEC/1848” cachet a 

date and with arrival datestamp “OISEMONT/1 JANV/49” on reverse, fine, exceptional and 

unique R. Calves (1996), Behr (2009) and Scheller (2009) certificates.

7. Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation, Specimen $100, 1 st Jan. 1921, 

perforated, red SPECIMEN overprint, good extremely fine, attractive and extremely rare. 

*The inspiration for the bank came from Thomas Sutherland, a Scot, who was working for the Peninsula 

and Oriental Steam Navigation Company. He recognized the need for a commercial bank in Asia. The 

Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Ltd opened in Hong Kong on 3 rd March 1865 and in 

Shanghai one month later. It was the first locally owned and locally managed bank. Trade featured 

strongly in the bank’s operations; bullion, exchange, merchant banking and note issue. In 1874 the bank 

handled China’s first public loan and all the others thereafter.

8. Real Compania de San Fernando de Sevilla, Certificate for One Share, 1748, no.2520, 

420 x 305mm, a classic design printed in black on vellum, view of the Port and City of 

Seville, Neptune, sailing ship and much more, intricate paper seal, with some pieces missing at 

the upper right, quite good margins and a strong print, very fine. 

*Formed in 1747 to trade with all parts of South America, except Caracas and Havana. Company failed 

in the 1780s.

9. Kingdom of Iraq Banknote, 100 Dinars of 1942, featuring portrait of the child King Faisal 

II, very rare note in this condition. 

*King Faisal was the last monarch in Iraq, ruling from 1939 to 1958, when he was deposed and 

assassinated. He was used by Belgian comic writer, Hergé, as the model for Prince Abdullah of Khemed 

in the Adventures of Tintin.

10. Framed Portrait of Charles II, studio of Peter Lely (1618-1680). Oil on canvas; Head 

and Shoulders Portrait of Charles II dressed in Armour, painted in a feigned oval, 75cms x 

60cms, contained in a moulded ebonised frame (91cms x 79cms). 

*Lely was appointed as Charles II’s “Principal Painter in Ordinary” in 1661, with a stipend of 

£200 per year. Demand was high and his studio was increasingly prolific; Lely painted the sitter’s 

head and his pupils completed the portraits.

11. Standard Oil Trust $100 Share, no.568, 1882, 300 x 195mm, signed by John D. 

Rockefeller as President and H.M. Flagler as Secretary, clean, good very fine and scarce. 

*Standard Oil was the world’s first and largest multinational, which through its monopolistic approach at 

one point controlled 90% of all refined oil in the U.S. as well as being the largest supplier of kerosene in 

China. The Standard Oil Trust was controlled by a small group of families, giving evidence in 1910 

Rockefeller stated: 

“I think it is true that the Pratt family, the Payne-Whitney family, the Harkness-Flagler family and the 

Rockefeller family controlled the majority of the stock during all the history of the company up to the present 

time.” 

The Trust was a mechanism much copied as it responded to State Laws which aimed to restrict the size 

of companies. By secret agreement the existing 37 shareholders conveyed their shares “in trust” to nine 

trustees; John and William Rockefeller, Olivier Payne, Charles Pratt, Henry Flagler, John Archbold, 

William Warden, Jabez Bostwick and Benjamin Brewster. In 1911 the Trust was broken up under the 

Sherman Antitrust Act and split into 34 companies; two are still very much with us today, Standard Oil 

of New Jersey (Exxon) and Standard Oil of New York (Mobil).

12. A Stunning Block, Plate 10, PA-TF, Magnificent Block of Thirty (6x5) from the 

lower-left corner of the sheet with Plate number “10” and inscription “Price 1d. Per. Label. 

1/- Per Row of 12. £1.~.~ Per Sheet. Place the Labels ABOVE the Addrefs and tow”, TA reentry, 

PA double letter A, RA-RF all “P” converted to “R”, good margins other sides, 

unused without gum, some creasing, notably between the “Q” and “R” rows, fabulous 

colour. A stunning block.

13. Great Fire of London Commemorative Medal, in 22ct gold (425gms), no.55 of 100 

struck, 1966, 75mm, reverse portrays the Great Seal of Charles II with London and old 

St. Paul’s before the Fire, the obverse symbolizes the re-birth of the city, uncirculated, sold 

with framed illustration of the Great Fire (2) 

*Starting in a bakery in Pudding Lane the fire swept through the old medieval city inside the ancient 

Roman walls and fanned by high winds raged from Sunday 2 nd September to Wednesday 5 th September 

1666. It destroyed some 13,000 houses, 87 churches and St. Paul’s Cathedral.

14. Georgian Silver Broker’s Badge for London Stock Exchange, c. 1801-1830, 40mm, 

issued to John Norbury, extremely fine and scarce. 

*John Norbury was Deputy Chairman of the Committee of the Stock Exchange. He was one of the 

promoters of introducing a new Decimal Coinage in 1857.

15. Richard III Groat, mint mark Sun and Rose, dating this coin to the very end of Richard’s 

reign, being struck after 1484, 27mm, being the legend CIVITAS LONDON on the reverse 

of the coin, this example was struck in London, good very fine. 

*Richard III was king for only two years and was the last king of the House of York and the Plantagenet 

dynasty. His defeat at the Battle of Bosworth Field marked the end of the Middle Ages in England. 

He was the last king of England to die on the battlefield. This coin was found at Bosworth Field 

Battlefield, 22 nd August 1485, and would have belonged to a soldier fighting against Henry Tudor, who 

won the day to found the Tudor Dynasty. This coin shows very little wear and would indicate the coin 

was struck perhaps to pay the troops heading into battle. Richard’s remains were found under a car park 

in 2013. 

16. William Place Half Penny Token for an Early Postman, c. 1661, 18mm, Grays Inn 

Gate, about very fine and an important historical piece. 

*17 th century tokens were issued by traders due to the failure of the Parliament to provide sufficient 

small denomination coinage. William Place offered a variety of services from lozenges, stationery and 

delivering letters. An advertisement placed in the Mercurius Publicus, no.24, June 15-22, 1663: 

Advertisement from His MAJESTY’S General Post-office in London 

“These are to give notice to all persons concerned, that the persons hereunder named are appointed to receive 

all Letters that shall be brought unto them, to be sent (by post) into any part of His Majesties Dominions of 

England, Scotland, and Ireland … the said persons so appointed receiving Salaries for such service … that is 

to say … Mr. William Place, Stationer at Greys-Inne-gate.”

17. Societé du Commerce d’Asie & d’Afrique Share Certificate, 1000 florins, [1781], 

no.1642, 215 x 345mm, hand-signed by Guillaume Bolts and Charles de Proli, black 

printing with manuscript insertions, receipts for four payments of 250 florins below, good 

very fine. 

*This company was founded by Empress Maria Theresia as the last Austrian venture into the East Indies 

trade. It was formed to take advantage of the Revolutionary Wars raging between France, Britain and the 

Netherlands, and to monopolize their fallen trade. William Bolts, an adventurer and trader, initiated the 

setting up of the company with Charles Proli, a banker. Initially business which focused on the tea trade 

with China was brisk, but on the signing of an Armistice in 1783 this trade reverted back to the English. 

Shortly after this the company went bankrupt; Proli’s bank collapsed and he committed suicide. Bolts 

went on to trade successfully on his own account.

19. An Important and Rare Great Fire of London Document, 235 x 195mm, 1666 Letter 

of receipt recognizing the contribution made by John Moore Esq., Alderman of the Ward of 

Farringdon Extra, to the Chamberlain of London to be used as a relief for the “poore that 

suffered by the late dreadful fire”, with a list of the various parishes and the money allotted 

to each, signed by Thomas Tunman and Aleyn Reade, good clean condition and scarce. 

*John Moore, later Sir John Moore, Mayor of London, was a leading figure in the rebuilding of London 

following the fire and supplied most of the lead for the roof of St. Paul’s when it was rebuilt.

20. Beautiful Hemisphere Bronze Medal with Map of the World, between 1798 and 1817, 

74mm, views of Western and Eastern Hemispheres, contained in original case of issue, 

extremely fine and excessively rare in bronze. 

*The map of the Eastern

21 An Attractive Novelty Continental Stamp Box, c 1900, foreign hall mark, styled as an 

eighteenth century carriage, having a hinged roof and blue glass at the windows, good 

condition. 

22. A Beautiful and Rare Hallmarked Silver Inkstand, 1902, Modelled on the Desk of 

Louis XIV, it opens to reveal two inkwells and compartments for stamps, unusual and rare 

*In 1663 Louis XIV appointed a supervisor for the Royal Furniture saying: 

“There is nothing that indicates more clearly the magnificence of great princes than their superb 

palaces and their precious furniture” 

He commissioned a dazzling series of objects from cabinets to chandeliers to cabinets to mirror 

frames.

24. Thomas A. Edison Inc. Share Certificate, 1911, 310 x 240mm, signed on reverse by 

Thomas Edison, one tear at fold, otherwise good very fine and scarce. 

*Perhaps the world’s greatest inventor, however described he changed the way we live forever. His first 

great invention was the phonograph; his most famous adapting the light bulb to be cheap and usable. 

His creation of a whole utility system to power appliances was arguably his most valuable contribution to 

modern life. From motion pictures to his cement (used to build Yankee Stadium) his life was full of 

useful patents.

25. Early Railway Shareholders Silver Pass, engraved by Wyon, 1840, 50mm, Newcastle 

Upon Tyne and Carlisle Railway, issued to the Company Secretary John Adamson, extremely 

fine, boxed, very rare. 

*Adamson was typical of his class; an author, amateur antiquarian, coin collector, shell and fossil 

collector. The Newcastle Upon Tyne and Carlisle Railway was one of the earliest in the UK, being 

formed in 1825 to link Newcastle and Carlisle for transporting minerals. The first passengers were carried 

in 1835. 

26. Duke of Bedford’s Estate, Silver and Copper Passes (2), c. 1790s, 30mm, numbered and 

issued for entrance to the Duke of Bedford’s Estate, both used but otherwise very fine and 

unusual. 

*The Bloomsbury Estate, in which Spink has its premises, came into the Russell family in 1669. 

The passes, silver for friends, copper for tenants, allowed visitors to use the private road on the Duke of 

Bedford’s Estate.

29. Arrival of The Chinese Junk 

Keying in London, 1848, 45mm, 

white metal commemorative 

medal, uncirculated. 

*The Keying was the first Chinese Junk to visit 

England. She had been secretly purchased in 

Hong Kong, breaking Chinese law, was 

manned by both British and Chinese crew and 

sailed from there to the U.S. and Britain 

between 1846 and 1848. Her arrival in 

London caused quite a stir and visitors 

including Queen Victoria flocked to see her. 

“ … the greatest novelty in Europe”, was how 

the Illustrated London News described her on 

July 29 th 1848.

30. Rare 1935 Silver Jubilee, 2½d. Prussian Blue, neatly tied to small piece by way of wavy 

line cancel and showing part c.d.s. alongside dated Aug 1935; light bend at lower right 

mentioned only for accuracy and in no way detracting from the fine appearance of this very 

rare and popular error of colour.

31. Charles Dickens Cheque, 1865, 190 x 85mm, drawn on Coutts in the Strand for £25, written in 

his favourite ink and signed, good clean condition, signature clear. 

*Dickens, like many writers, had a favourite coloured ink, a shade of blue that was chosen because it 

dried quicker than other colours, so he didn’t have to keep blotting.

*The River Nene joins the Grand 

Union Canal to the River Great 

Ouse, is 88 miles long with 38 

locks and now used for recreation. 

From medieval times work had 

been progressed intermittently and 

this certificate relates to an Act 

passed in 1756 to make the river 

navigable for trade. John Smith Jnr 

was engaged to construct 20 

pound locks and 20 horse haling 

bridges in 1758 at a cost of 

£14,070; over the next three years 

the navigation was opened in 

sections. In August 1761 it was 

completed giving Northampton 

access to the sea. Thereafter the 

upkeep was to be paid for as this 

certificate testifies by tolls.

33. Early Printed British Passports (2), 

issued for Mr. St. Leger Glyn and the 

Honorable Mrs. Florence Glyn, 1864 

and 1871 respectively, 370 x 275mm, 

first bound in leather folder with 

various stamps, the second single sheet. 

*The British Passport made its first written 

appearance as a “safe conduct” document during 

the reign of Henry V. Henry VIII’s Privy Council 

issued a number of passports. Since 1794 all 

passports have been signed by the Secretary of State 

and records of each one issued exist from that date. 

Photographs were added in 1914 and the familiar 

blue document introduced in 1921. This replaced 

by the ubiquitous standard design in 2003.

34. Possibly Unique c. 1660 English Messenger’s Post Bag, 170mm x 95mm x 135mm, in 

leather with superb hinges that are typical of the type used on furniture of the period. 

The remains of a wax seal appear on the top, further suggesting that this was used as a 

leather carrier’s bag. Decorated with a scalloped edge, side hinges/handles and brass 

supports to re-inforce the sewn joints. Included is a period letter, dated 1660, sent from 

Great Yarmouth to a merchant in Norwich, which would have been carried in a pouch of 

this type, generally in good condition. 

*It is unlikely that a bag of this type would have been used as a money bag or as a place of safe keeping 

for other valuables. The size would have been ideal for letters of the period that were suitably folded. 

The bag would probably have been attached to a belt and the post delivered privately. This is a rare 

survivor!

35. Algeria Postal History, 1860, “Adieu” (declaration of love) written by Abd El Kader, 

Islamic Scholar, 180 x 130mm, clean, extremely fine, important and rare. 

*Abd El Kader was a celebrated Islamic Scholar and revolutionary leader. Born into religious aristocracy 

in Algiers, he was a Sharif by decent. In 1830 the French invaded Algeria and he rose to unite and lead 

tribal opposition as Emir or Commander of the Faithful. His attacks on the French and general success 

using guerilla tactics forced a peace treaty in 1837 and left him and his followers with the province of 

Oran. This he used as a base to extend his influence and provinces, effectively creating a new State. 

Further clashes with the French were inevitable and after protracted fighting he surrendered in 1847 

whereupon he was held in the Chateau of Amboise as a prisoner in appalling conditions. Such was his 

fame and the influence of many high ranking figures that Louis Napoleon Bonaparte on his taking power 

granted him a pardon, on the proviso that he didn’t interfere in Algeria, and a generous pension of 

100,000 francs per annum. He retired to Damascus to devote his life to theology and philosophy (as 

well as writing various poems and a book on the Arabian Horse). In riots in Damascus against the 

Christian minority he used his influence and offered protection to many Christians – saving many (some 

3,000 were killed). For this he received many decorations and plaudits from across Europe. Richard 

Burton, the famous explorer, who met him described him thus: 

“He dresses purely in white … enveloped in the usual snowy burnous … if you see him on horseback without 

knowing him to be Abd el Kadir, you would single him out … he has the seat of a gentleman and a soldier. 

His mind is as beautiful as his face; he is every inch a Sultan”

36. United Kingdom Treasury £1 Note, with Dardanelles Campaign overprint, issued in 1915 

only, of great historical interest and very rare in this excellent condition. 

*British Treasury banknotes were overprinted for use by British troops in the Dardanelles. They were 

sent to Alexandria but never distributed as the Gallipoli Campaign as it came to be known was such a 

disaster. The overprint translates as “Piastres Silver 120”.

lines and stipple techniques, 195 x 165mm. The design is signed by the author, and is 

featured on the new Bank of England £5 banknote coming out in late 2016. This banknote 

will be the first Bank of England note printed on polymer plastic.

39. Heart-shaped Silver Commemoration Locket for Charles II and Catherine of 

Braganza, 1662, 23 x 21mm, toned, very fine an attractive piece. 

*Married by proxy in 1662 Catherine of Braganza brought tea drinking to England from her native 

Portugal. She was a loyal and devoted wife in spite of enduring a long procession of often public 

mistresses of Charles. Under the wedding contract England gained Tangiers (which was to occupy 

Samuel Pepys) as well as luxuries and a huge chest of tea, which helped to pay off £300,000 of Charles’ 

debts.

40. Regents Canal Share Transfer Certificate, 1823, 335 x 245mm, made out to John Nash 

and signed by him as Director, on thick paper, few tears at folds otherwise fine and 

interesting. 

*Built to join the Grand Junction Canal to the River Thames at Limehouse, the canal was completed in 

1820. John Nash the famous architect persuaded his friend the Prince Regent (later George IV) to lend 

his name to the canal as he did for various other projects. John Nash was responsible for the look and 

layout of much of Regency London, designing many buildings that still survive today; from the 

magnificent Regents Street to the quirky Brighton Pavilion. As personal architect to the Prince and King 

he remodelled Buckingham Palace, Marble Arch and Regents Park. You can see two of his buildings 

near Spink at 15-17 Bloomsbury Square and 66-71 Great Russell Street.

crease. There is a constant large dot below the upright of L, possibly a trace of a double letter.

43. Touched by King Charles II, a gold “Touch Piece” medalet, c. 1664, 20mm, holed for 

wearing, interesting and scarce. 

*Touch pieces were gold coins used to cure disease or bring good luck. Through touch they became 

amulets. British monarchs from Edward the Confessor to Queen Anne held ceremonies during which 

through their “God given” powers of touch they healed the sick. Charles II minted special medalets for 

the ceremonies, which he took seriously. He didn’t, however, touch the diseased, but touched the 

medalets and then gave them to the sick. So he did touch this medalet. 

“To Whitehall to the Banquet House and there saw the King heale … which he did with great gravity; and it 

seemed an ugly office and a simple one” Samuel Pepys Diary, 13 th April 1661.

*The medals struck in gold and silver commemorate the 350 th anniversary of Spink. They were designed 

by the Lucky Zhao Studio; the concept idea created by Rocky Zhao. Rocky Zhao is the celebrated 

Chinese coin and medal artist who designed the 2014-16 Chinese Panda coins. His father Lucky Zhao is 

the engraver of the iconic 10 RMB banknote. The medals were struck by BH Mayer Mint in Berlin.

46. Harold II Penny of 1066, Pax type, Wilton mint, 20mm, a superb example showing a 

stunning portrait of the crowned head of Harold facing left holding a scepter, struck by the 

moneyer Aelfwold, extremely fine and rare. 

*Harold, King of England 6 th January to 14 th October 1066. Harold was the last Saxon king of 

England, the son of Earl Godwine of Wessex, who dominated the royal court and was brother-in-law to 

Edward the Confessor. Edward died on the 5 th January 1066, Harold was crowned quickly the following 

day. Harold successfully defeated a Viking invasion (mounted by Harald Hardrada of Norway) in the 

north of England, then had to march his exhausted army south to meet the Norman invasion, 

culminating in the Battle of Hastings, during which he was killed. There are only around 600 surviving 

coins of Harold II, many in museums and institutions, making these one of the most desirable of English 

coins. Only the penny denomination was struck during his brief ten month reign. 

47. Half Penny Token for Daniel Birtwissell 1666, 18mm, Bride Lane (Fleet Street) London 

at the sign of the Bear, good very fine and scarce. 

*As early as 1252 a white bear was sent as a present from Norway to King Henry III; by him it was sent 

to the Tower, and fourpence per day for its keep was directed to be paid by the sheriffs of London. 

A white bear was the badge of Queen Anne, consort of Richard III.

48. Southern Life Insurance and Trust Company of Florida Bond for $1,000, 1839, no. 

289 of 400 issued, 480x425mm, guaranteed by the Government of Florida, coupons 

integral, good very fine. 

*This insurance and trust company was the last bank to be chartered whilst Florida was a Territory. The 

bank had extensive land and cultivation loans as well as trading in cotton.

*Found in the River Thames with some small token coinage inside this purse is identical to one found 

previously which was dated 1670 on the underside.

Whisky 1966, aged 40 years. 

Cask number 4630, distilled in May 1966, 

and left to mature in oak cask, the Island 

Scotch was bottled in cask strength, nonfiltered 

and in its natural colour, May 2006 

by Duncan Taylor & Co Ltd. Only 156 

bottles were released, each individually 

numbered. 

Good label. Original carton case.

*Legend has it that Magnus Eunson, serving 

in the Church on the Orkney Island of 

Scotland, would perform his beadle duty 

during the day, while at night, he would 

smuggle and make illicit whisky. 

After an unfruitful search of the church 

looking for contraband, Excisemen came to 

Eunson’s house, where he had gathered a 

group of mourners around a coffin covered in 

a thin white sheet of fabric; beneath which 

was the illicit whisky. 

Magnus Eunson is credited as the founder of 

the Highland Park Distillery. Ironically, it was 

John Robertson, the officer who was 

responsible for Eunson’s eventual arrest and 

his fellow Exciseman, Robert Pringle, who 

purchased the High Park estate, where the 

Highland Park Distillery now stands, in April 

1813. 

Today, Highland Park is one of the very few 

left to insist on malting its own barley.

52 Cruft’s Dog Show Prize Medal, won for “Team” event, c. 1900, 40mm, encased in mount, 

unusual and scarce. 

*Cruft’s celebrates its 125 th Anniversary in 2016, the first show was held in 1891 at the Royal 

Agricultural Hall, Islington, 2,437 entries and 36 breeds took part.

53. China, Republic era, a Boat Shaped Silver Sychee for 10 Taels, issued by ‘craftsman 

Zhang Jin Rong’ and overstamped ‘Xinyang’ in Henan Province, even wear and toning. 

*Sychee were used as currency from the Qin Dynasty (3 rd century B.C.) until the fall of the Qing in the 

20 th century. They were made by individual silversmiths for local exchange. Value was determined by 

“shroffs” or money handlers based around purity of the silver and weight; subsequently broken down 

into taels, very fine and scarce.

54. Acts of Parliament for 1666, a highly interesting and important collection of the Acts of 

Parliament passed in the year 1666 The volume contains the complete through-paged set of 

acts with a collective table, which includes acts concerning the Anglo-Dutch war, 

1664-1667; An Act for Encouraging Coynage [sic.] acts relating to the ‘late fire which 

happened in London’ and ‘An Act for Rebuilding the City of London’. Together with Sir 

Edward Turnor’s speech responding to the King’s speech also concerning the Great Fire of 

London of 1666. Bound in a contemporary full-calf binding, blind ruled and titled in ink on 

the front board ‘18 Jan: 66’. 

With a contemporary ownership inscription on the front endpaper which reads ‘Ex Dono 

Rob[er]t Holt Bart. July 7 1667’.

55. Silver Medal Commemorating the First Major U-Boat Action in the World, attractive 

medal with Captain Otto Weddigen and sinking British ship portrayed, 1914, 35mm, 

attractive and scarce, sold with supporting books and contemporary illustration of the action. 

*Captain Weddigen set off on the first ever submarine patrol leaving Heligoland in August 1914 with 

the express purpose of sinking British warships. On 22 nd September U-9, his boat, found and sank three 

British armoured cruisers in less than an hour with minimal torpedoes. HMS Aboukir, Hogue and Cressy 

were sunk in quick succession with the loss of 1,459 British sailors. The action remains one of the most 

notable submarine victories of all time.

57. A Rare John Spink Farthing Token, 1657, In Nicholas Lane (St. Nicholas Lane), fine. 

*The surname Spink (Spinks or Spinkes) was first recorded in the twelfth century and became quite 

commonplace by the later Middle Ages, when it is found especially in Yorkshire and East Anglia. The 

first records of a Spink being involved with the business that would characterize the firm of Spink & Son 

occurs in the second half of the 17th century. An entry in the apprenticeship registers of the Worshipful 

Company of Goldsmiths shows that in 1658 John Spink was apprenticed to a London goldsmith named 

Alexander Venner. Why he came down from Yorkshire and how he became an apprentice is not known. 

We would assume that John Spink completed his apprenticeship 1665/6 as they were normally for a 

period of seven years. If this were to be the case then the origins of the firm Spink & Son are indeed in 

1666. We do know from the records that a John Spink lived in St. Bride’s Precinct, Fleet Street, in a 

house with three hearths. 

The business of the goldsmiths who were rising in importance at this time was evolving into one of 

money changers, lending money at interest (banking) and lending money against pledges of precious 

objects. Several other members of the Spink family were involved in both activities during the latter half 

of the 17th century.

58. China, Ming Dynasty, Da Ming Bao Chao Banknote, 1 kuan, 1368-1399, black text on 

grey mulberry bark, red seal, attractive and rare in this condition. 

*Paper currency was introduced into China as early as 1,000AD, however, it was the Ming Dynasty 

(1385-1644) who were the first to try and replace coins with paper money. But through the 

introduction of too many notes by 1425 paper currency was suspended, being only worth one 

seventeenth of its original value. A message on the note reads, “to counterfeit is death”.

59. Morris and Clayton £100 Cheque, drawn by Sir John Lewis, London, June 26 th 1663, 

190 x 155mm, marked Clayton MSS on reverse, good very fine and rare. 

*Morris & Clayton were scriveners, merchant bankers and estate agents. They were one of the original 

banks in the United Kingdom. Their unique contribution to banking history was to integrate the 

mortgage as a form of long-term security for loans. Sir Robert Clayton (1629-1707) was a banker (also 

one of first Directors of the Bank of England) and politician, who amassed a huge fortune through 

money lending in partnership with John Morris (1625-83). They lent money to landowners who were 

driven by the Civil War and Cromwellian period to seek credit in London. They dominated the market. 

Sir John Lewis was a senior London merchant, ironmonger, ship owner, knight and baronet who made 

his fortune in the East Indies and Persia (where he lived for ten years as a factor) with the East India 

Company. Pepys comments in his diary: 

“… down to the Lewes, Captain Dekins, his ship, a merchantman, where we met the owners Sir John Lewis 

and Alderman Lewes …”

Connoisseurs Choice is one of the most easily identified range 

released by Gordon & MacPhail, an independent bottler 

founded in 1895 in Elgin. 

This range was first launched in the 1960s, a period where 

most malts were used in blended whiskies, this was quite an 

unusual move to release a particular vintage, but the range has 

proven to be a success for almost four decades. 

This bottle contains some rare sherried old sweet dram from 

the Millburn distillery in Inverness.

Morris at the flying horse in Cornhill these London”, fine red seal, neatly restored hole lower 

right, otherwise fine and clean, important and scarce. 

*Letter from Burman to Morris. The Flying Horse was the premises of Morris and Sir Robert Clayton, 

the first true bankers in the UK (see lot 59 for more details on this important partnership).

63. Imperial British East Africa Company Ordinary Founders Share Certificate, 1890, 

320 x 270mm, vignette of company seal at left, very fine and scarce. 

*Set up by Royal Charter in 1888 to administrate the British East African territories following the 

“Scramble for Africa” Conference represented by the Berlin Treaty of 1885. The Company was based at 

Mombasa and administered the coastal strip and Uganda. Generally it was ineffective in administering 

the territories assigned and was absorbed into the Foreign Office in 1895. It did, however, survey the 

railway from Mombasa to Lake Victoria as well as the road. An interesting document from the British 

Empire.

Several Branches of Cookery, c.1720, Patrick Lamb, with pull out illustrations of the most 

famous late 17 th century Feasts, bound in leather, good condition and rare. 

*Patrick Lamb began his career working in the royal household as a child. In 1677 he advanced to 

become Master Cook to the Queen Consort and six years later he became a Royal Cook to the King. 

His particular skills were in the production of lavish feasts to celebrate royal events.

with the description in the catalogue. Accordingly, no Lot shall be capable of being a Forgery by reason of any damage and/or 

restoration work of any kind (including re-enamelling); 

Hammer Price 

means the amount of the accepted offer by Spink in relation to a Lot; 

Lot 

means any item deposited with us for sale by private treaty or at auction and, in particular, the item or items described against any 

Lot number in any catalogue; 

Reserve 

the amount below which we agree with the Seller that the Lot cannot be sold; 

Seller 

means the owner of the Lot being sold by us; 

Spink Group 

Spink and Son Limited, our subsidiaries and associated companies. 

VAT 

value added tax chargeable under VAT and any similar replacement or additional tax; and 

VAT Symbols means the symbols detailing the VAT status of the Lot details of which are set out in par. 5. 

2 SPINK’S ROLE AS AGENT 

2.1 All sales undertaken by us either at auction or privately are 

undertaken either as agent on behalf of the Seller or from time to 

time, as principal if we are the owner of the Lot. Please note that even 

if we are acting as agent on behalf of the Seller rather than as 

principal, we may have a financial interest in the Lot. 

2.2 The contract for the sale of the Lot will be between you and the 

Seller. 

3 BEFORE THE SALE 

3.1 Examination of goods 

You are strongly advised to examine personally any goods in which 

you are interested, before the auction takes place. Condition reports 

are usually available on request. We provide no guarantee to you 

other than in relation to Forgeries, as set out in clause 5.12 of these 

Terms and Conditions. 

3.2 Catalogue descriptions 

3.2.1 Statements by us in the catalogue or condition report, or made 

orally or in writing elsewhere, regarding the authorship, origin, 

date, age, size, medium, attribution, genuineness, provenance, 

condition or estimated selling price of any Lot are merely 

statements of opinion, and are not to be relied on as statements 

of definitive fact. Catalogue and web illustrations are for guidance 

only, and should not be relied on either to determine the tone or 

colour of any item. No lot shall be rejected on the grounds of 

inaccurate reproduction. No lot illustrated in the catalogue and 

online shall be rejected on the grounds of cancellation, centring, 

margins, perforation or other characteristics apparent from the 

illustration. Estimates of the selling price should not be relied on 

as a statement that this price is either the price at which the Lot 

will sell or its value for any other purpose. 

3.2.2 Many items are of an age or nature which precludes their being 

in perfect condition and some descriptions in the catalogue or 

given by way of condition report make reference to damage 

and/or restoration. We provide this information for guidance 

only and the absence of such a reference does not imply that an 

item is free from defects or restoration nor does a reference to 

particular defects imply the absence of any others. 

3.2.3 Other than as set out in clause 5.12, and in the absence of 

fraud, neither the Seller nor we, nor any of our employees or 

agents, are responsible for the correctness of any statement as to 

the authorship, origin, date, age, attribution, genuineness or 

provenance of any Lot nor for any other errors of description or 

for any faults or defects in any Lot. Every person interested 

should exercise and rely on his own judgment as to such matters. 

3.3 Your Responsibility 

You are responsible for satisfying yourself as to the condition of the 

goods and the matters referred to in the catalogue description. 

3.4 Extensions – Stamps only 

3.4.1 If you wish to obtain an expert opinion or Certificate of 

Authenticity on any Lot (other than a mixed Lot or Lot 

containing undescribed stamps) you must notify us in writing at 

the time of placing your offer. 

If accepted by us, such request shall have the same effect as notice 

of an intention to question the genuineness or description of the 

Lot for the purposes of clause 5.12 (Refund in the case of 

Forgery) of these Terms and Conditions and the provisions of 

clause 5.12 (Refund in the case of Forgery) shall apply 

accordingly. 

3.4.2 Notice of a request for an expert opinion or Certificate of 

Authenticity must give the reason why such opinion is required 

and specify the identity of your proposed expert which will be 

subject to agreement by us. We reserve the right, at our 

discretion, to refuse a request for an expert opinion or Certificate 

of Authenticity including (without limitation) where the 

proposed expert is not known to us. 

3.4.3 If we accept a request for an expert opinion or Certificate of 

Authenticity we will submit the Lot to the Expert Committee. 

You acknowledge and accept that the length of time taken by an 

Expert Committee to reach an opinion will vary depending on 

the circumstances and in any event is beyond our control. 

3.4.4 We will not accept a request for an extension on account of 

condition. Any Lot described in the catalogue as having faults or 

defects may not be returned even if an expert opinion or 

Certificate of Authenticity cites other faults or defects not 

included in the catalogue description, other than in the case of a 

Forgery. 

3.4.5 It should be noted that any stamp accompanied by a 

Certificate of Authenticity is sold on the basis of that Certificate 

only and not on the basis of any other description or warranty as 

to authenticity. No request for an extension will be accepted on 

such a stamp and the return of such a stamp will not be accepted. 

3.4.6 If you receive any correspondence from the Expert Committee 

in relation to the Lot, including but not limited to a Certificate 

of Authenticity, you must provide us with copies of such 

correspondence no later than 7 days after you receive such 

correspondence.

4 AT THE SALE 

4.1 Refusal of participation 

We have the right, exercisable at our complete discretion, to refuse 

participation at the private treaty sale. 

4.2 Registration before placing offers 

You must complete and sign a registration form and provide 

identification before making an offer. Please be aware that we usually 

require buyers to undergo a credit check. 

4.3 Placing offers as Principal 

When making an offer (whether such offers are made in person or 

by way of written offer or email offer), you will be deemed to be 

acting as principal and will be accepting personal liability, unless it has 

been agreed in writing, at the time of registration, that you are acting 

as agent on behalf of a third party buyer acceptable to us. 

4.4 Offers 

If you give us instructions to process your offer on your behalf, by 

using the form provided, we shall use reasonable endeavours to do so. 

If we receive offers on a particular Lot for identical amounts and these 

offers are the highest offers for the Lot and equal or higher than the 

acceptable price or the reserve, it will be sold to the person whose 

offer was received first. Processing offers is undertaken subject to 

other commitments and we may be unable to process them as 

requested. Since this is undertaken as a free service to prospective 

buyers on the terms stated, we cannot accept liability for failure to 

process an offer. 

4.5 Offers by Spink 

4.5.1 We reserve the right to place offers on Lots on the Seller’s 

behalf up to the amount of the Reserve (if any), which will never 

be above the published price printed on the price list. 

4.5.2 The Spink Group reserves the right to place offers on and 

purchase Lots as principal. 

4.6 Spink’s Discretion 

We have the right at our absolute discretion to refuse any if we decide 

to withdraw or divide any Lot, to combine any two or more Lots and, 

in the case of error or dispute, to put an item up for sale again. 

4.7 Successful Offer 

Subject to our discretion, the offer that equals or is higher than the 

price published on the price list, provided always that such offer is 

higher than the Reserve (where applicable), will be the hammer price 

and will mark the conclusion of a contract for sale between you and 

the Seller. 

4.8 Return of Lot 

4.8.1 Once your offer has been accepted for a Lot then you are liable 

to pay for that Lot in accordance with these Terms and 

Conditions. If there are any problems with a Lot then you must 

notify us within 7 days of receipt of the Lot, specifying the nature 

of the problem. We may then request that the Lot is returned to 

us for inspection. Save as set out in clause 5.12, the cancellation 

of the sale of any Lot and the refund of the corresponding 

purchase price is entirely at our sole discretion. We will not 

normally exercise that discretion if the Lot is not received by us 

in the same condition that it was in at the time of purchase. 

4.8.2 No lot may be returned on account of condition if the 

condition was stated by a third party grading company 

(including, but not limited to PCGS, NGC, ANACS, ICG, 

PMG, WBG). 

5 AFTER THE SALE IS AGREED 

5.1 Hammer price, charges and Value Added Tax 

In addition to the Hammer Price, you must pay us a fee for paying 

by card and postal charge if Lot is shipped to you. For Lot marked as 

a Daggered (†) lot there is 20% VAT payable on the hammer price. 

5.2 VAT Refunds 

General 

5.2.1 As we remain liable to account for VAT on all Lots unless they 

have been exported outside the EU within 3 months of the date 

of sale, you will generally be asked to deposit all amounts of VAT 

invoiced. However, if a Spink nominated shipper is instructed, 

then any refundable VAT will not be collected. In all other cases 

credits will be made when proof of export is provided. If you 

export the Lot yourself you must obtain shipping documents 

from the Shipping Department for which a charge of £50 will be 

made. 

5.2.2 If you export the Lot you must return the valid proof of export 

certificate to us within 3 months of the date of sale. If you fail to 

return the proof of export certificate to us within such period and 

you have not already accounted to us for the VAT, you will be 

liable to us for the full amount of the VAT due on such Lot and 

we shall be entitled to invoice you for this sum. 

5.2.3 To apply for a refund of any VAT paid, the proof of export 

certificate must be sent to our Shipping Department clearly 

marked ‘VAT Refund’ within 3 months of the date of sale. No 

payment will be made where the total amount of VAT refundable 

is less than £50 and Spink will charge £50 for each refund 

processed. 

VAT Refunds - Buyers from outside the EU 

5.2.4 Where the Lot is marked as a Daggered (†) Lot the VAT 

charged on the Hammer Price may be refunded where evidence 

of export from the EU is produced within 3 months of the date 

of sale. 

5.3 Payment 

5.3.1 You must provide us with your full name and permanent 

address and, if so requested, details of the bank from which any 

payments to us will be made. You must pay the full amount due 

(comprising the Hammer Price, card fee, postal charge and any 

applicable VAT) within seven days after the date of the sale. This 

applies even if you wish to export the Lot and an export licence 

is (or may be) required. 

5.3.2 You will not acquire title to the Lot until all amounts due have 

been paid in full. This includes instances where special 

arrangements were made for release of Lot prior to full 

settlement. 

5.3.3 Payment should be made in sterling by one of the following 

methods: 

II(i) Direct bank transfer to our account details of which are set 

out on the invoice. All bank charges shall be met by you. 

Please ensure that your client number is noted on the 

transfer. 

i(ii) By cheque or bank draft made payable to Spink and Son 

Ltd and sent to Spink at 69 Southampton Row, 

Bloomsbury, London WC1B 4ET. Please note that the 

processing charges for payments made by cheques or bank 

drafts drawn on a non-U.K bank shall be met by you. 

Please ensure that the remittance slip printed at the bottom 

of the invoice is enclosed with your payment. 

(iii) By Visa, Mastercard or American Express. Payments made 

by American Express are subject to a 4% fee. All other 

credit cards and debit cards issued by overseas banks are 

subject to a fee of 2%. For all card payments there are limits 

to the amounts we will accept depending on the type of 

card being used and whether or not the cardholder is 

present. 

5.3.4 Payments should be made by the registered buyer and not by 

third parties, unless it has been agreed at the time of registration 

that you are acting as an agent on behalf of a third party. 

5.4 Invoices 

Invoices may consist of one or more pages and will show: Zero rated 

Lots (o); no symbol Lots sold under the Dealers’ Margin Scheme; 

Lots marked (g) special scheme Investment Gold; Daggered Lots (†), 

imported Lots marked (x) and (Ω), (e) Lots with Zero rated hammer 

for EU VAT registered buyers. 

5.5 Collection of Purchases 

5.5.1 We shall retain lots purchased until 20 September 2016 and 

until all amounts due to us, or to the Spink Group, have been 

paid in full. Lots will not be released until cleared funds are 

received with regard to payments made by cheque. 

5.5.2 Unless we notify you to the contrary, items retained by us will 

be covered in accordance with our policy which is available for 

inspection at our offices for a period of seven days after 20 

September 2016 or until the time of collection after 20 

September 2016, whichever is sooner. Lots purchased after 20 

September 2016 will be covered in accordance with our policy for 

seven days from the date of sale or until the time of collection, 

whichever is sooner. 

5.5.3 Our policy will not cover and we are unable to accept 

responsibility for damage caused by woodworm, changes in 

atmospheric conditions or acts of terrorism.

5.6 Notification 

We are not able to notify successful buyers by telephone. While 

Invoices are sent out by mail or email after the sale we do not accept 

responsibility for notifying you of the result of your offer. You are 

requested to contact us by telephone or in person to obtain details of 

the outcome of your offers to avoid incurring charges for late 

payment. 

5.7 Packing and handling 

5.7.1 We shall use all reasonable endeavours to take care when 

handling and packing a purchased Lot but remind you that after 

seven days or from the time of collection, whichever is sooner, 

the Lot is entirely at your risk. Our postage charges are set out at 

the back of these terms. 

5.7.2 It is the responsibility of the Buyer to be aware of any Import 

Duties that may be incurred upon importation to the final 

destination. Spink will not accept return of any package in order 

to avoid these duties. The onus is also on the Buyer to be aware 

of any Customs import restrictions that prohibit the importation 

of certain collectibles. Spink will not accept return of the Lot(s) 

under these circumstances. Spink will not accept responsibility for 

Lot(s) seized or destroyed by Customs. 

5.7.3 If the Buyer requires delivery of the Lot to an address other 

than the invoice address this will be carried out at the discretion 

of Spink. 

5.8 Recommended packers and shippers 

If required our shipping department may arrange shipment as your 

agent. Although we may suggest carriers if specifically requested, our 

suggestions are made on the basis of our general experience of such 

parties in the past and we are not responsible to any person to whom 

we have made a recommendation for the acts or omissions of the 

third parties concerned. 

5.9 Remedies for non-payment or failure to collect purchases 

5.9.1 If you fail to make payment within seven days of your 

stipulated payment date set out in your invoice, we shall be 

entitled to exercise one or more of the following rights or 

remedies: 

5.9.1.1 to charge interest at the rate of 2% per month compound 

interest, calculated on a daily basis, from the date the full 

amount is due; 

5.9.1.2 to set off against any amounts which the Spink Group 

may owe you in any other transaction the outstanding amount 

remaining unpaid by you; 

5.9.1.3 we may keep hold of all or some of your Lots or other 

property in the possession of the Spink Group until you have 

paid all the amounts you owe us or the Spink Group, even if 

the unpaid amounts do not relate to those Lots or other 

property. Following fourteen days’ notice to you of the 

amount outstanding and remaining unpaid, the Spink Group 

shall have the right to arrange the sale of such Lots or other 

property. We shall apply the proceeds in discharge of the 

amount outstanding to us or the Spink Group, and pay any 

balance to you; 

5.9.1.4 where several amounts are owed by you to the Spink 

Group in respect of different transactions, to apply any amount 

paid to discharge any amount owed in respect of any particular 

transaction, whether or not you so direct; 

5.9.1.5 to reject at any future auction any bids made by you or 

on your behalf or obtain a deposit from you before accepting 

any bids. 

5.9.2 If you fail to make payment within thirty-five days, we shall in 

addition be entitled: 

5.9.2.1 to cancel the sale of the Lot or any other item sold to you 

at the same or any other sale; 

5.9.2.2 to arrange a resale of the Lot, publicly or privately, and, 

if this results in a lower price being obtained, claim the balance 

from you together with all reasonable costs including a 20% 

seller’s commission, expenses, damages, legal fees, 

commissions, premiums and fees of whatever kind associated 

with both sales or otherwise, incurred in connection with your 

failure to make payment; 

5.9.2.3 when reselling the Lot, place a notice in our catalogue 

stating that you successfully purchased the Lot but have 

subsequently failed to pay the Hammer Price of the Lot; or 

5.9.2.4 take any other appropriate action as we deem fit. 

5..9.3 Where purchases are not collected within seven days after the 

sale, whether or not payment has been made, you will be 

required to pay a storage charge of £2 per item per day plus 

any additional handling cost that may apply. You will not be 

entitled to collect the Lot until all outstanding charges are 

met, together with payment of all other amounts due to us. 

5.10 Uses of default information 

If you fail to make payment for a Lot in accordance with these Terms 

and Conditions: 

5.10.1 we reserve the right to refuse you the right to make bids or 

offers for any future auction or sale irrespective of whether 

previous defaults have been settled; and 

5.10.2 you consent to us disclosing details of such default to other 

auctioneers and live bidding platforms, which will include your 

name, address, nature of the default and the date of the 

default. 

Auctioneers or live bidding platforms who receive details of 

the default may rely on such information when deciding 

whether to enter into a transaction with you in the future. 

5.11 Export Licence 

5.11.1 If required we can, at our discretion, advise you on the 

detailed provisions of the export licensing regulations. Where we 

advise you in relation to export licensing regulations the ultimate 

responsibility in respect of any export will lie with you and we will 

not be responsible for your failure to apply for any necessary 

licences. 

5.11.2 If the Lot is going to be hand carried by you, you may be 

required to produce a valid export licence to us or sign a waiver 

document stating that a licence will be applied for. 

5.11.3 You should always check whether an export licence is 

required before exporting. Export licences are usually obtained 

within two or three weeks but delays can occur. 

5.11.4 Unless otherwise agreed by us in writing, the fact that you 

wish to apply for an export licence does not affect your obligation 

to make payment within seven days nor our right to charge 

interest on late payment. 

5.11.5 If you request that we apply for an export licence on your 

behalf, we shall be entitled to recover from you our 

disbursements and out of pocket expenses in relation to such 

application, together with any relevant VAT. 

5.11.6 We will not be obliged to rescind a sale nor to refund any 

interest or other expenses incurred by you where payment is 

made by you despite the fact that an export licence is required. 

5.12 Refund in the case of Forgery 

5.12.1 A sale will be cancelled, and the amount paid refunded to you 

if a Lot (other than a miscellaneous item not described in the 

catalogue) sold by us proves to have been a Forgery. We shall not 

however be obliged to refund any amounts if either (a) the 

catalogue description or saleroom notice at the auction date 

corresponded to the generally accepted opinion of scholars or 

experts at that time, or fairly indicated that there was a conflict of 

opinions, or (b) it can be demonstrated that the Lot is a Forgery 

only by means of either a scientific process not generally accepted 

for use until after publication of the catalogue or a process which 

at the date of the auction was unreasonably expensive or 

impracticable or likely to have caused damage to the Lot. 

Furthermore, you should note that this refund can be obtained 

only if the following conditions are met: 

5.12.1.1 you must notify us in writing, within seven days of the 

receipt of the Lot(s), that in your view the Lot concerned is a 

Forgery; 

5.12.1.2 you must then return the item to us within fourteen 

days from receipt of the Lot(s), in the same condition as at the 

auction date; and 

5.12.1.3 as soon as possible following return of the Lot, you 

must produce evidence satisfactory to us that the Lot is a 

Forgery and that you are able to transfer good title to us, free 

from any third party claims. 

5.12.1.4 you must provide to us all evidence obtained by you 

that a Lot is a Forgery no later than 7 days after you receive 

such evidence. 

5.12.2 In no circumstances shall we be required to pay you any more 

than the amount paid by you for the Lot concerned and you shall 

have no claim for interest. 

5.12.3 The benefit of this guarantee is not capable of being 

transferred, and is solely for the benefit of the person to whom 

the original invoice was made out by us in respect of the Lot 

when sold and who, since the sale, has remained the owner of the 

Lot without disposing of any interest in it to any third party. 

5.12.4 We shall be entitled to rely on any scientific or other process 

to establish that the Lot is not a Forgery, whether or not such 

process was used or in use at the date of the auction.

6 LIABILITY 

Nothing in these Terms and Conditions limits or excludes our liability for: 

6.1 death or personal injury resulting from negligence; or 

6.2 any damage or liability incurred by you as a result of our fraud or 

fraudulent misrepresentation. 

7 USE OF YOUR PERSONAL INFORMATION 

7.1 We will use the personal information you provide to us to: 

7.1.1 process the offers or bids you make on Lots (whether 

successful or otherwise) and other auction related services we 

provide; 

7.1.2 process your payment relating to a successful purchase of a 

Lot; 

7.1.3 arrange for delivery of any Lot you purchase, which will 

include passing your details to shipping providers and, on 

overseas deliveries, to customs where they make enquiries 

regarding the Lot; 

7.1.4 inform you about similar products or services that we provide, 

but you may stop receiving these at any time by contacting us. 

7.2 In accordance with clause 4.2, you agree that we may pass your 

information to credit reference agencies and that they may keep a 

record of any search that they do. 

7.3 In accordance with clause 5.10, you agree that where you default on 

making payment for a Lot in accordance with these terms and 

conditions we may disclose details of such default to other auctioneers 

and live bidding platforms. 

7.4 We are also working closely with third parties (including, for example, 

other auctioneers and live bidding platforms) and may receive 

information about you from them. 

8 COPYRIGHT 

8.1 We shall have the right (on a non-exclusive basis) to photograph, 

video or otherwise produce an image of the Lot. All rights in such an 

image will belong to us, and we shall have the right to use it in 

whatever way we see fit. 

8.2 The copyright in all images, illustrations and written material relating 

to a Lot is and shall remain at all times our property and we shall have 

the right to use it in whatever way we see fit. You shall not use or 

allow anyone else to use such images, illustrations or written material 

without our prior written consent. 

9 VAT 

You shall give us all relevant information about your VAT status. If we incur 

any unforeseen cost or expense as a result of the information being 

incorrect, you will reimburse to us on demand the full amount incurred. 

10 NOTICES 

All notices given under these Terms and Conditions may be served 

personally, sent by 1st class post, or faxed to the address given to the sender 

by the other party. Any notice sent by post will be deemed to have been 

received on the second working day after posting or, if the addressee is 

overseas, on the fifth working day after posting. Any notice sent by fax or 

served personally will be deemed to be delivered on the first working day 

following despatch. 

11 ADDITIONAL PROVISIONS 

The following provisions of this clause 11 shall apply only if you are acting 

for the purposes of your business. 

11.1 Limitation of Liability 

Subject to clause 6, we shall not be liable, whether in tort (including 

for negligence) or breach of statutory duty, contract, 

misrepresentation or otherwise for any: 

11.1.1 loss of profits, loss of business, depletion of goodwill and/or 

similar losses, loss of anticipated savings, loss of goods, loss of 

contract, loss of use, loss of corruption of data or information; or 

11.1.2 any special, indirect, consequential or pure economic loss, 

costs, damages, charges or expenses. 

11.2 Severability 

If any part of these Terms and Condition is found by any court to be 

invalid, illegal or unenforceable, that part may be discounted and the 

rest of the conditions shall continue to be valid and enforceable to the 

fullest extent permitted by law. 

11.3 Force majeure 

We shall have no liability to you if we are prevented from, or delayed 

in performing, our obligations under these Terms and Conditions or 

from carrying on our business by acts, events, omissions or accidents 

beyond our reasonable control, including (without limitation) strikes, 

lock-outs or other industrial disputes (whether involving our 

workforce or the workforce of any other party), failure of a utility 

service or transport network, act of God, war, riot, civil commotion, 

malicious damage, compliance with any law or governmental order, 

rule, regulation or direction, accident, breakdown of plant or 

machinery, fire, flood, storm or default of suppliers or 

subcontractors. 

11.4 Waiver 

11.4.1 A waiver of any right under these Terms and Conditions is 

only effective if it is in writing and it applies only to the 

circumstances for which it is given. No failure or delay by a party 

in exercising any right or remedy under these Terms and 

Conditions or by law shall constitute a waiver of that (or any 

other) right or remedy, nor preclude or restrict its further 

exercise. No single or partial exercise of such right or remedy shall 

preclude or restrict the further exercise of that (or any other) 

right or remedy. 

11.4.2 Unless specifically provided otherwise, rights arising under 

these Terms and Conditions are cumulative and do not exclude 

rights provided by law. 

11.5 Law and Jurisdiction 

11.5.1 These Terms and Conditions and any dispute or claim arising 

out of or in connection with them or their subject matter, shall 

be governed by, and construed in accordance with, the law of 

England and Wales. 

11.5.2 The parties irrevocably agree that the courts of England and 

Wales shall have exclusive jurisdiction to settle any dispute or 

claim that arises out of, or in connection with, Terms and 

Conditions or their subject matter.
