News from your Shropshire Councillor
Claire Wild
Dear Resident,
The Local Plan Review Consultation date has been extended to the 8th
February. I would encourage everyone to take part in this consultation, it
can be found on the Shropshire Council website or by following this link:
https://www.shropshire.gov.uk/get-involved/local-plan-review-preferred-sites-consultation
Following the special meeting in December and the Parish Council meeting in January the
Parish Council agreed to challenge the points allocated to Cross Houses which currently gives
it Hub status (53 points). In reality these points are unlikely to reduce to less than 48 points
so it is likely that Cross Houses will have to accept some further development. Whilst this is
disappointing, the Parish Council agreed with Shropshire Council’s choice of site, the Old
Station (Station Cattery), as this gave us the least development by some margin. We will have
an opportunity for further consultation later in the year.
The Reverend Sarah Hare attended the January meeting of the Parish Council to inform us
that it is likely Berrington Church will close in June and that the future of St Margaret’s in
Betton will be discussed later in the year. The Parish Council resolved to write to the Church
Commissioners to urge them to give the church to the Historic Churches Trust so that the
fabric of the building and artefacts would continue to be cared for. The churchyard is likely to
remain open but managed by the local authority.
As you maybe aware there is agreement to formulate a Community Led Plan for the Parish.
This is an opportunity for you all to shape the future of our Parish. Come and tell us what you
want, what you like, what you don’t like, what could be improved etc. etc. A drop in Launch
Event has been arranged for Saturday 2nd February 11am - 2pm at the Chapel Community
Centre, further information is available on page 7. I’m told there will be tea and cake! Hope to
see you there ☺
Best wishes and kind regards,
COMMUNITY LED PLAN - LAUNCH EVENT
Your chance to make a Community Led Plan and deliver it!
A community led plan can help identify local issues that are important to residents and improve our parish
through community action. Preparing a community led plan allows everyone in the community to come
together and participate in and influence what happens in our parish.
Members of the Parish can come along to Community Led Plan meetings and take charge. You do not need
to have any experience, or particular skills – just an opinion, and a desire to give people in our Parish a say in
the future of our area.
Our Drop-In Launch event will be held on Saturday
News from Christ Church C.E. Primary School
Learning, Listening, Living
Can you remember story time at school? If I’m honest, I have relatively few distinct memories of
primary school, bar it being a generally happy time. But I do have a very vivid memory of being read ‘The
Twits’ by Mr Workman when I was 7 – I can still picture my place in the class and remember the joy of how
horrible he made Mr and Mrs Twit! There are a lot of pressures on primary schools at the moment –schools
are expected (most often rightly) to tackle all manner of wider issues in society – e-safety, obesity, fitness,
mental health etc. as well as teach a much wider and deeper curriculum, following recent Government
reforms. One area that research shows has been impacted is that fewer teachers are reading every day to
their class, as they are struggling to fit more things in. We are trying to buck this trend and keep that
traditional pattern of reading every day to all children, whether they are Reception or Year 6. Recent books
have been a favourite from Roald Dahl – George’s Marvellous Medicine, Wonder by RJ Palacio (which was
also a film with Julia Roberts you may have seen about facial disfigurement) and another classis - CS Lewis’
The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.
If you have a child or grandchild you will know how lovely it is to
share a book with them – and you might also be interested in the
latest research which suggests that children who are regularly read to
out loud have an understanding of language which is on average eight
months ahead of others. So keep on sharing those books!
This half term we have some exciting curriculum themes:
Red Class: Year R and Year 1 – Dinosaur Detectives
Dinosaur Detectives is our topic and we have our own fossil digging ground in the classroom as well as going
fossil hunting at Shrewsbury Museum.
Green Class: Year 2 and Year 3 - Birds
We are joining in RSPB ‘Big Schools’ Bird Watch’ and have our own bird watching area set up – we are getting
through lots of seeds and fat balls!
Yellow Class: Year 4, Year 5 and Year 6 – Location, Location, Location
Many of us are going to Arthog residential centre and we are looking forward to comparing Snowdonia to
our local area. We can’t wait to try gorge walking and canoeing! We are also looking at mountains and
mountain ranges across Europe and are enjoying a Geography themed half term.
Remember we are the catchment school for many villages: Cressage, Cross Houses, Harley, Cound,
Coundmoor and Sheinton but we also have children attending from further afield. We work closely with
Childrensworld UK who are onsite and offer an “Outstanding” (Ofsted) nursery and wrap-around childcare
for before/after school and the holidays. They are open 8am until 6pm. Ring the office for more details on
01952 510383. I would love to show you around – you don’t need to wait for an ‘Open Morning’.
The Reverend Sarah Hare writes
Dear Friends
It was wonderful to be part of the Carol Services at both
Betton Strange and Berrington over the Christmas season.
Both churches were full and we had a wonderful celebration for both communities as we told
again the story of the birth of Jesus – God’s Son who came to earth for us. Thank you to all
those who cleaned and set up the churches, played, sang and read and those who provided
refreshments for us to share. Both services were a real joy and I would also like to thank my
colleague Rev Phillip Bytheway who I share ministry with in this Parish.
During December following discussions at PCC (Parochial Church Council), with sadness we
asked Hereford Diocese to start the process towards closure of All Saint’s Church, Berrington.
We are now in the first round of the formal process of consultation which will end in the
middle of February and we then move into a further round following this. I have spoken to
our local Parish Council to inform them of what is happening at present with this and we wait
to see what the outcome will be of these consultations. We know that any change with All
Saint’s, Berrington will impact St Margaret’s Church Betton Strange but at present, the
process is focusing on All Saint’s Church, Berrington and we will take this one step at a time.
As we go through this process, I will do my best to keep people informed of what is
happening, to answer the questions that you have and to tell you what the outcomes may be,
however there are many ifs and buts at the moment and I honestly do not know what the
outcome may be.
Bishop Alistair Magowan (Bishop of Ludlow) will be coming to lead a service at All Saint’s
Church, Berrington on Sunday 10 th March at 11am to offer pastoral support as we go through
this process. All are invited to this service and there will be refreshments following the
service to give an opportunity for conversation with Bishop Alistair.
Please be assured of both mine and Rev Matthew’s prayers as we continue to discern what is
best for our Parish at this time and if you have concerns, then please do contact me to discuss
these.
With every blessing
Week of Accompanied Prayer – 24 th – 30 th March 2019
In March 2019 the week of accompanied prayer creates an
opportunity for us to think about our prayer lives, whether this
feels healthy or we struggle with knowing how to talk and
listen to God. We have individuals who are called prayer
guides who come from outside of our team who come and
spend the week in The Wenlock Team of Parishes. There will
be opportunities to meet with your guide in complete
confidence for a short time of half an hour each day. We need
to finalise numbers for this by the end of February so if you
would like to know more or to register to take part in this
week, please speak to Rev Sarah or Rev Matthew 01952
