CORK HANDBAGS. REDESIGNED.

„Cork is one of Europe’s most traditional and versatile raw materials.
Its latest discovery in Haute Couture is set to revolutionise the world’s
vision of sustainable fashion.
LE SURI is at the forefront of this change. We are the first label to
create unique bags using 100% cork, combining contemporary design
with traditional high quality materials.”
LE SURI is an innovative handbag label creating
unique bags made from 100% cork. With this original
concept the brand aims to break the rules of the
traditional leather handbag industry and show
the re(de)fined face of sustainable fashion while
proving that contemporary chic, classical elegance
and eco-friendliness can go hand-in-hand.
LE SURI was established in London in 2013 by
Nina Tack and Paab Pruchniewski, who share
a passion for sustainable design as well as a love
of Portugal – the “home country“ of cork. Having
lived in Portugal before, they had encountered
cork and recognised its powerful qualities as an
eco-friendly alternative to animal leather. Cork fabric
is very soft, ultralight, durable and feels like fine,
smooth leather. Most importantly for fashion-lovers,
cork has a stunning and incomparable look.
Cork has traditionally only been used in small-scale
local handicraft and has, therefore, remained largely
undiscovered by the fashion industry’s mass markets.
LE SURI is led by its mission to change this, by creating
unique modern handbags that are both ethically
and environmentally flawless and yet still appeal
to a wider fashion-conscious audience.

The cork material we use originates from the bark of cork oak trees
that are grown at local family-run farms in the South of Portugal.
The bark is only harvested from the trees once every 9 years, thereby
allowing them to recover fully. Cork trees are the only trees that do not
need to be cut down in order to obtain the raw material. Harvesting
the oaks actually contributes significantly to the trees’ well-being
and enables them to continue growing for centuries.
Over a lifetime, harvested trees absorb 3-5 times more carbon dioxide
than those that are left un-harvested. Cork trees in Portugal alone help
to offset more than 10 million tons of carbon each year.
The process of manufacturing the cork material used in our handbags
requires the use of a variety of different advanced technologies. Bearing
in mind that our cork textile is created from the same raw material
as that from which wine stoppers are made, the cork needs to undergo
a specific technical procedure consisting of: cork selection, unification,
processing and strengthening.

„We aspire to become the first globally recognized
fashion brand to have introduced cork as a highly
reputable alternative to animal leather to a wider
fashion-conscious audience.
By transforming the perception of cork from eco-only
to fashion-first, we want to contribute to the sustainable
development of the fashion industry as a whole.
We are convinced that ethical fashion is the future
and that we can succeed if we stay true to our values.”
