Drama action... This half term students have been taking part in a programme run by Croydon Youth Theatre and got the chance to perform at the Shoestring Theatre to productions of DNA and Chatroom. Students had been working with their Youth Theatre leader Craig for 6 weeks. Students have enjoyed learning new games and working with different people within the school as well as outside. Croydon Youth Theatre Organisation were very impressed at the standard and quality of our students performance and have been given a special invite to attend Croydon Youth Theatre on Fridays. Congratulations to Oliver Griffin, Year 11, for securing a place at the Brit School in September to study BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Performing Arts (Acting). I would also like to say well done to Luke Steele and Alfie Earl-Day, also Year 11, who a will be appearing in ‘Hospital Food’ at the Courtyard Theatre from 6th—10th September. Tickets can be purchased on their website by clicking here. Geography rocks! Throughout both Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4, this year in Geography has been extremely busy and exciting! During this half term Years 7 and 8 have been undertaking work on Japan and their culture. Year 9 students have also been working hard; they have been learning about development by undertaking role plays which help them to understand why some countries in the world are less advantaged than others which has really stretched their creativity. Year 10 have been focused on their final goal of GCSEs throughout the year and have been working on rivers, coasts, tourism and population. No Pen Day has provided many opportunities in Geography, including year 8 producing their very own Urban Utopia towns based on work done in class on settlements and urbanisation, and Year 7 designed their very own ‘Green Transport’ designed to help reduce the global energy and environmental crisis. I wish them all the very best of luck in his next dramatic adventure.
Year 8 News… from Mr Cheshire Wow – the end of another year! How time flies when you have fun and enjoy what you are doing!! It seems amazing to think that another Year has passed at the Academy and everyone is a year older and hopefully wiser and more mature! It only seems like a few weeks ago that I was staring at 160 Year 8 students eager to find out who their new mentor was for this academic year. I have thoroughly enjoyed this year and feel privileged to be working with such a talented bunch of individuals. However if you have learnt anything this year it should be that talent only gets you so far….. hard work, and a desire to improve, both academically and personally will be needed if you are to achieve your true potential. It is also vital that you maintain a high attendance percentage next year as time is precious and there is no substitute for spending quality time in lessons with your subject teachers. As usual make sure you stay safe, apply the sun cream and take care of loved ones over the summer holiday. I look forward to seeing you all when we return in September. Many thanks for all your hard work and positive contributions both to the Academy, local community, Year 8 and of course your houses. It has been a pleasure working with you and watching you develop over the last 12 months. Textiles Year 9s have been busy making dresses for a charity called ‘Dress a girl around the world –UK’. The dresses will be sent to orphans in developing countries in the autumn term. All are made from 100% cotton and the students have created some impressive original designs. The students have been very excited to make a dress for a child in need, and I am impressed with how precise and neat their sewing has been. This project will be run every year by the Textiles department and if anyone would like to donate good quality 100% cotton fabric towards this project donations will be very gratefully received, as well as any thread, zips buttons etc. Dresses displayed by Francesca Lazar, Aaliyah Wamala, Abigail Crockett and Leah Busch. Other students have also been busy, images to the right show a block print design waistcoat inspired by the theme ‘On the Beach’ made by Reilly Soussi in Year 9 modelled by his younger brother. Jack Petchey Congratulations to the following students for being awarded Jack Petchey prizes this year: Jesse-James Ahlijah– Character Traits Joseph Parker– swimming Ellie Dawson– Gymnastics Daniel McFall– Drama Bobbie Gavin– Library volunteer Stella Dzingai– Fundraising Alfie Earl Day– Music Luke Jetten– stage work Christina Greenfield– Air Cadets We are fortunate enough to benefit from a strong relationship with the Coulsdon Rotary club, two events they have made possible this half term include: Young Writers Competition Earlier this year, sixty of our students entered the national Rotary Young Writers competition. Students were expected to produce a written piece based on the title ‘Our World is Beautiful’. There were many wonderfully written pieces and the Rotary club were particularly impressed with the overall calibre of the students’ work. However, they were particularly pleased with the work of two students: Sophie Russell was highly commended for her piece and Tom Porter who managed to do even better, finishing second overall nationally! Silver Service Dinner Year 10 food students got to experience the silver service world of catering this half term as they prepared and served a 4 course meal organised and funded by the Rotary. It was a great evening and the food was “exceptional”.
