London Youth Games
13 students from year 10 had a fantastic opportunity to volunteer at this year’s
London Youth Games, held at Crystal Palace sports centre. The 13 students were
selected from the year group as potential sports leaders of the future and
undertook two 2 hour training sessions at the Academy with David Smith, the
Croydon schools sports co-ordinator in the Games Force training programme. The
group was split into two with some helping at the special swimming competition
and the others helping to umpire at the tennis tournament. All the students had an
amazing experience which they will never forget. Our hope is that they will go onto to volunteer at many
other sporting events in the borough and continue with their leadership training next year.
Euro 2016
Every two years the Academy holds it’s World and Euro football tournaments in line
with the official tournaments. This year the Euro 2016 tournament took on a new
look with the houses organising their own teams and representing countries. For
two weeks every lunchtime teams competed in groups and then in the knockout
stages until the final on the last Friday of the second week. Over 100 students from
across the whole Academy came to watch every lunchtime whilst others played Fifa
on the Xbox and PS3 in the internet café to raise money for charity.
The tournament saw Portugal play Wales in the final, and just like in the official tournament, Portugal won 2-1!
record. Davina Boateng broke 2 year records in 100m and 200m which were also whole school records too,
and Harley Breslin-Ward who broke the whole school shot-put record.
School’s Athletics
In this year’s Athletics Championships held at Croydon sports Arena, students
outstanding individual performances from Tom Porter year 8 who came 2nd in the
1500m, Tasia-Jade Bogle 1st in the year 8 discus, Jayden Davis 2nd in the year 9
