used by everybody. Such facilities should include a “knowledge hotel”,
various restaurants and cafés, a second-hand store, super markets, a
music house, theatres, sports facilities, international school and kindergarten,
church/mosque and a so called ‘one-stop-shop’ to make it easier
for foreigners to be integrated in Denmark in respect of paperwork and
contact to all relevant authorities. Danish companies with strong brands
should participate in establishing all these facilities and thereby secure
awareness, synergy, differentiation, quality and preference.
The culture should be one of mutual respect and understanding and
young students will be requested to comply with certain rules to be able
to live there. The organisational structure will determinate how people
will live and work together and will facilitate integration and innovation
as well as internationalisation of the Danish participants.
Sustainability, not only financially, but also in respect of environmental
and social responsibility, should be visible in all elements of Copenhagen
Campus, from the choice of building material to energy sources and presorting
of waste as well as the choice of employees at CC, where diversity
should be a key word.
The following four areas have been analysed:
1. nordhavnen
2. Ørestad north
3. The old People’s Village (nørrebro)
4. Carlsberg’s old brewery area in Valby.
The analysis shows that the realisation of CC would be possible both in
nordhavnen and at Carlsberg’s old brewery area. Based on the focus on
sustainability, the infrastructure and readiness, as well as the world-wide
6
known Carlsberg brand with more than 150 years of history and culture,
the conclusion is that the first phase of CC should be established in
Carlsberg’s old brewery area in Valby.
Based on the experience from the first phase, the second part of CC
could be established in nordhavnen in Copenhagen, which most
probably also will develop into a very interesting area.
The architectural principle for CC should contain a new type of campus,
which creates a natural interaction between foreigners and Danes as well
as between students, research people, trainees and the local population
in the area. The interaction will create ties, which will make it attractive
for foreigners to prolong their stay in Denmark or to decide to stay here
permanently. Social relations are crucial for successful integration.
The CC project should signal world class in quality, sustainability, foresightedness,
and promote happiness and respect amongst people. The
buildings and their location will reflect the diversity of the people living
there in such a way, that no group will be isolated but rather mixed in a
large area. Public institutions will be mixed with private, foreign people
with the Danes, young students with families etc.
Denmark faces a challenge, both in respect of the lack of talent and in
respect of our demographic development, as there will not be enough
people on the labour market in the future to pay for the ones not working.
Each year around 16,000 foreign students come to Denmark to study –
either as exchange students or on a full degree. If we were able to retain
just 10% of these, and if sportsfaciliteter they would stay and use their skills internet in café Denmark
