Warum Maneo? 11 ”I will survive!“ MANEO comes from the Latin expression for “I continue to exist.” It doesn’t matter what happens to me – I will survive, just like it is described in Gloria Gaynor’s disco hit “I will survive” which dates back to a time in which gays faced many more difficulties than they do today. The situation for gay and lesbian people in Germany has improved considerably within the last ten years. But it is still not enough. Have you been insulted on the street lately by being called “queer” or “stupid gay boy?” Violence against gays, verbal or physical with bodily harm is, unfortunately, still part of everyday life. We decided to act. Insult number one “Gay” is still (or again?) the biggest insult in the playground and in schools, which also indicates that being gay has become more visible in society. The have fought and gained their place in society in doing so they have made themselves more noticeable and open for attacks from certain parts of society. Young people often use “gay” as a synonym for “weak” or “strange”. Trifling? No, because what they do is devaluating facts, things or people. It is especially young men who try to prove their manliness and strength by attacking gays. Homosexuals end up being the victim of it all. Violence starts with words already. Unfortunately, the second favourite swear word still is “You gay pig.” ‘No show areas’ Every gay knows best where not to go, where not to kiss his partner, in order to be left alone. Even in a liberal city like Berlin it is often advisable to be discreet in certain parts of the city where gay life is not so well established. What happens when, despite all precautions, you come across problems and dangerous situations? A punch in the face? A kick in the ribcage? One insult too many that hurts your soul? MANEO ensures that no gay man has to carry his burdens alone because he doesn’t know who to turn to for help. All gay victims of violence have a place at MANEO, where they can find someone they can talk to, whether face to face or on the telephone. « I will survive ! » MANEO est un terme d’origine latine qui signifie : « je persiste ». Une formule qui rappelle la fameuse chanson de Gloria Gaynor « Quoi qu’il arrive ou quoi qu’il m’arrive, je survivrai », un texte écrit à une époque où l’on menait la vie dure aux gays et aux lesbiennes. Depuis quelques années, la situation s’est améliorée en Allemagne mais tout n’est pas rose. Dans la rue, par exemple, se faire traiter de « pédale » ou d’ « enculé » fait encore, trop souvent, partie du quotidien. Nous voulons réagir. Pédé : insulte numéro un « Pédé » reste (ou bien est à nouveau) l’insulte numéro un dans les cours de récréation. Le fait que les homos ne doivent plus se cacher et ont conquis une place dans l’espace public contribue paradoxalement à les rendre plus aisément attaquables. Le terme « pédé » pour les jeunes est synonyme de « faible », « bizarre ». Cette constatation n’est pas anodine. La plupart des violences homophobes restent le fait de jeunes hommes qui considèrent que leur masculinité est mise en cause par les gays auxquels ils s’en prennent. La violence débute avec des mots. Et malheureusement, l’insulte qui arrive en deuxième position est « sale pédale ». Les zones à éviter Tout gay sait qu’il y a des endroits où il vaut mieux ne pas s’afficher, où il vaut mieux ne pas embrasser son copain. Même à Berlin, forte de sa réputation libérale, mieux vaut faire attention en dehors des quartiers gays du centre. Lorsque des agressions se produisent, MANEO vient en aide aux victimes pour qu’elles ne doivent pas affronter seules leurs blessures physiques ou psychiques. Une victime n’est en effet pas toujours capable de surmonter seule une telle situation en raison du désarroi et de la confusion qu’elle engendre. Ces personnes obtiennent par téléphone ou lors d’un entretien chez MANEO le soutien dont elles ont besoin. „I will survive!“ Słowo MANEO pochodzi z łaciny i oznacza: przetrwam. Niezależnie, co się dzieje lub co mi się stało, przetrwam – tak śpiewała Gloria Gaynor w swojej piosence „I will survive“, która pochodzi jeszcze z czasów, kiedy gejom żyło się trudniej niż dziś. Szczególnie w ciągu ostatnich 10 lat sytuacja gejów i lesbijek w Niemczech uległa poprawie. Nie oznacza to jednak, że wszystko dziś jest w porządku: Zdażyło Ci się kiedyś zostać wyzwanym na ulicy jako „ciota” lub „głupi pedał”? Przemoc wobec gejów, werbalna i fizyczna, zdarza się każdego dnia. My reagujemy na to? Wyzwisko numer jeden „Pedał“ to wciąż (a może znowu?) najczęściej używane wyzwisko na szkolnych podwórkach. Wiąże się to także z faktem, iż geje stali się bardziej widoczni. Przez to, że zdobyli sobie miejsce w przestrzeni publicznej, stali się bardziej rozpoznawalni i łatwiejsi jako cel agresji. Słowo „pedał“ używana jest przez młodzież czasami w znaczeniu przenośnym, jako synonim „słabego”, „dziwnego”, czy „osobliwego”. Czy to tylko niewinny fakt? Nie, ponieważ w rzeczywistości chodzi o to, by kogoś po prostu poniżyć. Szczególnie młodzi mężczyźni próbują w ten sposób zmierzyć się ze swoją męskością i siłą, a robią to kosztem gejów, którzy stają się tym samym ofiarami. Przemoc rozpoczyna się od słów. Niestety wyzwiskiem numer dwa jest wciąż „ty pedalska świnio”. ,No-Show-Areas‘ Każdy gej wie, w jakich miejscach najlepiej się nie ujawniać, w jakich sytuacjach lepiej nie pocałować swojego przyjaciela, jeśli nie chce się mieć z tego powodu kłopotów. Również w liberalnym mieście, jakim jest Berlin, szczególnie w dzielnicach poza jego centrum czasem rozsądniej jest nie ujawniać się, zgodnie z zasadą, że „to nie jest wypisane na moim czole”. Lecz co zrobić, jeśli mimo wszystko zdarzenia nie toczą się tak, jakbyśmy chcieli? Uderzenie pięścią w twarz, kopnięcie w brzuch, słowa, które ranią? MANEO jest właśnie po to, by żaden gej nie musiał pozostać z własnym bólem w samotności i czuć się zagubiony, nie wiedząc, gdzie udać się z takim problemem: osoby, które doświadczyły jakiejkolwiek przemocy znajdą w MANEO miejsce i ludzi, z którymi będą mogły porozmawiać, zarówno przez telefon, jak i w cztery oczy, a następnie otrzymać dalszą pomoc. „I will survive!“ MANEO entstammt dem Lateinischen und bedeutet: Ich bestehe fort. Gerade in den letzen zehn Jahren hat sich die Situation für Schwule und Lesben in Deutschland verbessert, doch noch längst ist nicht alles gut: Schon mal auf der Straße als „Tunte“ oder „blöde Schwuchtel“ beschimpft worden? Gewalt gegen Schwule, verbal oder tätlich mit Körpergewalt, gehört leider noch immer zum Alltag. Wir reagieren darauf. Schimpfwort Nummer Eins „Schwul“ ist noch immer (oder schon wieder?) Schimpfwort Nummer Eins auf den Pausenhöfen, was auch damit zusammenhängt, dass Schwule sichtbarer geworden sind. Sie haben sich einen Platz in der Öffentlichkeit erobert – dadurch sind sie zugleich erkennbarer und angreifbarer geworden. „Schwul“ wird von Jugendlichen manchmal nur im übertragenen Sinn verwendet, als Synonym für „weich“, „komisch“, „seltsam“. Eine Bagatelle? Nein, denn es geht im Kern darum, einen Sachverhalt, einen Gegenstand oder einen Menschen abzuwerten. Insbesondere junge Männer möchten so ihre eigene Männlichkeit und Stärke unter Beweis stellen. Auf Kosten der Schwulen, die sie zu ihren Opfern machen. Gewalt beginnt schon mit Worten. Und leider lautet das beliebteste Schimpfwort Nummer Zwei immer noch: „Du schwule Sau“. ,No-Show-Areas‘ Jeder Schwule weiß noch immer, an welchen Orten er sich besser nicht zu erkennen gibt, in welchen Situationen man seinem Freund besser keinen Kuss gibt, wenn man in Ruhe gelassen werden möchte. Auch im liberalen Berlin ist es außerhalb szeniger Innenstadt- Bezirke manchmal klüger unterzutauchen, frei nach der Devise „es steht einem ja nicht ins Gesicht geschrieben.“ Und was, wenn es trotz aller Bedachtsamkeit aus dem Ruder gelaufen ist? Eine Faust im Gesicht, ein Tritt in die Rippen, ein böses Wort zuviel, das die Seele verletzt hat? MANEO kümmert sich darum, dass kein Schwuler darauf angewiesen ist, seinen Schmerz ganz alleine auf der Tanzfläche zu verarbeiten, weil er nicht weiß, wohin mit sich und seiner Verwirrung: Betroffene von Gewalt und Straftaten finden bei MANEO eine Anlaufstelle, jemanden, mit dem sie reden können – ob am Telefon oder unter vier Augen – und nicht nur das.
12 MANEO’s work · L’action de MANEO · Działalność MANEO Die Arbeit von Maneo 13 What we do MANEO is an independent project of Mann-O- Meter e.V. (registered organisation of charity), Berlin’s gay information and advice bureau at the underground station “Nollendorfplatz.” Mann-O- Meter is located in a popular gay neighbourhood in the district of Berlin-Schoeneberg. We have two offices there and you can phone us between 5 and 7 pm everyday, or you just pop in. So it does not take much to drop by for a cup of coffee and a chat. If you prefer to stay anonymous or just favour an easier way to get in touch with us, you, of course, can check our website: www.maneo.de MANEO works with volunteers and full-time staff. At the moment there is one full-time staff (project leader), one young man doing his community service (alternative to military service) and ten volunteers. Latter help us with manning the phones and giving personal initial advice at the weekends. Target group MANEO’s advice and care is directed at gay and bisexual people who are victims of violent acts and anti gay discrimination. Included here are victims of domestic violence. There is also violence in gay relationships. We also support relatives, partners and witnesses of violent acts. These people are also very important to us, because witnesses can suffer from the experience of violence too. This is why they often make a quick escape form the crime scene. Later on they often feel ashamed and scared, because they did not stay there. The fact that they are not around when the crime is being investigated makes it difficult to find the culprit in many of the cases. MANEO is located in the heart of Berlin, which attracts tourists, people coming here to work and lots of inexperienced young men, who only just had their coming-out moving here from the ”provinces.“ MANEO wants to be a first point of advice for them. Advice and action MANEO’s first priority is victim support. Victims of violence and discrimination shall come here to feel welcome for our support. MANEO offers advice and support of any kind. In order to avoid violent activity in the first place, MANEO offers anti-violence projects that are meant for prevention and education. Part of this is the documentation of criminal acts that have not been reported to the authorities. Scientists estimate that more than 80 % of the crimes against homosexuals do not result in a conviction. We are dedicated to increasing the rate of conviction. Our anti-violence prevention is based upon analysing information which are partly findings from our victim support work, but also from our documentation of violent activities. We inform the public about our work on a regular basis and report on current occurrences. We organise anti violence seminars and special lessons at police schools. By now most of the police force know what homophobic violence means and have been specially trained to deal with cases involving the matter. Notre travail MANEO est un projet autonome hébergé au sein du centre d’informations homosexuel Mann-O-Meter e.V. et a un statut associatif. Mann-O-Meter se trouve à Nollendorfplatz au cœur du quartier gay de l’arrondissement de Schöneberg. Nous disposons de deux bureaux et sommes joignables quotidiennement de 17 à 19 heures. Notre cible MANEO s’adresse en premier lieu aux gays et bisexuels victimes d’actes ou de propos homophobes, mais aussi à leurs partenaires et proches ainsi qu’aux témoins. Nous prenons également en charge les victimes de violences domestiques. Ces dernières surviennent également au sein des couples gays. Elles quittent souvent rapidement le lieu de l’agression, ont mauvaise conscience, éprouvent de la peur et de la honte. Leur « discrétion » rend souvent l’enquête de la police plus difficile. MANEO est installé au centre de Berlin et s’adresse à tous : touristes, jeunes et mois jeunes, nouvel arrivé de province. Conseils et aide L’aide aux victimes constitue la première mission de MANEO qui se tient à leur disposition pour leur proposer conseils et aide. Le travail de prévention et la rédaction d’un rapport annuel sont une autre mission de MANEO. Plus de 80 % des agressions commises contre les homosexuels ne donne pas lieu au dépôt d’une plainte. Nous nous efforçons de faire changer cette situation. MANEO recense tous les cas d’homophobie dont il a connaissance et informe le public aussi souvent que possible. Nous organisons des séminaires de lutte contre la violence et réalisons des interventions en milieu scolaire ainsi qu’auprès des policiers en formation. Grupa docelowa Oferta pomocy świadczona przez MANEO skierowana jest do homo- i biseksualnych mężczyzn, którzy doświadczyli homofobicznej dyskryminacji, a także do ofiar przemocy domowej. Przemoc występuje też w związkach gejowskich. Pomagamy także najbliższym, partnerom oraz świadkom czynów przestępczych. Szczególnie ważna jest dla nas pomoc tym ostatnim, gdyż oni również mogą cierpieć z powodu przeżytych wydarzeń. Często z poczuciem winy i strachu opuszczają miejsce wypadku i ich nieobecność czyni niemożliwym odnalezienie sprawców przemocy. MANEO mieści się w samym centrum Berlina, gdzie spotykają się turyści, szukający pracy oraz wiele osób bez doświadczenia tuż po swoim coming out, często z tak zwanej „prowincji”. To właśnie do nich skierowana jest nasza pomoc. Radzimy i pomagamy Podstawową działalnością MANEO jest pomoc ofiarom: rozmawiamy z osobami, które doświadczyły przemocy i dyskryminacji. MANEO doradza, a następnie wspiera ofiary. Aby jednak nie dochodziło do przemocy, prowadzimy akcje prewencyjne informujące o tym zjawisku, także poprzez rejestrowanie czynów przestępczych nie zgłoszonych na policję: około 80 procent wszystkich przestępstw przeciwko homoseksualistom nie jest zgłaszanych organom ścigania. Staramy się, aby jak największa ilość takich przypadków mimo wszystko ujrzała światło dzienne. MANEO systematycznie analizuje otrzymane dane i informuje o nich opinię publiczną. Organizujemy seminaria mające przeciwdziałać przemocy oraz spotkania edukacyjne w szkołach policyjnych. Obecnie większość policjantów wie, czym jest homofobia i jest przygotowanych do walki z nią. Mann-O-Meter liegt inmitten eines Ballungsraums schwuler Szeneeinrichtungen in Berlin-Schöneberg, wir sind dort mit zwei Büros täglich zwischen 17-19 Uhr direkt und telefonisch erreichbar. Kein großer Aufwand also, um einfach mal auf einen Kaffee vorbeizukommen. Noch einfacher (und falls gewünscht anonym) ist der Kontakt über das Internet: www.maneo.de. Im MANEO verbinden sich ehrenamtliches Engagement und hauptamtliche Beschäftigung. Zurzeit sind ein hauptamtlicher Mitarbeiter (Projektleiter), ein Zivildienstleistender und zehn ehrenamtliche Mitarbeiter für unser Projekt tätig. Letztere unterstützen z.B. die telefonische und persönliche Erstberatung an den Wochenenden. Zielgruppe Das Betreuungs-Angebot von MANEO richtet sich an schwule und bisexuelle Menschen, die von Gewalt und schwulenfeindlicher Diskriminierung betroffen sind, mit eingeschlossen sind Opfer häuslicher Gewalt. Es gibt auch Gewalt in schwulen Beziehungen. Wir sind auch für die Angehörigen, Lebenspartner und Zeugen von gewalttätigen Ereignissen da. Letztere liegen uns ebenfalls am Herzen, denn auch Zeugen können unter dem Eindruck von Gewalt leiden. Oft verlassen deshalb auch sie schnell den Tatort, später spüren sie Scham und Angst, nicht dageblieben zu sein – und ihr Fehlen vereitelt oft die Ermittlung der Täter. MANEO sitzt im Herzen von Berlin, Anziehungspunkt für Touristen, Job-Nomaden und jede Menge unerfahrene, frisch geoutete Neuzugänge aus der „Provinz“: Gerade auch für diese Menschen möchte MANEO ein Ansprechpartner sein. Rat und Tat Zur Tätigkeit von MANEO gehört an vorderster Stelle die Opferhilfe: Betroffene von Gewalt und Diskriminierung werden in Gesprächen aufgefangen. MANEO steht mit Rat und Unterstützung zur Seite. Damit es gar nicht erst dazu kommt, betreibt MANEO Gewaltprävention durch Aufklärung, zu der auch die Erfassung nicht angezeigter Straftaten gehört: Über 80 Prozent der Straftaten gegen Homosexuelle kommen nicht zur Anzeige. Wir bemühen uns, diese Dunkelziffer auszuleuchten. MANEO wertet alle gewonnen Informationen aus und informiert regelmäßig die Öffentlichkeit. Wir organisieren Anti-Gewalt-Seminare und Unterrichtsveranstaltungen an Polizeischulen. Mittlerweile wissen die meisten Polizeibeamten, was homophobe Gewalt ist und sind entsprechend sensibilisiert.
