The following text is about optimization of the recycling system at Danish Crown in Herning. An
analysis of the existing system shows various optimization opportunities. An energy balance presents
the first point of attack, which is the scald tank. A study has revealed a high loss, which is reduced by
covering and insulation. Calculations establish additional energy requirement, which is provided by
the process water. To avoid purchase of district heating investigations of several options are
initiated.
The challenge is to achieve the desired temperatures with the recovery system while devoting the
water. In order to achieve the high temperatures, the flow has to be lowered, but it is not coherent
with cooling compressors requirements.
By including a future investment, i.e. air compressors, the purchase of district heating could be
reduced. To eliminate the need for purchase of district heating, a heat pump is supplied in the
cooling system. The heat pump contributes to the heating water, but also to reducing the power
obtained in the condensing unit.
By implementing these systems in the existing system, the need for purchased energy is almost
avoided.
