David MaljkovicDisplay for LostPavilion at MetroPictures, New York,2011, Mixed MediaInstallationsansichtWiener Secession© David MaljkovicSummaryCurated by VanessaJ. Müller & AstridWege (EuropeanKunsthalle) andEva Birkenstock &Yilmaz Dziewior(Kunsthaus Bregenz). The European Kunsthalle, founded in Cologne 2005 as a discursiveplatform without fixed premises, combines a wide range of artisticprocedures and interventions in current and cultural debates.Emphasizing openness and processuality, it transforms the idea ofan institution set in a narrowly defined geographical frameworkinto a fluid concept that focuses on artistic processes. The KUB Arena presentation foregrounds performativity, drawing on past European Kunsthalle activities and staging artisticprojects that combine »eventfulness« and the engagement withissues of cultural, social, and institutional spaces.Designed by the Austrian artist Dorit Margreiter with LinaStreeruwitz and Luciano Parodi, the exhibition architecture builds onan earlier European Kunsthalle design in Cologne. There Margreitercreated a temporary modular structure, the final (and at the timeunrealized) element of which is to be completed in modified form inBregenz. Stephen Willats, whose multimedia In And Out The Underworldcaptured the social aspects of the Ebertplatz square in Colognein 2009, will be presenting a revised version of that work forBregenz. The work of the Macedonian artist Yane Calovski, whosework addresses institutional and personal narratives, suggests a newreading of the European Kunsthalle’s history. David Maljkovic, in hisDisplay for Lost Pavilion at Metro Pictures, New York and TemporaryProjection continues to engage with presentational forms andtheir reduction to objects, a filmless projector and a soundless soundsystem. Johannes Wohnseifer demonstrates an unusual use ofmuseum space in a series of photographs documenting his 1998invitation to skateboarder Mark Gonzales to adopt especially createdsculptures as performance ramps at the Städtisches MuseumAbteiberg in Mönchengladbach. Nick Mauss and Charlotte Moth arealso developing new works for the Bregenz exhibition.Following its cooperation with the Van Abbemuseum at Eindhoven2011, the KUB Arena’s present invitation is the second to aninstitution whose working methodology and program share manyfeatures with the KUB Arena’s own. An integral part of the EuropeanKunsthalle visit will be a weekend event program—June 8/9, 2013—packed with films, lectures, and talks.
