One of the real challenges is to not be too distant to contemporary visual art.
For instance, the contemporary exhibition initiative U-turn wants to invite visual
artist Lillibeth Cuenca. The education system has to be part of the new venue.
Jesper de Neergaard:
To emphasize what Tove said: The first step is crucial, DK is in a peculiar
situation concerning performing arts, all other countries are far ahead of us,
education is one problem – contemporary educations will create a demand
for performance art and different views on our lives. What comes first – their
knowing what to demand rather than their demand? Education is crucial.
Christine Fentz, moderator:
People move abroad to get a performance art education.
Can’t you start by Warehouse 9 that is already here? Let it not be a white
elephant. You have to have an entrepreneur leader. Grow it from a small point
and invest in your leader.
You are not going to get the big sort of thing, get over it!
Christine Fentz, moderator:
Important to make clear that this conference is made in order for us to get
To build up a contemporary performance audience, we have to have 10-15
international visiting groups, and this is not hard to find. Otherwise, the young
generations of audiences think that performing art is just people walking slowly
– and audience will go to contemporary art and never to a theatre. We have to
find some money to fight that. We do not need to build up new institutions.
Gritt Uldall-Jessen, audience:
At Warehouse 9 there is a co-production festival with Spill (UK) in October.
Christine Fentz, moderator:
You are not visible in Denmark if you are not in the annual theatre
programme!
Jette Lund, audience:
It would be nice if venues like Warehouse 9 were in the annual theatre program,
but the long term planning of this publication (1 - 11⁄2 year ahead) doesn’t give
the possibility to include new projects and new artists along the way.
Helen Medland:
All the small theatre groups should get together and have a program come out
1⁄2 a year ahead.
Advice to Warehouse 9 – communicate! Use the other theatres, become
friends with them.
