COMPETENCIAS LINGÜÍSTICAS Y EXTRALINGÜÍSTICAS DEL TRADUCTOR
LINGUISTIC AND EXTRALINGUISTIC COMPETENCES FOR A TRANSLATOR
Valeria Sierra, Samuel Carrillo, Mónica Gaitan, Gerardo Villatoro, Ricardo Salguero
Abstract
Linguistics and Extra linguistics competence is actually a primary point to take into account when
trying to succeed in the labor of translation. To be competence in both of them, a wide knowledge
is required because translators are the ones who brake languages walls and it is important to
know how to measure the ability to communicate each other. Linguistic competence is the way
one person develop a language. This system of linguistic knowledge was proposed by Noam
Chomsky and it talks about how language is used in communication. On the other hand, we have
extra linguistic competence, which is an external language factor. That means that this is a very
important part of language even though it is external from it but is a big influence on the global
communication system. It can be applicable for to the labor of a translator because it is important
to know how to use language or how to develop it in the communication process. One of the
differences that we can see between the linguistic and extra linguistic competence, is that linguistic
competence is the way of using language while extra linguistics is external to language.
Key Words: linguistics, extralinguistics, external language, communication, translation.
COMPETENCIA LINGÜÍSTICA PARA
TRADUCTORES
Primero debemos de saber la definición de
“Competencia Lingüística”, es un sistema de
reglas que rige un entendimiento tácito
individual de lo que es correcto o aceptable
dependiendo de nuestro lenguaje en uso, y
de lo que no lo es. La Lingüística
Estructuralista nos habla de esto; Noam
Chomsky (1928) dijo que la Competencia
puede ser considerada como una revisión de
la idea de un sistema específico del lenguaje,
también como la habilidad de poder
interpretar y producir documentos. Chomsky
dice en su libro “Aspects of the Theory of
LINGUISTIC COMPETENCE FOR
TRANSLATORS
First we need to define “Linguistic
Competence”, is known as the system of
rules that governs an individual´s tacit
understanding of what is either correct or
acceptable and what is not, depending the
language that they speak. Structuralist
Linguistics talks about this; Noam Chomsky
(1928) said that the Competence can be
regarded as a revision of the idea of a
specific system of language, also with
abilities when translating and interpreting
instruments.
Chomsky says in his book “Aspects of the
Theory of Syntax” that for being unobserved
with this competence, is necessary to know
grammar, lexicon, phonetics, and the
language syntax in use in the case of
translators, with both languages, source
language (SL) and target language (TL). Is
accentuated in Chomsky´s studies that
problems with lexicon will always be in a
translator´s life, during their professional
employ the lexicon going to increase,
however, competences for a translator will
not just be Linguistic, grammatical and
textual competence are competences to
consider according to Bachman (1990), and
Chomsky do reference applying it with
Linguistics.
Para ser un traductor es necesario tener
la competencia traductora, la cual es un
conjunto de habilidades, conocimientos y
actitudes para ser profesionalmente un
traductor, esta competencia distingue al
experto del que no es; y al profesional de
aquel que no lo es. (Kelly, 2002).
traductores. Mencionan seis componentes
de la competencia traductora, definida como:
Competencia comunicativa en dos
idiomas.
Competencia psico- Fisiológica
Competencia estratégica
Competencia Profesional
Instrumental
Competencia Extra-lingüística
To be a translator it’s necessary to have
the translation competence, which is a set of
abilities, knowledge and attitudes to be
professionally a translator, that competence
distinguishes the expert from that one who´s
not an expert; and the professional from that
one who´s not a professional. (Kelly, 2002).
According to the Handbook for Translator
Trainers, Hurtado (1996) explains that extralinguistic
is a sub competence,
contemplating three areas of skills:
processing skills, transfer skills and target
text processing skills.
In a recent research, the PACTE group at the
“Universidad Autónoma de Barcelona” in
Spain has developed a model of translation
competence, to define it and to define its
acquisition, drawing on previous work by
Hurtado, in which extra-linguistic
competence is an essential element for the
translators work. They mention six
components of translation competence
defined as:
Communicative competence in two
languages
Psycho-physiological competence
Strategic competence
Professional instrumental
competence
Extra-linguistic competence
Transfer competence
Competencia de transferencia
La sub competencia extra-lingüística es
definida como:
Conocimiento Bicultural: Es acerca del
conocimiento sobre las culturas de partida y
de llegada
Conocimiento Enciclopédico: Sobre el
mundo en general
The extralinguistic sub competence is
defined as:
Bicultural Knowledge: Knowledge of the
source cultures and the target cultures.
Encyclopedic Knowledge: This is the
knowledge about the world in general.
Thematic Knowledge: About specialized
topics and themes.
Conocimiento Temático: Sobre temas
especializados.
DIFERENCIAS ENTRE LAS
COMPETENCIAS LINGÜÍSTICAS Y
EXTRALINGÜÍSTICAS
Debemos saber entonces, que entre estas
competencias existen grandes diferencias
que a la hora de traducir o interpretar se
complementan entre ellas para perfeccionar
nuestro mensaje en la lengua meta. Algunas
de las diferencias son:

La competencia lingüística es un
caso procedimental que se enfoca en
la manera en que se traducirá, y lo
extralingüístico es un caso
declaratorio que se enfoca más en el
qué que en el cómo.
En lo lingüístico se preocupa más en
lo textual y gramatical del texto a
traducir. Por otra parte en lo
extralingüístico, se
DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THE
LINGUISTIC AND EXTRALINGUISTIC
COMPETENCES
Then, we should know that between these
competences there are big differences that
when translating or interpreting it
complements each other in order to improve
our text in the target language. Some
differences are:

The linguistic competence is a
procedural case that focus in the way
in which the text would be translated,
and the extralinguistic competence is
a declaratory case that focus more in
the what that in the how.
In the linguistic field it cares more
about the textual and grammatical
part of the text to translate. On the
other hand, the extralinguistic
competence focus more
enfoca más en la cultura de la
audiencia, cultura general y temas
especializados.
La competencia lingüística es
metodológica y pocas veces puede
variar en un texto, mientras que la
competencia extralingüística varía
según el público al que se esté
dirigiendo y no todas sus ramas se
pueden utilizar siempre.
Expertos analizan lo lingüístico como
algo normativo y lo extralingüístico
como algo interpersonal.
in the culture of the public, general
culture and specialized topics.
The linguistic competence is
methodologic and few times can
change in a text, while the
extralinguistic competence changes
depending on the public and not all
his subfields can always be used.
Experts analyze the linguistic part as
something normative and the
extralinguistic as something
interpersonal.
