FROM THE
EDITOR
Africa is an amazing continent with
countries that represent a true
diversity of culture, landscapes
and language. From the desert
sands in Casablanca to the rooftop
bars and live bands in Nairobi,
there is much to see on this vast
continent.
We also know that there is a long
way to go when it comes to
changing the perception of the
African continent. Travelers know
that the 54 countries that make up
the largest continent in the world
are more complex than what's
shown on television. I recently had
to tell someone that yes, there are
hotels in African countries!
In this issue, we feature the story
of a traveler's voyage to Kenya,
South Africa and Tanzania. We
have fallen in love with all that
Africa has to offer, from world
class shopping in Dar es Salaam to
historical tours of Ghana and the
Wildebeest migration in Kenya.
With dropping airfares, new
development and a welcoming
attitude toward tourism, there has
never been a better time to see all
that Africa's lands have to offer.
AMAZING
TANZANIA,
SOUTH AFRICA
AND ZANZIBAR
We caught up with traveler Kirreck Williams of
New Jersey to find out about his amazing voyage to
Tanzania, Zanzibar and South Africa.
BROADEN: What countries did you visit and how long
did you stay?
Williams: We visited South Africa and Tanzania. In
South Africa, we did Johannesburg and Cape Town.
In Tanzania, we landed near Mount Kilimanjaro and
did safaris in Tarangire National Park, Lake Manyara
and Ngorongoro Crater before ending our trip on
Zanzibar Island.
We did about a day and a half in Jo-Burg, a quick
tour of Pretoria, five days in Cape Town, three day
safari in Tanzania and five days in Zanzibar.
BROADEN: What prompted the trip? Was it a special
occasion?
Williams: No special occasion, my wife and I just
wanted to start visiting African nations. In the past,
travel to the continent seemed to be so expensive,
but now flights are so much more reasonable.
BROADEN: Was there anything surprising that you
experienced during your visit?
Williams: My biggest surprise was probably how
mixed socially South Africa was, considering this
country was under a severe, violent apartheid
system just 20-plus years ago. It surprised me how
mixed the popular lounges, restaurants and common
areas were. On a lighter note, another surprise was
the universal (continues)

love of Jamaican culture, fueled by
reggae, of course. My wife, who was
born and raised in Jamaica, found
this both amusing and prideful. in
Zanzibar, the convenience store next
to our hotel played mostly reggae
the entire time it was open.
At the Full Moon party, one
Rastafarian spent 20 minutes of our
time espousing his love for Jamaica,
though he had never been. By the
way, I highly recommend people
going to Zanzibar around the full
moon to attend a Kendra Rock Full
Moon party!
BROADEN: Were you able to immerse
yourself in the culture? Where did
you stay during your trip?
In South Africa we used AirBnBs. We
stayed in a local apartment building
in Maboneng area of Johannesburg, a
former rocket factory turned into
lofts. Maboneng reminded me of
Bushwick Brooklyn. Old blue collar
neighborhood of factories and low
income family dwellings now in a
transitional phase of hip restaurants,
lounges and open-space food
markets.
"MABONENG REMINDED ME OF
BROOKLYN...A BLUE COLLAR
NEIGHBORHOOD OF FACTORIES,
HIP RESTAURANTS, AND OPEN-
SPACE FOOD MARKETS."
The highlight for me was Soweto, the
former home of both Mandela and
Bishop Tutu, along Vilakazi Street.
After visiting Mabida’s home, which
is now a museum, we ate and drank
at Sakhumzi, one of the more popular
restaurants and lounges in the area.
In Cape Town, we had a great
apartment right in Greenmarket
Square next to Long Street. Long
Street is the Bourbon Street of Cape
Town. (continues)

PLACES THAT
LEAVES YOU
SPEECHLESS
The parallel streets of Kloof and Brees remind me
more of the East Village & Chelsea in New York –
restaurants and lounges like Long Street, but more
subdued and trendy.
We did hire local Black-owned company, Camissa
Tours, for tours of the local townships outside of
Cape Town where so many working-class Black South
Africans still live. We did walking tours with local
guides who live in those communities, and even
visited a school.
We visited a couple of Black-owned wineries, the
highlight being Seven Sisters in Schellenbosch.
Vivian Kleynhans, the founder and owner, is a
phenomenal woman. Her story of breaking into the
White male-dominated wine industry is a must-hear.
And then there was Mzoli’s braai! Located in a
shanty part of Gugulethu Township, this bbq/day
party is must-do if you’re a deep house music and
meat lover. Mr. Mzoli invited us to sit in his section
as his guests.
In Tanzania, we stayed in a bungalow right on the
plains. After sundown, you’re not allowed to go from
bungalow to main lodge area without an armed guard.
You can hear the animals at night walk past your
bungalow, not to mention a nocturnal lion pride that
roams the area. When else in life are you going to
worry about whether a lion has the ability to open a
door?
The next night we were high in the mountains of the
Ngorongoro rim, in a beautiful hotel lodge. In
Tanzania, we stayed in a bungalow right on the
"It was also the friendliness of the people there,
throughout our entire time in Tanzania..."
BROADEN: Can you tell me a bit more about your animal
sightings? Also about your trip to Zanzibar?
Williams: For our safari, we used Happy World Safari.
We saw almost every animal possible from groups of
elephants, prides of lions, pools of hippos to flocks of
birds such as beautiful flamingos. We even saw two
rhinos which can be very difficult to find on safari. One
of the most surreal moments was walking past groups
of wildebeest and zebras on a wilderness walk from our
lodge to the edge of Lake Manyara with our Massai
guide. That was my wife’s favorite part of the safari.
We also walked past the bones of a Cape Buffalo,
picked thoroughly.
Zanzibar was a surreal experience. First, there is the
Indian Ocean so warm, crystal clear teal blue and
beautiful. On our excursion, we went to dock at Paje
Beach for lunch – the tide was so far out we walked
past starfish, boats and jet skis that were stuck in dry
sand. Hours later, the entire coastline was immersed
under water. We chose Nungwi Beach to book our hotel
stay on – it’s on a bay and has the least amount of tide
shift so there’s always enough water to swim in. We
chose Nungwi Beach to book our hotel stay–
there’s always enough water to swim in.
Stone Town was remarkable, the white Moorish
architecture was beautiful. The Old Slave Market and
museum is a must! I had some of my favorite meals on
our trips to Stone Town. First was at the rooftop tea
room of the Emerson on Hurumzi hotel, the highest
point in the city, where you sit and are served
traditional Swahili style three-course meals. The other
was the famed night food court of Forodhani Gardens. I
highly recommend getting the urojo soup and Zanzibar
pizza.
But it was also the friendliness of the people there,
really throughout our entire time in Tanzania, not just
Zanzibar. And I have to say, being in Tanzania as a
majority black country and seeing most of the
establishments and companies black-owned felt special
for me, given my experience growing up in the United
States.
AFRICA
When most people think of pristine beaches, azure waters
and swaying palms, the Caribbean immediately comes to
mind. With miles of coastline, several African countries
have some of the most amazing beaches in the world. A
well-kept secret among travel enthusiasts, beaches in
South Africa, Tanzania, Cameroon and Kenya deliver a
paradise on earth that are sanctuaries for water lovers.
Zanzibar
Just a 75-minute ferry ride from Tanzania's Dar es
Salaam is a paradise of turquoise waters, banana palms,
mangroves and coconut trees. Nicknamed “Africa's Spice
Island,” Zanzibar boasts miles of beachfront, restaurants
and resorts. The island's main destination, Stone Town,
offers a mix of leisure, architecture and history. Its
architecture is reflective of its Swahili culture, and
features a blend of Persian, Arab, Indian and European
history. Stone Town was designated a UNESCO World
Heritage Site in 2000, and is a favorite of tourists from
around the globe. (continued)

Mafia Island
“Mafia,” the Arabic word for archipelago, is one of the
most romantic and secluded islands on the eastern coast
of Africa. Just 20 miles from Dar es Salaam, the island is
teeming with reefs packed with sea turtles, stingrays
and reef sharks. A favorite of honeymooners, divers and
fishermen, Mafia Island is one of the travel community's
best kept secrets.
Mafia Island's government takes great pains to keep the
island free of overpopulation, and plays host to just
1,400 visitors each year. With no major chain hotels on
the island, the focus here is on seclusion. You can find
many footprint free beaches on Mafia Island and spend
your days lazing away on a hammock without the
distraction of crowds and noise.
Mauritius
A 24-hour flight from New York City, the beauty of
Mauritius lies in its seclusion. A hideaway for couples,
artists or anyone who wants to experience paradise on
earth, Mauritius features miles of pristine, untouched
coastline. The island, which is 1,200 miles off the
Southeastern coast, is a sparsely populated archipelago
teeming with coral reefs, crystal waters and subtropical
temperatures year round. The country is 63 percent
Indian and features two UNESCO World Heritage sites.
The island is filled with luxury hotels and is one of the
world's top destinations for deep sea fishing. Flights to
WITH A GROUP
TRAVEL EXPERT
When it comes to group travel, it can be hard to
find the right travel planner to make your voyage
memorable. Shanterria Thornton, President of
Travel Divas, operates one of the most successful
group travel companies on the market and plans
more than 25 trips each year to countries like
Thailand, Switzerland and the Canary Islands.
The Travel Divas also hosts a number of
themed travel events like jaunts to the Essence
Music Festival, Mardi Gras weekends and singles
cruises.
Q. You've been doing this for 10 years, what are
some of the trends that you have seen? Is there
one destination that is more popular than
others? Are travelers gravitating more to one
destination over others?
A: The trend right now with African American
travelers is solo traveling. It is liberating and well
as fearful. But most conquer the fear of traveling
alone and just do it. The trend is also
documenting their travel through social media.
Most travelers post throughout their travels as if
they were keeping a visual travel journal.
Some of the more popular destinations right now are
Greece, Dubai, Thailand, and African countries. Two
popular dream destinations are Tahiti and Bora Bora.
Something about those over-water huts is very appealing.
Q. How many tours do you plan annually? Do you have the
same people who travel with you each time or are you
seeing new faces?
A: Travel Divas hosts 25+ group trips each year, both
domestic and international. That's in addition to the
private reservations we book for our clients. We have
amazing repeat clients that travel with us yearly. Between
Q. Why is travel so alluring for women of color? What do
they gain from world travel?
A: Being a woman of color in our current world is
demanding. We've been the backbone of our families for
generations, and I think for so long we've looked out for
others before ourselves.
Women are realizing that making your well-being a priority
is not selfish, it’s necessary.
Traveling is a form of self-care. It recharges you, builds
confidence, it can be educational, and it’s fun! It gives you
a break from the responsibilities of everyday life, and
opens you up to cultures and experiences that you won’t
get by staying in one place.
The experiences that you gain are invaluable, and it’s
honestly powerful to travel abroad and see so many
representations of women of color.
Get an Airfare Payment Plan
traveling on a
When people share their travel photos, one of the first
budget tight
questions people ask is “how can you afford to travel
the world?” Travel does not have to be expensive.
Many travel veterans love sharing stories of traveling
the globe on $500 or less per trip. Whether you're
catching fare glitches, taking advantage of layovers,
using hostels and homestays or simply taking short
weekend trips, there are many ways to travel, even on
a tight budget.
Saving on Airfare
For most travelers, the most expensive part of the
journey is airfare. Many world travelers use a
variety of sites to scout out the best travel deals on
flights. Sites like Google Flights, Hopper and
Skyscanner aggregate fares from around the Web
Did you know that you could make payments on
your airline tickets? There are several ways to do
this. First, you can find travel companies that offer
packages that include air. With these companies,
you make one deposit that includes both your
airfare and tours. Companies like Trafalgar, Contiki
Tours (35 and younger) and G Adventures all
feature packages that include airfare. For most
companies, you can make a deposit of as little as
$200 to lock in your price for both airfare and tours.
If you are planning to take a cruise, you can also
bundle the cost of your airfare into your cruise
ticket and pay off both over a period of months or
years.
A new company, Airfordable, offers a layaway
program for flights. With their service (continues)

(continued)
you make a down payment and pay off the rest of
your flight costs over time. The company does not
perform credit checks, and offers both weekly and
bi-weekly payment plans. Check out
www.airfordable.com for more details.
Work at a Hostel
It can be a short story about a destination or a
first-hand account of something new or interesting
that you discovered. Not only will you get paid, you
will also get published, which is an added bonus.
Tip: Contact the magazine before you travel to find
out if there is any specific content they are
seeking. If you can take photos too, you can
negotiate a higher price.
One of the best ways to stay for free is by working
for a hostel. Hostels are in constant need of
assistants who can answer phones, check in
guests, clean rooms and provide marketing
assistance. They often hire travelers to fill these
roles in exchange for a free bed. Working at a
hostel is convenient if you are planning to stay for
a month or longer, but some hostels even hire
people for short term stays. Because they cater to
travelers, they often allow you to work in shifts that
allow you time to explore your destination before
and after work. Sites like www.hosteljobs.com are
a good place to start. Another way to get work is to
simply contact the hostel you're interested in and
ask if they need help.
Work as a Destination Wedding Specialist
Can you officiate a wedding in the Bahamas or a
vow renewal celebration in Mexico? Many couples
have symbolic ceremonies abroad, then handle the
legal details when they return to the States. Still,
they will need someone to officiate their
destination weddings. You can work as a freelance
photographer, florist, makeup artist, entertainer or
videographer while spending your free time
enjoying your destination. Some destination
wedding specialists travel with their couples and
perform their services free of charge in exchange
for room, board and airfare.
Sell Your Stories
Travel magazines and blogs are always in need of
fresh content. Locate a small travel magazine and
sell them a story about your travels.
Be a Tour Guide
Cities are heavy in tourism always need good
guides to meet customer demand. Sign up to be a
tour guide and make money by showing people
around. You can also make a little cash on the side
by giving "free" tours and relying on tips from your
participants.
If you plan to stay in one country for a while, get in
on the online travel groups and let everyone know
that you're in XYZ city for a month. They will
naturally gravitate to you and rely on you for advice
while they're visiting.
Be a Travel Agent or Concierge
You know this list would not be complete without
mentioning the "travel agent" route. Planning group
tours is a great way to see the world for free.
If you enjoy working with large groups and
coordinating all of the travel, you can see the world
for free. There are two ways to do this. First, you
can become a certified travel agent and book your
own tours. You can go through one of the many
certifying agencies (CLIA, ASTA, IATA), get industry
credentials and make commission from your tour
sales.
The second way to travel free is to simply get a
group together, locate an agent and have them do
the planning. All you have to do is travel. Group
leaders usually travel free when they bring along a
certain number of people (10 for land tours, 16 for
cruises). You won't get a commission but you will
get a free room or cruise ship cabin. ( continues)

Teach a Class
Are you good at something? Are you proficient in
a software that most people are not? Can you
teach other people how to do what you do at
work?
You can teach online and make money from
anywhere in the world. Sites like Udemy are
popular with world travelers. They can go
anywhere there is an Internet connection and
make cash for teaching. You can teach English,
business management, social media marketing,
database management---whatever you are good
at---and make money while you travel.
Travel
magazines will
pay you for
your travel
photos
and stories
Sell Your Photos
If you are great at taking photos, you can make
money selling them to stock photo websites. The
key here is to take photos of what the stock
photo sites will want, not what you think is
amazing.
Photos of landmarks, vistas and wildlife are
always popular. Some photographers make a few
dollars each time their photo is sold, and this can
add up to hundreds of dollars a day. As with your
travel stories, you can also sell them to travel
magazines and bloggers.
Don't let a tight budget keep you from seeing the
world. There are many ways that you can make
money while you travel, save on flights and get
free stays across the globe. Get creative and
start traveling.

Senegal's African Renaissance Monument Reflects
Strength of the Continent
by Melvin Mason
The African Renaissance Monument is a modern
architectural monument and one of the most sought after
landmarks for travelers to Senegal. The statue, which
serves as a tribute to the strength of family and survival,
stands more than 160 feet tall---one foot taller than the
Statue of Liberty and towers over the Atlantic Ocean.
More than one million people have visited the statue since
it was built in 2010, and it continues to draw huge daily
crowds.
The statute, which was dedicated in honor of Senegal’s
50th anniversary of independence from France, is a
massive bronze structure (continues)

that sits atop a hill and features a man, woman and child
emerging from a volcano.
Former Senegalese President Aboulaye Wade said the
monument symbolized Africa freeing itself from “centuries
of imprisonment in the abyssal depths of ignorance,
intolerance and racism to retrieve its place on this land,
which belongs to all races, in light, air and freedom.”
Visitors can climb the stairs leading to the monument and
then pay to take a tour inside the statue. The tour features
photos of famous African leaders including Zimbabwe’s
Robert Mugabe, South Africa’s Nelson Mandela and Ghana’s
Kwame Nkrumah.
Black leaders from other nations are also featured, including
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Malcolm X and Marcus Garvey.
Paintings and authentic African sculptures are also featured
in rooms inside the monument, giving visitors a history
lesson.
The highlight of the trip, however, is reaching the crown of
the man’s head. A short elevator ride allows visitors a view
of the skyline of Dakar.
Many have declared the African Renaissance Monument a
bucket list destination. Direct flights to Dakar depart from
New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport and
Boston’s Logan Airport and last about eight hours.

WHERE WILL WE GO
After the two-year design period was complete, the question
remained, “Where will we go with Celebrity Edge first?” With
an incredible ship designed to highlight the destinations, we
decided to start in the corner of the world so often referred to
as “paradise”—the Caribbean islands. Celebrity Edge offers two
sun-drenched itineraries from Fort Lauderdale, FL.
The first is an eastern Caribbean journey that visits San Juan,
Puerto Rico; Tortola, British Virgin Islands (a first for Celebrity),
and Philipsburg, St. Maarten. The second itinerary is a western
Caribbean voyage to Key West, Florida; Costa Maya, Mexico;
Cozumel, Mexico; and George Town, Grand Cayman.
But why choose just one? See it all by booking back-to-back
sailings for a 14-night luxurious journey. The minute you set
sail, you’ll feel completely connected to the islands around
you—and every shimmering nautical mile of sea that connects
them.
