Exhibitor rulEs<br />

Exhibitors are required to read the rules carefully & send in their entry forms as soon as possible.<br />

1. The price of admission for adults will be $7.00 (includes applicable government taxes) per day, children under 12 free. Cars may<br />

be parked on the grounds Free of charge Friday August 10th, <strong>2012</strong>, Saturday August 11th, <strong>2012</strong> and Sunday August 12th, <strong>2012</strong>.<br />

<strong>Fair</strong> passes are available for a fee of $15.00 (includes applicable government taxes) and allows admittance to the grounds at<br />

any time during the fair.<br />

2. The membership fee is $5.00, which entitles the member to become an exhibitor.<br />

3. The Society will be indemnified & hold harmless and not responsible for accidents on the grounds at any time during the fair.<br />

4. Exhibitors winning $5.00 or over in prize money shall leave $5.00 with the Society for membership the following year.<br />

5. It is desired that all entries be made on printed forms. If forms are required, the same may be acquired from the Secretary before<br />

the fair at the board office - see page 31. of the <strong>Fair</strong> <strong>Book</strong>let<br />

6. Exhibits must be bona fide property of the exhibitor.<br />

7. Exhibitors are responsible for their own exhibits, but the Society will do everything in its power to ensure their safety & care.<br />

8. The Judges’ decision will be final and any interference will cause a forfeit of the prize money.<br />

9. If weather is unfavourable, Society reserves the right to postpone or cancel the <strong>Fair</strong> or to pay any percentage of the prize money.<br />

10. All entry forms in livestock and poultry must be in the hands of the Secretary for Thursday, July 21st. The Society will not be<br />

responsible for room if entries are not in on dates specified.<br />

11. All entries in roots and vegetables, grain and seeds, and Women’s Department must be submitted by 8:30 p.m. Thursday August<br />

9th, <strong>2012</strong> and all entry forms must be in the hands of the Secretary by 8:30 p.m. Thursday August 9th, <strong>2012</strong>.<br />

12. All exhibitors must have exhibits on the grounds as follows: Ponies for Children’s Show 9:00 a.m., Saturday August 11th, <strong>2012</strong>;<br />

Sheep 9:30 a.m., Friday August 10th, <strong>2012</strong>; Poultry 9:00 a.m., Friday August 10th, <strong>2012</strong>; Roots and Vegetables 8:30 p.m.,<br />

Thursday August 9th, <strong>2012</strong>. - If exhibits are late, no prizes will be awarded.<br />

13. An entry fee will be charged on Bantams, Pigeons and Rabbits shown by children.<br />

14. ALL EXHIBITS CAN NOT BE REMOVED FROM DISPLAY BEFORE 5:00 P.M. ON Sunday August 12th, <strong>2012</strong>.<br />

15. No person will be allowed more than one entry per section per class, except livestock.<br />

16. No exhibitor may collect prize money from more than two entries in each livestock section. However, more may be shown to<br />

qualify for group entries (livestock).<br />

17. No animal may win more than one prize except in Specials and team groups.<br />

18. All space rented must be paid in advance.<br />

19. <strong>Fair</strong> Board Office will be open in the Lakeshore Community Centre from Thursday August 9th, <strong>2012</strong>, from 1:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.<br />

to take entry forms. ABSOLUTELY NO ENTRIES WILL BE ACCEPTED AFTER 8:30 P.M.<br />

20. All special prizes must be picked up immediately. As far as possible, all special prizes must be in the office on the day of <strong>Fair</strong>.<br />

21. All exhibtors must be members. Junior membership is free but must also have an exhibitor number to participate.<br />

22. An entry fee will be charged for fowl. For further information, see the Poultry Division.<br />

23. If an exhibit is not worthy of a prize, according to the Judge, no prize will be awarded.<br />

24. Trophies will be presented at the <strong>Fair</strong>.<br />

25. No alcoholic beverages allowed on the grounds at any time - except in Beer Garden.<br />

26. The driver only of vehicle bringing in livestock to be exhibited at fair will be admitted free.<br />

27. Sheep, goats, poultry, rabbits, ducks, geese and pigeons are not to be removed before 5:00 p.m. on the last day.<br />

28. In case there is a shortage of gate receipts, the directors have decided to pay a percentage of the prize money instead of the full<br />

amount.<br />

To eliminate long line ups at the Sec office on Thursday, entry forms are available at www.comberfair.on.ca<br />

and at <strong>Comber</strong>’s TRU Country & Garden. Completed forms can be dropped off at <strong>Comber</strong>’s TRU Country &<br />

Garden by July 31st.<br />

Dear Friends,<br />

County <strong>Fair</strong>s are ingrained in the fibers of this country and the<br />

153rd Annual <strong>Comber</strong> <strong>Fair</strong> is going to continue a tradition of<br />

excellence. Where else could you go to get the great entertainment<br />

and competition of a county fair while installing the community with<br />

family values and good memories?<br />

The residents of the <strong>Comber</strong>/lakeshore community can have the<br />

confidence in the fact that the goals of the Board of Directors have<br />

changed very little in the last 153 years in regards to providing a<br />

safe place where childhood memories can be remembered and new<br />

memories with your family and friends can be realized and revitalized.<br />

Make sure YOU take time to visit every part of the fair. View the home<br />

crafts of canning, needle work, and other displays. Walk through the<br />

animal barns. Enjoy Carter Shows Midway and don’t forget to relax<br />

at our beer tent. Enjoy the various vendors and all famous <strong>Fair</strong> Food<br />

at the food courts.<br />

As president I am proud that this fair has been produced annually for<br />

now a 153 years by a good group of volunteers and businesses.<br />

The Board of Directors operate the grounds year round and with the<br />

exception of <strong>Fair</strong> week lease the grounds to lakeshore Municipality<br />

to be utilized as a public recreational park serving East lakeshore<br />

residents.<br />

A special thanks must go the the men and women who are on the<br />

various committees and their volunteers whose efforts keep the fair<br />

going year after year.<br />

Come join us for the 153rd Annual <strong>Comber</strong> <strong>Fair</strong> August 10th -<br />

12th, <strong>2012</strong>. Rekindle relationships and build new ones.<br />

Come one; come all to the 153rd <strong>Comber</strong> <strong>Fair</strong>. If there’s one thing that never<br />

changes it’s celebrating the <strong>Comber</strong> <strong>Fair</strong> the first week-end in August.<br />

On behalf of the Town of Lakeshore Council, I wish to congratulate and<br />

commend the Agricultural Society and all the volunteers for their many hours of<br />

hard work and dedication.<br />

Each year holds a week-end of fun filled events and entertainment for people of all ages. Friendly<br />

smiles, conversations with friends, a place to meet, eat, gather and celebrate. The <strong>Comber</strong> <strong>Fair</strong><br />

continues to promote agriculture in this region through the various competitions and exhibitions.<br />

reGULATIoNS:<br />

1. This derby will consist of approx. five heats depending on<br />

number of entries, and one or two free for all. Heats will be<br />

stopped when three cars are still mobile. These drivers will<br />

receive $75.00 and a trophy each. They will also advance to<br />

the feature event. Winning driver of free for all will receive<br />

$60.00 and advance to feature event.<br />

2. Any North American made hardtop automobile or station<br />

convertibles, hearses, limousines or 4x4s allowed.<br />

3. Safety belts and approved helmets must be worn. Helmet<br />

shield, safety glasses or goggles must be worn.<br />

4. All glass including side markers, head and tail lights must<br />

be removed, windshield included. Rolling down windows<br />

is not permitted. (ALL GLASS MUST BE COMPLETELY<br />

REMOVED.)<br />

5. Headliner must be removed, chrome moldings, antenna,<br />

sunvisors, mirrors, plastics, all door handles, anything<br />

dangerous must be removed. Auto must be swept clean.<br />

6. Stock gas tank must be removed. An auxiliary tank of<br />

steel or neoprene construction is to be used. Auxiliary<br />

tank is not to exceed five (5) gallon capacity. Tank must be<br />

securely fastened down and covered. (Marine types highly<br />

recommended.)<br />

7. Auxiliary tank to be located no further ahead than the back<br />

of the front seat (in center area).<br />

8. Absolutely no one (1) to five (5) gallon carrying gas cans<br />

allowed for auxiliary tank. All caps, fittings, lines must be<br />

leakproof. Any fuel leakage will lead to disqualification.<br />

Electric fuel pumps must have on/off switch within reach of<br />

driver.<br />

9. Only one (1) 12 volt battery allowed in car. Battery must be<br />

securely fastened down and covered. (Passenger side floor<br />

recommended).<br />

10.Radiators are to remain in the stock position, or be removed.<br />

Electric fans may be used. Transmission coolers are to<br />

remain in the engine compartment. All A/C condensers must<br />

be removed. Large holes in firewall should be covered. Only<br />

water in radiators, no anti-freeze.<br />

11. Only stock bumpers for make of car, front & back. Bumper<br />

ends not to be cut, but no sharp edges or points. (Bumper<br />

shocks only may be welded). No support brackets from<br />

bumper to frame allowed.<br />

12. Cutting fenders for wheel clearance only is allowed.<br />

13.Left front drivers door must be painted white. All doors must<br />

be securely fastened shut with seat belt, wired, chained, or<br />

welded. If welded 3 pots 3 inches only. No welding on inside<br />

of doors. Driver will be disqualified if drivers door comes<br />

open. Inside of drivers door only may be reinforced for<br />

driver safety (but no overkill).<br />

14.You may install a driver compartment protection bar. This<br />

bar will be located behind drivers seat, and fastened between<br />

the left and right door pillars. Bar(s) in front (dash area) are<br />

permitted.<br />

15.It is recommended that engine mounts be chained, wired or<br />

16.Mandatory bar must be installed between roof and cowl<br />

(middle of windshield). This is to keep hood from coming<br />

into drivers compartment.<br />

17.Hood must have approximately a 12” hole cut out over the<br />

carburetor (in case of fire). Air filters are to be used.<br />

18.Hood must be fastened down in four (4) places, wired or<br />

chained. If using ready-rod with bolts and washers, readyrod<br />

is not to be welded or bolted to or through the frame.<br />

19.Trunk lid may only be fastened down up to eight (8) places,<br />

wired or chained. No ready-rod with bolts and washers to<br />

fasten down trunk lid. No welds or welding on trunk lid.<br />

20.No blocked or welded shocks, leaf springs to be stock and<br />

not altered. Coil spring lifters may be used, two per side<br />

“max” (twist in type). Car must move up and down with one<br />

man’s effort.<br />

21. No reinforcements of body or frame, welding, wiring or<br />

chaining, any part of the body to the frame is not permitted.<br />

Any welding of the frame is not permitted. Trailer hitches<br />

must be completely removed. Any excessive alteration will<br />

lead to automatic disqualification.<br />

22.Missing or rotted body mounts may be replaced with a<br />

hockey puck only, with no larger than stock size bolts and<br />

three inch (3”) washers to secure. 2 additional mounts are<br />

permitted. No direct body to frame mounting.<br />

23.Tires not to exceed 15” diameter. Snow tires may be used. 4<br />

cylinder class tires not to exceed 14” diameter. No liquid or<br />

foam filled tires. No studs, screws in rims to hold tires. All<br />

wheel balance weights must be removed.<br />

24.All cars must have brakes before each heat.<br />

25.Drivers may maneuver forward or backward. There will be<br />

no deliberate head-on collisions and no deliberate hitting on<br />

drivers door.<br />

26.A time limit will be announced by the judges. If a driver<br />

does not hit another car within time limit, he/she will be<br />

disqualified. Do not “sandbag” or “play possum”. This will<br />

lead to disqualification.<br />

27.Any car spilling gas or catching fire is automatically<br />

disqualified from his/her heat.<br />

28. Cars may be decorated but only in good taste.<br />

29.All cars will be inspected before the event. Winning feature<br />

cars will be inspected after feature event.<br />

30.Winning drivers must drive the same car in feature heat that<br />

they drove in their winning heat.<br />

31.Driver and two (2) mechanics only allowed in pit for 4 cyl.<br />

class / Driver and four (4) mechanics only allowed in pit for<br />

8 cyl. class.<br />

32.All work should be completed before entering fairgrounds.<br />

33.Minimum of eight (8) cars to establish each heat.<br />

34.Cars must be off fairground property within 24 hours after<br />

the event or they will be disposed of.<br />

35.No alcoholic beverages allowed in or outside pit area. Any<br />

participant or mechanic caught drinking before or during the<br />

event will cause that party to be disqualified.<br />

36.Officials reserve the right to refuse or accept any entry.<br />

37.In the event of any disputes/disagreements, the decisions of<br />

the organizing committee/officials shall be final and binding.

<strong>2012</strong> <strong>Comber</strong> <strong>Fair</strong> agriCultural <strong>Fair</strong> Honours<br />

Jim and Betty Wright<br />

This year, the <strong>Comber</strong> Agricultural Society would like to<br />

recognize the many contributions made to our community by<br />

Jim and Betty Wright. This husband and wife team has worked<br />

tirelessly for our fair for over 20 years. In fact, Jim who is<br />

a <strong>Comber</strong> native, has worked at the fair all his life, helping<br />

to manage the horse pull with his dad, Orville. Jim was born<br />

in 1939 to Orville and Beatrice Wright and was raised on the<br />

family farm along with his three sisters. Betty, born in 1956,<br />

is the fourth of five children raised near Cottam. Her parents,<br />

Earl and Grace Boose were dairy farmers and both Jim and<br />

Betty have remained true to their rural routes.<br />

They married in 1979 and moved to <strong>Comber</strong> where Jim<br />

farmed with his family. Their oldest son, James (Jamie) is<br />

pursuing a career in law enforcement. Kenneth, their second<br />

son works in the Tool and Die industry and farms with his<br />

wife Sarah. Kenneth and Sarah have expanded this family to<br />

include their daughter, Lillian.<br />

For as long as anyone can remember, Jim has worked at the <strong>Fair</strong>grounds from setting up to cleaning<br />

up. For her part, Betty has worked in the canning and baking department for 17 years. She joked with<br />

us about the year the lady judge got sick on a lemon meringue pie and all food judging had to stop for the<br />

night. We can laugh now, but it was pretty serious at the time!<br />

Up until thirteen years ago, the antique tractors always held a captivating spot in the parade. Jim<br />

decided to expand on this event and started the exhibit along with trophies that we still enjoy today. Before<br />

the <strong>Fair</strong> board could afford security guards, he would sleep at the grounds over night to protect the tractors<br />

himself. This event has grown to include 45 tractors and is always well attended.<br />

This farming team has not slowed down in “retirement” years. They have always had other interest<br />

– Jim has been a member of the Ploughmen Association for Essex County and Betty is a strong leader in<br />

their church, St. Andrew’s United in <strong>Comber</strong>. Betty also enjoys reading and tending her flower beds. Jim<br />

still loves farming and has turned his livelihood into his favorite hobby.<br />

Jim and Betty, the <strong>Comber</strong> Agricultural Society thanks you for your many, many years of hard<br />

work. You have established a strong work ethic and solid foundation that has allowed our <strong>Fair</strong> to flourish<br />

and continue to be a success.<br />
