The little church in Hammer built of local tufa
dates from the close of the 12th century. The
west part of the church was rebuilt in the late
Middle Ages. This included a new brick gable
(fig. 4) as well as abutting brick-built pilasters at
the west end. During the same period a vault
was put up in the chancel; it was removed in
1863. Some years later a timber-frame porch
was replaced by the present one.
A characteristic of this small church is its 19th
century furniture: pews from c. 1857, the altarpiece
from the 1870s, and pulpit from 1892. Yet
not only has a simple Romanesque font sur-
vived, but also four late medieval figures of
wood are displayed by the walls: from an taltarpiece
from the close of the 15th century a damaged
Throne of Grace representation and the
figures of Mary Magdalene and St. Barbara, and
from the †altar-piece of a side altar a carving of
the apocalyptic Virgin Mary from c. 1520,
which is very similar to and probably from the
same workshop as the representation of the Virgin
Mary in Vejrup church, Ribe amt. The bell
from 1829 was cast for Tørring church by P.P.
Meilstrup of Randers, but it was transferred to
Hammer church about 1910.
