Phillis Wheatley, Boston Women’s Memorial by Meredith Bergmann, 2003.
Cover Story
External, legal freedom was denied to Phillis Wheatley.
But she sought the inner freedom that enabled her to
write and here she makes her pedestal a desk. Within her
pose in sculptor’s language read her struggle, indirectness,
concentration. Read her words: “intrinsic ardor” fueled
their climb up to the light she loved to praise. Her words,
her letters grow on us because democracy requires that we
continue shining light upon our past mistakes, especially the
sin of slavery. Her triumph is the freedom that she found and
recognized within herself.
Alone Together:
Why We Expect More From Technology
And Less From Each Other
An Evening with Dr. Sherry Turkle
Thursday, April 12, 2012 • 7:00-8:30 pm
Lexington Depot, 13 Depot Square, Lexington • $ 10
Technology promises to let us do anything from
anywhere with anyone. But it also drains us as we
try to do everything everywhere. We begin to feel
overwhelmed and depleted by the lives technology
makes possible. We may be free to work from
anywhere, but we are also prone to being lonely
everywhere. In a surprising twist, relentless connection
leads to a new solitude. We turn to new technology
to fill the void, but as technology ramps up, our emotional lives ramp down.
Alone Together is the result of MIT technology and society specialist Sherry
Turkle’s nearly fifteen-year exploration of our lives on the digital terrain.
Based on interviews with hundreds of children and adults, it describes new,
unsettling relationships between friends, lovers, parents, and children, and
new instabilities in how we understand privacy and community, intimacy and
solitude. It is a story of emotional dislocation, of risks taken unknowingly. But
it is also a story of hope, for even in the places where digital saturation is
greatest, there are people—especially the young—who are asking the hard
questions about costs, about checks and balances, about returning to what is
most sustaining about direct human connection. At the threshold of what Turkle
calls “the robotic moment,” our devices prompt us to recall that we have human
purposes and, perhaps, to rediscover what they are.
The Forever Fix: Gene Therapy
and the Boy Who Saved It
An Evening with Ricki Lewis
Thursday, April 26, 2012 • 7:00-8:30 pm
Lexington Depot, 13 Depot Square, Lexington • $ 10
On a bright September day in 2008, 8-year-old Corey
Haas went to the Philadelphia zoo with his parents, and
screamed. Four days earlier he had undergone gene therapy
to cure his hereditary blindness, and now the sun was
hurting his eyes. The Forever Fix tells Corey’s inspiring story
against the backdrop of other children treated since the
field was born in 1990, and those looking ahead to future
gene therapy. The treatments pioneered on the children’s
rare diseases will reverberate to many more common illnesses.
Ricki Lewis grew up in New York City, earned her PhD in genetics from Indiana
University, and has built an eclectic career in communicating science, through
magazine articles, public lectures, and a string of popular college textbooks. Dr.
Lewis is the author of Human Genetics: Concepts and Applications, currently
in its 10th edition and used worldwide; co-author of two human anatomy and
physiology textbooks; and founding author of the introductory textbook Life.
She is author of Discovery: Windows on the Life Sciences, and the novel Stem
Cell Symphony, about using rock music to activate stem cells in the brain to
cure disease. She is currently a genetic counselor at CareNet Medical Group in
Schenectady, NY and teaches Genetics online for the master’s program at the
Alden March Bioethics Institute of Albany Medical College.
Lexington Community
Education presents (continued)
The Nature of Boys
with Dr. Michael Thompson,
author of Raising Cain
Wednesday, May 16, 2012 • 7:00-9:00 pm
Lexington Depot, 13 Depot Square, Lexington • $ 10
What’s the matter with my son?” Why is he an underachiever
in school?” Why are boys so violent?” “Why
won’t boys talk to adults?” Educators and parents in
the United States are engaged in an important debate
about the way we raise and educate boys. After twenty
years of illuminating research on girls and debate about
gender equity in schools, it is time to consider some of
the risk factors that afflict the lives of boys. They are
four times more likely than girls to be sent to a school psychologist; they are
diagnosed with 60-80% of learning disorders. Their areas of strength, physical
activity and visual-spatial perception, are not as important as verbal skills in the
feminine, quiet, word-dominated environment of schools. Boys do not do as well
in school as girls, from elementary school through college and they are at risk for
concluding that schools don’t work for them and becoming withdrawn and bitter.
In early adolescence most boys begin to attach their sense of status to mastery
and achievement. They are subjected to a powerful “cullture of cruelty” which
may require boys to adhere to a narrow ideology of masculinity: avoidance of
feeling, avoidance of anything feminine, fear of personal weakness. The result
may be a boy who is or appears closed and often angry. In this talk, Dr. Thompson
gives suggestions to teachers, fathers and mothers about how to support a
boy in the early years of school and how to help a boy remain emotionally open
in adolescence.
What Color Are Your Work Boots?
A Performance by Laura LaPointe
Friday, May 18, 2012 • 7:00-8:30 pm
Follen Church Society, 755 Massachusetts Avenue, Lexington • $ 10
All she wants to do is find some meaningful work
and pay the bills. After years of endless interviews,
failed attempts at “real” jobs, and absurd experiences
in short-lived unexpected employment situations,
she’s still searching but just may have discovered
something more valuable than a steady paycheck. Join
Laura Lapointe on a poignant, earnest, playful artistic
exploration of how there may be a lot more to finding good work than finding a
good job. Anyone who has ever been unemployed, under-employed or unhappily
employed will relate to familiar moments that reveal how amazing it is that
any of us actually negotiate and/or succeed within this sometimes ridiculous
process called a career. From the pangs of perceived inadequacy to the promise
of hard-won perspective, Laura exposes the inner experiences of one in the
job search trenches. You just might leave feeling refreshed and ready to put on
your own work boots and set out on your unique purposeful path, regardless of
what your job is or isn’t. A former student of retired LHS drama teacher Steven
Bogart, Laura holds a BFA in Acting from NYU, a Master of Divinity from Andover
Newton Theological School, and several other items and experiences of dubious
meaning and worth. In one year she went on 40 job interviews and ended up
working in a prison. Question and answer session to follow the performance.

Chasing Venus:
An Evening with author Andrea Wulf
Tuesday, May 29, 2012 • 7:30 pm
Lexington Depot, 13 Depot Square • Free, pre-registration is not required
In her latest book, Chasing Venus, Andrea Wulf tells
the extraordinary story of the first global scientific
collaboration, set amid warring armies, hurricanes,
scientific endeavor and personal tragedy. On 6 June
1761 and 3 June 1769 the planet Venus passed between
Earth and Sun – each time visible as a small black dot
against the burning face of the Sun for six hours. Transits
of Venus always arrive in pairs – eight years apart – but
then it takes more than a century before they are seen again. In the 1760s the
world’s scientific community was electrified because the transit would allow
them for the first time to calculate the distance between the planets in our solar
system. This would require triangulated data to be compiled from various exact
points dotted all around the four corners of the globe – all taken simultaneously
during the short period of the actual Transit. Hundreds of astronomers from
European countries and the North American colonies were dispatched across
the world to observe the rare celestial encounter. At a time when war was
tearing Europe and much of the rest of the world apart, they overcame political,
geographical and intellectual boundaries. Chasing Venus is told as a race
across the world. Rich with tales of obsession, and featuring pirates, plagues,
astronomers and scientists including Catherine the Great and Benjamin
Franklin, the book bursts with action, wonderful detail and scientific excitement,
revealing the spirit of the Enlightenment and man’s quest to understand the
world. Andrea Wulf trained as a design historian at the Royal College of Art
in London before becoming a full-time writer. She is the author of three books
and has written for the Sunday Times, Wall Street Journal, Financial Times, and
LA Times. She writes reviews for The Guardian, New York Times Sunday Book
Review, Times Literary Supplement and the Mail on Sunday.
Desert Roots:
Journey of an Immigrant Family
An Evening with Mitra Shavarini
Thursday, June 14, 2012 • 7:00-8:30 pm
Lexington Depot, 13 Depot Square, Lexington
Free, but pre-registration is recommended
Written with honesty and elegance, Shavarini has woven
an attractive tapestry of the lives of her extended family
within the context of Iranian history and culture, itself
having gone through its story of upheavals and separation.
– Shahla Haeri, Boston University
Mitra K. Shavarini is a lecturer in Peace, Conflict, and
Coexistence Studies and Women’s and Gender Studies at
Brandeis University. Her research focuses on women’s education in Muslim societies.
Her work has appeared in Harvard Educational Review, Teacher’s College
Record, International Journal of Middle East Studies, and Women’s Studies International
Forum. Shavarini is the author of Educating Immigrants: Experiences
of Second Generation Iranians (2004) and the coauthor of Women and Education
in Iran and Afghanistan: An Annotated Bibliography (with Wendy R. Robison,
2005). Her latest book, Desert Roots, was a personal writing project for Mitra.
She first began writing it as a journal-like entry for her children. She wanted to
capture some of her thoughts and emotions about her parents’ desire to return
to their homeland, Iran. She thought, “Maybe one day Neemah or Donya will ask
what brought their family to America. Wouldn’t it be a shame if I fail to tell them
what we went through?” With that impetus, her family stories poured out on
paper. Soon after, some friends encouraged her to consider writing for a broader
audience ...that, in a nutshell, is how Desert Roots came to be.
Walt Whitman
Instructor: Stephen Collins
This lively six week seminar will
delve deeply into the life and work
of American’s beloved poet Walt
Whitman. The impact of his writing
is still felt today. Whitman found
inspiration in the everyday life of
America; he saw and wrote of “a
teeming nation of nations”. He wanted
to help Americans understand their
past, experience their present, and
anticipate their future. “The United
States themselves are essentially
the greatest poem,” he said, adding,
“Past and present and future are not
disjoined but joined.” The first class
will focus not only on a biographical
sketch of his life, but also a discussion
concerning the major forces that
influenced him. Whitman wrote, “The
greatest poet forms the consistence of
what is to be from what has been and
is. We will study a number of smaller
poems, including “A Noiseless Patient
Spider” and “Miracles”. We will also
study “Crossing Brooklyn Ferry”, “Out
of the Cradle Endlessly Rocking”, and
look at large portions of “Songs of
Myself”. At least one class will be
devoted to the Civil War Poems from
Drum Taps. If students wish to read a
biography, Walt Whitman, a Cultural
Biography by David S. Reynolds is
recommended.
Whether you have read Pride and
and appreciate how her characters
struggle with obstacles in love.
in regard to family, romance and
marriage. Our focus, however, will
be on reading and discussing Pride
and Prejudice, as well as viewing
several of the film versions. We
will pay special attention to how
the main characters, Elizabeth and
A Mythological Look At
How the World Began
Instructor: Dr. Michael Fiveash
The capacity to imagine the
beginning of the world gave ancient
cultures the occasion – in myth and
ritual – both to celebrate the sacred
past and to (re)forge powerful (and
sometimes dangerous) connections
with it. In this class we will explore
three mythical accounts of origins
and beginnings: the start of human
history in the Epic of Gilgamesh,
the first return of a young god to
the land of his birth, in the Bacchae
of Euripides, and the origins of
human civilization in the gift of a
rebellious divinity in the Prometheus
of Aeschylus. We will also sample
some comparative material drawn
from the cultures of the ancient Near
East and native North America.
We will examine their historic
context, and determine their origins.
There will also be a sprinkling of
Opera Previews
Instructor: David Collins
This spring the Metropolitan
Opera is presenting two HD
opera presentations, Manon by
Jules Massenet and La Traviata
by Giuseppe Verdi. Both operas
deal with a courtesan’s desire for
true love. Manon traces the life
of a young, exuberant girl who
finds honest love as she dies.
Massenet weaves a magical spell
of melodious music with colorfully
drawn characters. Verdi, in La
Traviata, presents a real human
character who suffers for her lover’s
Poetry Writing Workshop
Instructor: Tom Daley
Poetry is not only dream and vision;
it is the skeleton architecture of our
Self-Publishing and Promoting
Your Book Using Social Media
Instructor: Jack B. Rochester
Self-publishing offers writers more
and better opportunities than
traditional publishing: faster into print,
higher royalties, and no rejection
letters. Today, agents and publishers
often read successful self-published
books to find the next blockbuster. The
Introductory Workshop is intended
to help authors understand the selfpublishing
process and how to use
social media to promote their book.
Participants will learn about options
from small presses to e-books, the
importance of Amazon, why you
must promote your book, strategies
for getting your book into stores, and
how to use social media for marketing
and promotion. The Advanced
Workshop will delve more deeply
into manuscript preparation for self,
or independent publishing and how to
market and promote after publication.
This workshop will cover the three
types of editing your manuscript
must have, what to do to prepare
your manuscript for publishing
(and what you should expect the
publisher to do), how to choose the
best independent publisher, further
promotional strategies, and what you
can expect from your book publishing
experience.
Fundamentals of Drawing
Instructor: Peter Hines
It’s not necessary to travel to exotic
places or pick an unusual subject
to create art that is fresh and new.
Exciting art can be created almost
anywhere, and inspired by almost
any subject, through overcoming the
visual prejudices we have developed
that make many things we see every
day almost invisible. In this drawing
class for beginning and intermediate
students, we will emphasize
observation and description of items
that are present in our own homes
and our neighborhood. We will
consider issues including form and
line, shading and shadows, shape
and proportion, and composition and
perspective. Students will receive
individual attention in a relaxed and
friendly setting. Please call LCE for
Beginning Korean
Instructor: Yong-Min Kwak, Ph.D
The class is to learn Korean
(Hangeul) that was invented 500
years ago and has only been used
for 100 years. Hangeul is made of
phonetic letters just like English.
However, unlike English, each
syllable that is composed of a word
is made of exactly one consonant
and one vowel with/without
additional consonant. Hangeul,
composed of 19 consonants and 21
vowels, can depict any sound with
one of 21 vowels. Therefore, any
vowel written will be pronounced
the same sound regardless whoever
reads it. This class is designed for
students who want to learn Korean
characters, pronunciation, vocabulary
and basic grammar. Specifically,
Korean grammar will be taught
while being compared to that of
English. Also, students will have
an opportunity to learn Korean’s
Confucianism culture (etiquette)
through Korean verb inflection.
fiendish teenage look-alike? Do you
feel like you have been left to live
with a stubborn stranger who is
nearly impossible to talk and relate
to? While we all know that the
process of teenage individuation
isn’t easy, communication and
compromise is an essential key to
healthy family living and can be
accomplished even with difficult
teens. In this class you will explore
the art of negotiation and learn
ways to convey your interests and
positions with bargaining power. By
the end of the class you will be on
your way to living beyond demands,
and creating, evaluating, and
choosing the best options for win/
Preserving The Past
Before It’s Too Late
Instructor: Philip Hermann
Technology is quickly changing the
way we preserve our family records.
The audio, video and photographic
records of the past are quickly
being replaced by digital recordings
and images. Now is the time to
look at your ancestral records to
determine what is valuable for
future generations. We all have
family treasures that are stored
improperly and are constantly being
attack by chemical, physical and
biological factors. This workshop
will look at family records in terms
of technology, storage, and making
digital reproduction. Come for two
hours so that nothing of your history
Estate Planning for Parents
Instructor: Shani Rea Collymore
Parents of young children need a will
more than anyone else, but are least
likely to have one. It is important to
protect minor children by appointing
a guardian of your choice, not one
chosen by the Probate Court, and to
protect your children’s inheritance
by creating a trust for their benefit.
This class will provide an overview
of estate planning and probate
administration in Massachusetts,
including the pitfalls of not having a
will. Learn about various estateplanning
vehicles such as health care
proxies, durable powers of attorney,
living wills, wills, pour-over wills,
and various trusts.
ETFs: Diversifying your Portfolio
at a Low Cost
Instructor: George Gagliardi
Exchange Traded Funds, known as
ETFs, have been around since 1989,
but it has only been recently that
they have attracted the attention
of the average investor. With over
1,000 different ETFs available and
nearly $1 trillion in assets, ETFs are
clearly an investment option that is
now a mainstream alternative for
investors who traditionally invested
primarily in mutual funds and index
funds. However, there is a broad
range of differences among ETFs,
and it is important to understand
them before investing in them.
We will go over the differences
between ETFs and mutual funds, the
characteristics of ETFs, the various
types of ETFs available, and which
ones are appropriate for different
investing styles and objectives.
Financial Life Planning for
What Really Matters
Instructor: Peter Hoffman, CFP
Many of us know that we need a
financial plan, but where do we
begin? Surprisingly, the answer is
not with our finances! The answer
begins with our personal notions and
dreams of freedom, what a life filled
with security and satisfaction means
to us. A financial plan focused on
achieving personal freedom is full
of energy, excitement, and a strong
will to implement and achieve. But,
before building (or re-building) our
financial plan we must first discover
- or re-discover - the life we are
passionate about. Through lecture,
exercises and discussion we will
look at ways to merge life longings
with a financial plan and gain tips to
avoid pitfalls along the way.
Avoiding Caregiver Burnout:
Living More Fully While
Caregiving
Instructor: Paula Solomon
Trying to balance caregiving for
a loved one with caring for other
family members, self-care and/or
career demands? Trying to be patient
and enjoy your time with your loved
one but just hurrying to “get things
done”? In this class, taught by a
former elder care resource specialist
who was both a long-distance
and local caregiver for more than
ten years, you will look at options
for creating a new paradigm for
caregivers. By finding individualized
ways to balance self-care with
caregiving, you can be a better
caregiver for the long run. Improving
your ability to find this balance can
enable you to be with your loved
one with a “full heart”, rather than
with the “half-hearted” struggle
to just get tasks done that is often
the result of physical and emotional
depletion.
Meditation can reduce stress and
boost energy and is a surprisingly
easy skill to learn. Come join us for
this one- night workshop to learn
the basics of meditation. With a
little practice, you will discover that
meditation can help you manage the
stress in your life, and increase your
overall sense of well-being. Please
note; any alcohol consumption prior
to class will significantly reduce the
effectiveness of these techniques.
Dr. Susan McCombs is a boardcertified
clinical hypnotherapist.
meditation practices of Vietnamese
Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh, you’ll
learn ways to slow down, relax
the body, calm the mind, focus the
attention, listen deeply, and cultivate
love and compassion. The sessions
will include meditation practices,
personal sharing, and basic
teachings of the Buddha. Instructor
is an ordained dharma teacher in the
tradition of Thich Nhat Hanh. Thich
Nhat Hanh, Essential Writings is a
Practical Shamanism
101 and 102
Instructor: Julie Hannon
Shamans believe that a luminous
energy field surrounds the physical
body, and which holds a record of
all our emotional, physical, and
spiritual trauma. The luminous
energy field is a blueprint that
determines how we will heal, how
we will live and how we might die.
In Shamanism101, we will discuss
the healing practices employed for
10,000 years by the Shamans of the
Americas. The ancient practices
are presented in a scientific and
practical system of energy healing
that allows us to discover states of
exceptional health and well-being,
as well the opportunity for conscious
participation in our future evolution.
In Shamanism 102 we will explore
the topic of journeying, and how
shamans use journeying to work with
the invisible/non-ordinary reality.
You will be introduced to the basic
concepts of journeying and have
an opportunity to go on a guided
journey. People with no journeying
experience are more than welcome!
It is suggested that you take
Practical Shamanism prior to taking
Instructor: Virginia Payne
Originally one of the ancient Chinese
martial arts, Tai Chi is practiced
today by students primarily as a
method of exercise that cultivates
physical and mental harmony in
movements. Scientific studies
show that Tai Chi improves and
possibly prevents chronic conditions
such as arthritis, heart disease
and diabetes (Tai Chi is reported
to ease Fibromyalgia according
to a study published in The New
England Journal of Medicine). In
fact, practicing Tai Chi regularly
helps reduce stress, improve
balance, improve coordination
and strengthens immune systems,
and develop body awareness and
Pilates, our Exercise and Dance classes provide many low-impact, affordable,
and fun ways to help you get in shape and stay that way.
Aikido for Beginning and
Continuing Students
Instructor: Ted Goodman
Aikido is a uniquely non-aggressive
martial art that teaches practical
self-defense without the need to
punch, kick or attack. It also holds
the distinction of being the only
martial art prerequisite for the Tokyo
Metropolitan Police Department.
Through its beautifully circular flow,
Aikido blends with and redirects
the momentum of an attack to
defeat the attacker. (If you push, I
pull. If you pull, I push.) See why
“a grab is a gift” and feel the
power of its takedowns, throws
and immobilizations. Besides the
physical benefits of relaxed stretches
and fluid movements, Psychological
Aikido’s non-confrontational
approach to conflict resolution is
an extra reward in sidestepping
the stress and strain of daily life
in the office, behind the wheel and
at home. Practices are conducted
in pairs as partners (never as
opponents) and always at your own
pace. Karate or judo uniforms are
appropriate but any loose clothing
can be worn in class.
