At the exhibition inside and around the old brickworks, the individual demarcated areas each offer an account of their own swatch of history, determined by - and handed along - through the artistic grip that is applied here. However, these diverse narratives will also come to be stamped by the place itself, by its earlier function and probably also by the circumstance that here we find ourselves to be standing in a landscape that is remote from the urban metropolis. Such a site-specific artistic orientation has its own placement and tradition in newer art history, where especially the 1960s and 70s were a flourishing period. Among the most important practitioners of that time were the American artists Robert Smithson (1938- 1973) and Gordon Matta-Clark (1943-1978), with their sweeping interventions in landscapes and in buildings which up until that time were entirely devoid of status in relation to the activities in the established art world's exhibition rooms. This is an art that seizes hold very directly into the world of reality. Its attempts at unifying the aesthetic element with the world of life have created the anacrusis for an extensive sequence of different and new artistic praxis forms, where especially the installation procedure subsequently came to play a central role. This is also the case with the exhibition in Knabstrup, where the strategy, as has already been suggested, is an artistic manner of addressing oneself to the architecture and to the whole multiplicity that is found here in a most concrete sense. Some of the artists will also be enlisting the participation of elements from the inventory at hand. In doing so, they will be drawing even nearer to the world of the given reality, but in a way that simultaneously establishes a temporary parallel world. An alternative narrative about the things' history and meaning, far more complex than the nostalgic dream of the days of yore that these objects might otherwise immediately be thought to elicit. The art that converts and expands the Knabstrup Brickworks for some time opens up for image formations and abundant visual possibilities.
