Elevation of physical health problems to RISK statusThere should be NICE guidelinesDevelopment of MHN roleImprove leadership to inform and translate policyLen suggested that the group make a position statement to make it explicit that this groupsbelieves that physical health is part of the mental health nurses role. Jacqui and Patriciaagreed to work on this with support from Michael if needed.BusinessItem 1: Department of Health commissioned work on Positive and SafeBen Thomas and Joy DuxburyJoy led a discussion of the consultation of DH guidance in this area. She covered the keyaims, principles and headlines. The group has responded to the consultation formally andthis is on our web pages herehttp://mhnauk.swan.ac.uk/ResponsePapers/MHNAUKRCNPSBconsultation.pdfThe group felt that:PBS has some value but that it is untested in mental health and therefore some caution isrequired. Additionally, there are matters that need to be considered such as the involvementof psychologists, the length of stay of patients, the investment of time needed and trainingimplications. There may be better models and approaches and maybe we should explore therange in the document rather than make PBS the sole lead.Item 2: Research Priority SettingLen BowersFollowing our last meeting Len had requested that members contact him with their lists ofresearch priorities for mental health nursing as a precursor to establishing if we could andshould engage in a larger exercise to generate a list that could be used to lobby researchfunders so that calls for research more directly reflect the range of issues relevant to thedelivery, education and research of mental health nursing as a profession. At the meeting wediscussed the responses from the group. The level of engagement had been disappointingwith only 12 responses. Len grouped the research priorities into three broad areas:Clinical PracticeEducationManagementLen will circulate the list that we have agreed to date and seek further input on this includingsuggestions for next steps. At the meeting there was a discussion and show of hands on whowould wish to be involved in pursuing this issue with Len. We had some volunteers but wouldlike people to still get involved.Item 3:BlogMichael has renewed the blog space for another year. At present Julia Terry is using thisspace to engage with PhD students conducting research in mental health. To date there areabout 30 mental health nurse PhD students connecting via this initiative. The MHNAUK blog is a resource for the group and we encourage members to providematerial that can be included related to the group’s aims of promoting education research andgood practice in mental health nursing. Contact Michael directly and he can arrange for you tohave direct access to the blog or if you prefer he can post on your behalf seehttp://mhnauk.com/ for recent posts on the Skellern Lecture, the NPNR conference, researchpriorities and planning for meetings.Item 4: NPNR2 | P a g e
