July 2016
@OasisCoulsdon
As I reflect and look back over the term, I
cannot believe just what we have managed to
accomplish. To say it has been busy is an
understatement! As you read through the newsletter,
you will see just what an amazing team of staff we have to
make this all possible. I have been delighted to see how
Year 11 have approached their final examinations. Starting
their academy day as early as 7am for their teacher-led revision
in the Diner and then leaving the Academy after 5pm. What has
been noticeable is the impact this has had on the habits for
examination preparation for younger students as they prepare for the
end of year examinations. We trust the Year 11 students’ hard work
will result in some impressive Academy results in what is the first
year of new government standards of reporting.
It is a year ago that our Academy House system was launched. This
has had a significant impact on life at the Academy all through the
year. The House Leaders have worked tirelessly with the students
encouraging them through a myriad of competitions finishing just last
Thursday with Sports Day. The final totals for the year have now
been added up and I am delighted to congratulate Owens House as
their first cup winners.
Oasis’s Got Talent proved to be a fitting end to the year last week with students displaying a variety
of talents in an action packed show. I am delighted to congratulate Alfie Earl-Day in Year, who after
entering every year he has been at the Academy and coming in as a close runner up on multiple
occasions, was finally crowned this year’s winner… the true embodiment of perseverance.
Friday 1st July was a particularly special day. We welcomed a full Year 7 cohort at our induction day and
we are now fully over-subscribed, which is excellent news for the local community and fulfils a promise we
made to be a school of local choice. The day was a great success and an opportunity to meet the students
before they start in September. In the evening many staff celebrated with Year 11 at their prom. They are
always great occasions but this one was made a little more poignant as it was Mrs Patel’s last Year 11
Family Group. She is retiring from the Family Leader role but I am delighted that she will still be a member
of the teaching staff in the Mathematics faculty. I would like to thank her for her many years of
outstanding service as a Family Leader.
As I reflect on that day, it made me think about the journeys that students and staff are on and that we
need to make the most of the opportunities we are presented with. So I hope that as we finish this
academic year, we will make the most of the summer holiday period and look forward to a great new start
to the academic year ahead. My thoughts will be with Year 11 and I look forward to meeting with them in
mid-August when the results are published - I do hope that they will be a true reflection of their hard work
commitment and dedication. I am also looking forward to seeing the students arrive in September with the
passion to make this Academy an even better place in the year to come.
A Booth
Principal

This year Mrs Richardson
and Ms Killeen were very
impressed by the standard
and of the acts. We hope
that all the contestants will
be proud of their
achievements and enjoyed
the evening.
Congratulations to
Intergalactic 3 rd place,
Hannah and Savhanna 2 nd
place, and Alfie Earl Day 1 st !
We look forward to next
year and hope students start
to consider their acts and
wish for there to be even
greater variety; Music
(singing, Bands, instrument,
Beat-Box) Drama, Dance
(ballet, tap, street/hip-hop
etc.) Magic, Stand-up... any
Talent at all. Auditions to be
announced next year 2017!
This half term students performed
random acts of kindness in
Croydon. They worked during their
own time over a weekend to pick
up litter, opening doors for people,
greeting people and handing out
sweets. You can tell they really do
care about the community and
want to change the
representations of youth, not
wishing to be defined by the
minority who let their peers down.
Well done to all who took part, we
are very proud of you.
Stacey Clark, Youth Worker

Year 10 News… Mr Martin reports
Another school year has drawn to a close and what a year it has been. Year 10 have risen to the top of the
Academy and are ready for their final year. This time next year it will all be over bar results day in August.
This term has seen the Prefects settling into their new roles led by the Eloise Robertson and Dwayne Tyndale the
Head Girl and Boy. The prefects have made a very positive contribution to the running of the Academy helping out
with open days and hosting an Educational conference event at the Academy, even getting to meet the then
Secretary of State for Education, Nicky Morgan!
By the time you read this Year 10 will have completed their work experience and I am happy to say that we have
some very interesting and challenging placements this year. Hopefully this short taste of the world of work will have
helped focus minds on future careers.
As the term has drawn to a close, Year 10 have sat some real and some mock
exams getting them ready for next year. As much as it is important for the students
to have a break please don’t let the six weeks pass without a little time completing
subject work online . BBC bitesize is an excellent resource just to help keep minds
focused and sharp during the break.
I wish you a relaxing holiday and I look forward to the coming year when together
we will set Year 10/11 on the right path for their futures.
Primary Visitors
Year 9 students have been helping out with visits from Year 3
Byron students this half term. This was part of the Primary
School’s Art Week and whilst at the Academy they took the
opportunity to look at the GCSE art display, with the glass
parrot and football display proving especially popular. Year 9
students then helped their younger guests with creating
create some giant surreal paintings of their own.

Name: Salysa Mason
Year group: 7
House: Churchill
Salysa has recently been setting the world of Junior Golf alight as she took the
title of SCLGA Junior Handicap Champion at the recent tournament held on 31st
May 2016 at Haywards Heath. After a two hour delay due to poor weather
conditions, Salysa went on to play 36 holes of golf and shot a net 71 in the morning and a net 69 in the
afternoon, giving her a total of 140, five clear shots ahead of the runner-up. Salysa played the
tournament off of a 14, however after this impressive performance she is now a 10.6 handicap!
“I started playing gold when I was 3 but only seriously took it up when I was 10” said Salysa “I now play
3-4 times a week and am a member of Cottesmore Club and also play for Sussex Girls Elite Squad. I
love playing gold and the best part about it is being outside and getting to meet new people. I hope
to pursue this as a career and fingers crossed I can turn my hobby into much more!”

It is incredible to think that we are approaching the summer holidays and that Year 9 is
coming to an end. Blink and you would have missed this half term as students have been
so busy in their classes and with extra-curricular activities.
This term has seen the opening again of the school shop and I am delighted that this was a
suggestion from the Year 9 Family Council. Every break we have a strong team of 20
helpers who open up the shop, stock the shelves and serve the students. I would like to say
a massive thank you to the team as day on day they selflessly take on this responsibility.
Summer term two is when our local primary schools visit the Academy for taster days.
In Technology we had two fantastic days making badges that light up. Year 9 stepped
up to the plate wanting to welcome our visitors and ensure that they had a great day. I
was very impressed with them on the day, especially their professionalism which saw
them leading the sessions after just one demonstration from me!
To see all Year 9 combine their efforts was a delight and made this year’s sports day a
very special moment. It is going to be a pleasure in the final awards assembly to
present so many medals to record breakers this year who dug deep and gave 100% on the day.
We also enjoyed a money Skills Day with Barclays Bank, students got a lot out of the session
and enjoyed their workshops.
As we approach the summer break, I would like to thank all year 9 for making this year so special
and rewarding in so many ways. I would also like to thank the mentors, parents and carers
guardians for all their support and encouragement over the year. It leaves me just to wish you all
a safe and exciting holiday and I look forward to hearing all about it in the new academic year.
Mr Calvo, Year 9 Family Leader
Academy Council News
This has been another busy and successful year at Oasis
Academy Coulsdon. Councillors have enjoyed hearing
not only about strong academic attainment but also the
wider achievements of students of all ages. Certainly, the
opportunities on offer at Oasis Academy Coulsdon are
exceptional and a cause for celebration and thanks. We
are so glad that Ofsted have recognised the excellent
effort and commitment of students, staff and parents,
which combine to make our Academy a very special
place. Of course we look forward to hearing about some
fantastic results this summer because exam success
opens doors to 6th form, to college, to apprenticeships
and to employment. First and foremost we hope that
every student feels that they have given their best to their
studies this year and, as a result, gain the grades that
they hope for.
As always at this time of the year, on behalf of the OAC
Councillors, I wish all of our readers a very well deserved
rest and enjoyable break. I would like to thank Mr Booth
and every member of staff of Oasis Academy Coulsdon
for their continued commitment and support to every
single student at OAC. I would also like to take this
opportunity to thank Academy Councillors who have
voluntarily given their time so freely in order to support
the Academy and to raise questions when necessary.
Finally, to all our readers, have a wonderful summer and
a good rest.
Sue Raynor, Chair, OAC Academy Council Chair

London Youth Games
13 students from year 10 had a fantastic opportunity to volunteer at this year’s
London Youth Games, held at Crystal Palace sports centre. The 13 students were
selected from the year group as potential sports leaders of the future and
undertook two 2 hour training sessions at the Academy with David Smith, the
Croydon schools sports co-ordinator in the Games Force training programme. The
group was split into two with some helping at the special swimming competition
and the others helping to umpire at the tennis tournament. All the students had an
amazing experience which they will never forget. Our hope is that they will go onto to volunteer at many
other sporting events in the borough and continue with their leadership training next year.
Euro 2016
Every two years the Academy holds it’s World and Euro football tournaments in line
with the official tournaments. This year the Euro 2016 tournament took on a new
look with the houses organising their own teams and representing countries. For
two weeks every lunchtime teams competed in groups and then in the knockout
stages until the final on the last Friday of the second week. Over 100 students from
across the whole Academy came to watch every lunchtime whilst others played Fifa
on the Xbox and PS3 in the internet café to raise money for charity.
The tournament saw Portugal play Wales in the final, and just like in the official tournament, Portugal won 2-1!
Croydon
Sports Day
On Thursday 7th July the first House sports day took place at the Academy! During
a fun packed day we saw 26 new year group records broken, as well as 4 whole
school records! We also crowned Keller House as the first champions of the
Academy House Sports Day, congratulations!
A special mention needs to go to Megan French who broke 5 year records in
1500m, 800m, 300m & high jump, with the high jump also being a whole school
record. Davina Boateng broke 2 year records in 100m and 200m which were also whole school records too,
and Harley Breslin-Ward who broke the whole school shot-put record.
School’s Athletics
In this year’s Athletics Championships held at Croydon sports Arena, students
competed against the best from all the schools in the borough. There were some
outstanding individual performances from Tom Porter year 8 who came 2nd in the
1500m, Tasia-Jade Bogle 1st in the year 8 discus, Jayden Davis 2nd in the year 9
discus and Harley Breslin-Ward 1st in the shot putt year 9.

Drama action...
This half term students have been taking
part in a programme run by Croydon
Youth Theatre and got the chance to
perform at the Shoestring Theatre to
productions of DNA and Chatroom.
Students had been working with their
Youth Theatre leader Craig for 6 weeks.
Students have enjoyed learning new games
and working with different people within the
school as well as outside. Croydon Youth
Theatre Organisation were very impressed at
the standard and quality of our students
performance and have been given a special invite to
attend Croydon Youth Theatre on Fridays.
Congratulations to Oliver Griffin, Year 11, for securing a place
at the Brit School in September to study BTEC Level 3
Extended Diploma in Performing Arts (Acting).
I would also like to say well done to Luke Steele
and Alfie Earl-Day, also Year 11, who a will be
appearing in ‘Hospital Food’ at the Courtyard
Theatre from 6th—10th September. Tickets can be
purchased on their website by clicking here.
Geography rocks!
Throughout both Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4,
this year in Geography has been extremely busy
and exciting! During this half term Years 7 and 8
have been undertaking work on Japan and their
culture. Year 9 students have also been working
hard; they have been learning about development
by undertaking role plays which help them to
understand why some countries in the world are
less advantaged than others which has really
stretched their creativity. Year 10 have been
focused on their final goal of GCSEs throughout
the year and have been working on rivers,
coasts, tourism and population.
No Pen Day has provided many opportunities in
Geography, including year 8 producing their very
own Urban Utopia towns based on work done in
class on settlements and urbanisation, and Year
7 designed their very own ‘Green Transport’
designed to help reduce the global energy and
environmental crisis.
I wish them all the very best of luck in his next
dramatic adventure.

Year 8 News… from Mr Cheshire
Wow – the end of another year! How time flies when you have fun and
enjoy what you are doing!! It seems amazing to think that another Year
has passed at the Academy and everyone is a year older and hopefully
wiser and more mature!
It only seems like a few weeks ago that I was staring at 160 Year 8
students eager to find out who their new mentor was for this academic
year. I have thoroughly enjoyed this year and feel privileged to be
working with such a talented bunch of individuals. However if you have
learnt anything this year it should be that talent only gets you so far…..
hard work, and a desire to improve, both academically and personally will
be needed if you are to achieve your true potential. It is also vital that you
maintain a high attendance percentage next year as time is precious and
there is no substitute for spending quality time in lessons with your subject
teachers.
As usual make sure you stay safe, apply the sun cream and take care of loved ones over the
summer holiday. I look forward to seeing you all when we return in September. Many thanks
for all your hard work and positive contributions both to the Academy, local community,
Year 8 and of course your houses. It has been a pleasure working with you and watching
you develop over the last 12 months.
Textiles
Year 9s have been busy making dresses for a charity called ‘Dress a girl around the
world –UK’. The dresses will be sent to orphans in developing countries in the
autumn term. All are made from 100% cotton and the students have created some
impressive original designs. The students have been very excited to make a dress for
a child in need, and I am impressed with how precise and neat their sewing has been.
This project will be run every year by the Textiles department and if anyone would like
to donate good quality 100% cotton fabric towards this project donations will be very
gratefully received, as well as any thread, zips buttons etc.
Dresses displayed by Francesca Lazar, Aaliyah Wamala, Abigail Crockett and Leah
Busch.
Other students have also been busy, images to the right show a block print design
waistcoat inspired by the theme ‘On the Beach’ made by
Reilly Soussi in Year 9 modelled by his younger brother.
We are fortunate enough to benefit from a
strong relationship with the Coulsdon
Rotary club, two events they have made
possible this half term include:
Young Writers Competition
Earlier this year, sixty of our students entered the
national Rotary Young Writers competition. Students
were expected to produce a written piece based on the
title ‘Our World is Beautiful’. There were many
wonderfully written pieces and the Rotary club were
particularly impressed with the overall calibre of the
students’ work.
However, they were particularly pleased with the work of
two students: Sophie Russell was highly commended
for her piece and Tom Porter who managed to do even
better, finishing second overall nationally!
Silver Service Dinner
Year 10 food students got to
experience the silver service world
of catering this half term as they
prepared and served a 4 course
meal organised and funded by the
Rotary. It was a great evening and
the food was “exceptional”.

Year 11 Message– from Mrs Patel
This final newsletter bulletin to the students and parents is written with mixed emotions, mainly
because we have eventually arrived at important crossroads in their lives, education and destiny.
Year 11 students have been an amazing group of students, each with a unique personality and
together making a very special,
awesome year group.
It was a delight to see you all celebrating together at the Prom on 1st July. All students looked outstanding in their
suits and dresses and it was the perfect end to the five years spent together through your Oasis Journey. I look
forward to seeing you on results morning, Thursday 25th August 9.30-11am, where we can celebrate further as you
receive your hard earned results.
On behalf of your mentors and all of the staff, I add my thanks to your parents and carers for their continued support
during this crucial year. It has been a fantastic opportunity to share this time with you and to watch you grow in
confidence, maturity and stature. As my final year group, I will treasure all of the times that we shared.
Have a wonderful summer break and see you in August.

Team Young Leaders
On the 12th of July Jesse-James Ahlijah and
George Funnell traveled to City Hall in London
to be honoured for all their hard work as well
as the hard work of Robert Herring, Hazem El
Tawil and Nathan Cook (who could not attend
due to other commitments) as a part of their
campaign for change amongst Young People
of Croydon. They have been working very
hard along with St Andrews CoE School
Croydon to show members of the community
that there is more to young people than the
‘fighting, drugs and alcohol’ that is portrayed in
the media, and that they are positive role
models and hard working.
This has been a long and drawn out process
that started late 2015. On the 12th they were
encouraged and congratulated by Andy
Barrow who is a former Paralympics winner
and Mandy Mackenzie who is the senior policy
advisor for the youth policy team.
It’s been a busy time in MFL with end of year assessments, primary masterclasses and project
work. Many thanks to our group of Year 9 student helpers for their support with the primary
masterclasses. S25 and S4 were transformed into French cafés as the children learnt to order items in
French and acted out some very realistic roleplays. There were some interesting guests at the café!
Our annual day trip to Boulogne takes place 4 th October 2016. This is open to all current Year 7 French
students and is usually oversubscribed, so hopefully all those who want to go have returned the form and payment.
Well done to all our students in the end of year assessments. There were some fantastic results, with the top performers in each
year group as follows:

Y7 Ellen Jones,
Y8 Melissa Biggs
Y9 Laura Chisholm, Leah-Marie Busch, Gina Bujka
