You Called Me Jacky ist typisch für die Anfänge
der Basler Videokunst. Pipilotti Rist selbst präsentiert
im Karaoke-Stil das Lied über Verlust
und Schmerz einer Liebe, Luftgitarre spielend,
mal Schulmädchen, mal Vamp. Das Video zitiert
populäre Musik-Clips. Stadtlandschaften, die
aus einem fahrenden Zug aufgenommen wurden,
sind über die Performerin geblendet. Diese
entführen in eine traumwandlerische Situation.
Das Unbeholfene der Gesten kollidiert mit dem
nachgeahmten Staranspruch. Die Fragilität des
Seins als Frau und Künstlerin bricht hervor.

You Called Me Jacky is a typical work from the beginnings
of video art in Basel that imitates the
music clip genre. Pipilotti Rist – part-schoolgirl,
part-vamp – lip-syncs this song about the pain of
love lost, playing the air guitar. Cityscapes filmed
from the window of a moving train are superimposed
on the performer, drawing the scene into a
sleepwalking-like atmosphere. The clumsy gestures
clash with the impersonation of stardom,
revealing the fragility of Being as a woman and an
artist.
