Sahara-Sahel - 52 -
INTRODUCTION
The Sahara comprises one third of the surface of Africa and is currently
expanding southwards. 1t is defined on climatic criteria, being conventionally
delimited by the 100 mm isohyet, and is hyper-arid. Differences appear, however,
through this wide plateau, from which six mountain massifs emerge, grouped in
the centre and to the south (the Ahaggar, with adjacent Tedfeset, Maydir, Ahnet,
and the deeply eroded plateau of Tassili-n-Ajjer, the Adrar-des-Aforhas, the
Aïr, the Tibesti, the Ennedi, and the coastal Red Sea Hills) . The Djebel Marra
(Darfur) is on the margin of the region. These mountains are much more humid
than the western and eastern plateaux. The Western Atlantic toast also receives
more rainfall than the eastern zones while the extreme south is influenced by
the summer monsoon.
During the late Quaternary, the Sahara experienced enormous climatic changes.
During the wet episodes, wide freshwater lakes and swamps expanded
longitudinally throughout, but have now shrunk back to residual salt lakes,
desiccated playas, saline chotts, or isolated spring or rainwater-fed rockpools
in mountain areas. Most of the gueltas are situated upstresm of rivers which
flow only occasionally, but torrentially, e.g. the Oued Tafassasset which opens
into Lake Chad; the Oueds Tamanrasset and Azouek, tributaries of the Niger, and
the Oued Kya which reaches the Nediterranean Sea. In such a desertic context,
lakes now mainly occur in depressions fed by groundwater over geographically
widely separated areas.
Pive types of inland waters cari be distinguished:
1. Large permanent saline lakes in depressions where groundwater seeps in and
continuously compensates for evaporation.
2. Semi-permanent and seasonal saline lakes, fed intermittently by groundwater,
precipitation or runoff. A special case is the endorheic endpoints of rivers,
such as the Oued Saoura (now dammed), draining water from the Atlas Wountains
into the terminal sebkhas Nekerrhane and Azzel-Uatti.
3. Permanent or ephemeral stagnant Ereshwaters (guelta, aguelman), small to very
small , spring- or rainwater-Eed lakelets. situated in well-shaded mountain
environments. Typical gueltas are situated in canyons often at the foot of a
former waterfall where the riverbed was deeply excavated during periods of
active flow.
4. Relict rivers: apart from the Oued Saoura, desert rivers are intermittent and
torrential. The Saoura becomes progressively more saline downstream before it
disappears in its floodplain. In its lower reaches, it forms a string of
pools, thus bridging the gap to types 2 and 3. There are two more short,
desert rivers (oued Imirhou, Tassili-n-Ajjer; Chor Arbaat, Red Sea Hills),
with a more or less similar behaviour. In dry oueds with an active underflow,
a fracture zone across the bed may make the groundwater reappear at the
surface as a series OF Springs or a waterPal1, producing running water over a
distance of a few hundred metres. Many permanent gueltas are provided with
water in the same way.
5. Rphemeral waters : in any depression (on a plain, a plateau, or in an
interdunal situation) erratic rains produce more or less short-lived stagnant
waters. ïn the south, and as rainfall becomes more dependable, these pans are
larger and longer-lived and are called marigots.
Due to the vast spread OP these water body types, this chapter has not been
subdivided and has been treated as one unit.

INTRODUCTION
occasionnelles peuvent provoquer l'accumulation d'eau stagnante temporaire.
sections.
