The Maritime Surveillance System
from Saab represents the new vision
of Maritime Surveillance for detection,
identification, monitoring and control
of the territorial sea, economic zones
(EEZ) and environmentally sensitive
areas.
The Maritime Surveillance System from Saab
deploys the powerful multi sensor tracker
(MST) for AIS and radar data. The real time
data is automatically combined with ship
data from the integrated Ship Database to
provide a high resolution Consolidated Situation
Picture, where all data and ship photos
are immediately available.
A flexible plug-in architecture provides the
means to use a wide range of sensors.
With the Record/Replay module it is possible
to record all ship movements and events,
later to be replayed as forensic evidence during
sea protest.
User Interface features
The integrated desktop manager (dMan)
handles the on-site configurable role and
view-based screen configuration, providing
the operator with fast switching between different
work tasks.

Strong support is provided for reduced
operators’ workload. This includes features
such as user defined filter sets (incl. area
filtering), user defined zoom areas, tagging
of ships with suspicious history. The Auto
Surveillance Profile concept further reduces
the workload by the providing means to set
up user-defined event-triggered actions (e.g.
a ship of type X enters area B and triggers
the actions ‘save event in database’ and ‘give
alert’).
Technical Architecture
The system is built on the proven, flexible
and scalable Safir TM platform used in several
Saab systems. Strong user authentication
and fine-grained role based access control is
supported.
The system is adapted to the new MARSUR
architecture to provide a regional consolidated
situation picture and extensive data
exchange.
The Ship database information is centrally
administered and updates are automatically
distributed. The Ship Database can also be
used as a stand alone tool on e.g. surveillance
ships.
A regional surveillance centre normally
comprises several operator work stations, redundancy
switched servers, communication
and sensor gateways, but the system can also
be used on a single stand alone computer.

The new Maritime Surveillance System for the
Swedish navy is installed in the five Regional command
centres in Sweden. The new Swedish costal
radar system provides all centres with data from
any part of the Swedish coast. Data is exchanged
with e.g. the Finnish counterpart (SucFiS) and the
Swedish coast Guard.
