On 2 May 2012, Vienna’s Dorotheum will be holding
its third “Rugs, Textiles and Tapestries” auction. The
diverse range of offerings includes Persian and Turkish Oriental
rugs and textiles, various silk rugs, Turkmen creations
as well as extraordinary tapestries and rare Chinese pieces.
“This time we are especially excited about fresh, high-quality
submissions from private collections”, says Dorotheum rug
expert Wolfgang Matschek.
A Dazgiri from southwest Anatolia from 1800 is considered
to be one of the most important items in the auction. This
village rug with dimensions measuring approx. 269 x 152
cm is in outstanding condition despite its old age; there are
only a few places with age-related repiling in typical heavily
oxidised brown. The appraised value is between EUR
18,000 – 24,000.
A northwest Persian Kelley from the mid-19th century is
also being put up for auction. This early Kurdish rug measuring
approx. 507 x 187 cm impresses with its colours and is
– like many antique rugs from the region – made from wool
of outstanding quality. The blend of floral-stylised pattern
elements is also especially appealing. The piece is in good
condition with acceptable signs of aging and wear. The side
edges were re-trimmed, the lower edge is slightly reduced,
and the upper edge is only barely preserved. There are no
noteworthy signs of repairs. Appraised price: EUR 20,000
– 24,000.
A China Velvet, a silk wall hanging from the Qing Dynasty
(18th century), is also worthy of mention. The approx.
240 x 130 cm piece is made from four sections with omitted
pile, whereby the various colours of the pattern’s wefts
– some with gold wire – produce a design featuring climbing
lotus flowers, bats and various meandering stripes. The
wall hanging has very little damage; the pile is in excellent
