Fully initiated Catholics are always needed to serve as sponsors for
Third Sunday of Lent
March 11, 2012
I, the LORD, am your God . . .
You shall not have other gods besides me.
— Exodus 20:2a, 3
PASTOR’S CORNER
Dear Parish Family,
This weekend, the Church universal
celebrates the first of three Scrutinies
over the Elect who are approaching
their full initiation into the Catholic
Church at the Easter Vigil. Through
the Sacraments of Baptism,
Confirmation, and Eucharist, these
individuals will die to their former
selves and be born again into Jesus
Christ. As we celebrate with all of
them, we particularly pray for our
own Elect, Natalie Richards. For the
past year and more, Natalie has been
participating in our Christian
Initiation (RCIA) process. On the
first Sunday of Lent, she joined with
other catechumens in the diocese of
Austin (and throughout the Church),
and was declared Elect of God, ready
to be born again.
Here at St. Martin’s, we celebrate the
Scrutinies at the Saturday evening
Mass. In these Masses (third, fourth
and fifth Sundays of Lent), the
scripture readings are taken from
Year “A” of the Lectionary cycle.
For the First Scrutiny, we hear of
Jesus’ meeting with the woman at the
well. He declares to her that he is the
living water, and whoever drinks of
the water he gives will never thirst
again. In the Second Scrutiny, we
hear of Jesus healing the man born
blind. Surrendering to the love that
Jesus offers, he is able to truly see all
that this love offers. Finally, in the
Third Scrutiny, the gospel is of Jesus
raising his deceased close friend
Lazarus to new life. In Christ, all are
offered the gift of eternal life.
As we continue our own journeys
through Lent and pray with and for
Natalie (and all the Elect), let us
reflect on what it is that we thirst for
in our lives; what we long to see
more clearly in our lives; and what
and where we need new life. As we
approach our most holy days of the
liturgical year – the Paschal
Triduum – Holy Thursday, Good
Friday, and Easter – let us
strengthen our desire to live in the
new life that we have been given in
our own Baptism. Let us resolve to
recommit ourselves to the promises
made when we were joined to God’s
great covenant of love for us. Let us
not be discouraged, but be confident
in the great wonder of our salvation
in Christ.
*********************
A special Thank You to Father
Charlie Van Winkle, C.S.C. for
leading our community in our
Lenten Mission this past week. I am
grateful for his devotion and desire
to share the love of Christ with us. I
also thank him for allowing me the
opportunity to celebrate my Aunt
Tillie’s 95 th birthday in our
hometown of Johnstown, PA. She
was very happy for the impromptu
celebration, and we all had a
wonderful time.
God bless you, always, and in all
ways.
Father Ed
Word of Life Series
This is the fundamental question that
must be asked: who is man? Man is a
being who bears within his heart a thirst
for the infinite, a thirst for truth – a truth
which is not partial but capable of
explaining life’s meaning – since he was
created in the image and likeness of God.
The grateful recognition that life is an
inestimable gift, then, leads to the
discovery of one’s own profound dignity
and the inviolability of every single
person. Hence the first step in education
is learning to recognize the Creator’s
image in man, and consequently learning
to have a profound respect for every
human being and helping others to
live a life consonant with this supreme
dignity.
~Pope Benedict XVI, Message for the
World Day of Peace, January 1, 2012
“Human Dignity at the End of Life”
is the theme for the March 23-24
Converging Roads conference in
San Antonio, jointly sponsored by
Assumption Seminary, CHRISTUS Santa
Rosa Health System, and HLI America.
This event will feature Archbishop
Gustavo Garcia-Siller, Dr. Janet Smith,
and several other distinguished speakers.
Participants will be better prepared to
care for persons at the end of life by
recognizing their dignity as persons;
understanding their unique spiritual,
emotional, physical, and legal needs as
patients; examining and responding to
ethical issues in their treatment; and
becoming aware of resources which can
offer comfort at the end of life.
Continuing education credit is available
for physicians, nurses, catechists, and
other licensed professionals. Learn more
about this important event and register at
www.ConvergingRoads.com or call the
seminary at (210) 734-5137.
