2012 Comber Fair agriCultural Fair Honours
Jim and Betty Wright
This year, the Comber Agricultural Society would like to
recognize the many contributions made to our community by
Jim and Betty Wright. This husband and wife team has worked
tirelessly for our fair for over 20 years. In fact, Jim who is
a Comber native, has worked at the fair all his life, helping
to manage the horse pull with his dad, Orville. Jim was born
in 1939 to Orville and Beatrice Wright and was raised on the
family farm along with his three sisters. Betty, born in 1956,
is the fourth of five children raised near Cottam. Her parents,
Earl and Grace Boose were dairy farmers and both Jim and
Betty have remained true to their rural routes.
They married in 1979 and moved to Comber where Jim
farmed with his family. Their oldest son, James (Jamie) is
pursuing a career in law enforcement. Kenneth, their second
son works in the Tool and Die industry and farms with his
wife Sarah. Kenneth and Sarah have expanded this family to
include their daughter, Lillian.
For as long as anyone can remember, Jim has worked at the Fairgrounds from setting up to cleaning
up. For her part, Betty has worked in the canning and baking department for 17 years. She joked with
us about the year the lady judge got sick on a lemon meringue pie and all food judging had to stop for the
night. We can laugh now, but it was pretty serious at the time!
Up until thirteen years ago, the antique tractors always held a captivating spot in the parade. Jim
decided to expand on this event and started the exhibit along with trophies that we still enjoy today. Before
the Fair board could afford security guards, he would sleep at the grounds over night to protect the tractors
himself. This event has grown to include 45 tractors and is always well attended.
This farming team has not slowed down in “retirement” years. They have always had other interest
– Jim has been a member of the Ploughmen Association for Essex County and Betty is a strong leader in
their church, St. Andrew’s United in Comber. Betty also enjoys reading and tending her flower beds. Jim
still loves farming and has turned his livelihood into his favorite hobby.
Jim and Betty, the Comber Agricultural Society thanks you for your many, many years of hard
work. You have established a strong work ethic and solid foundation that has allowed our Fair to flourish
and continue to be a success.
