Auto clusters pave
the way for business success!
Success in business is much more than a matter of luck. An instrument currently used by Austria’s
automotive industry and its subcontractors to considerable success is a relatively new form of
cooperation, namely cluster networks for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Also of
great importance are the industry’s trade association (Fachverband der Fahrzeugindustrie) and
the working group of automotive subcontractors (ARGE Automotive Zulieferindustrie).

Wirtschaftliche Erfolge fallen einem nicht in den Schoß. Ein Instrument, mit dem Österreichs Kfz-
Industrie und die dazugehörigen Zulieferer sehr erfolgreich unterwegs sind, ist die relativ neue
Kooperationsform der Cluster-Netzwerke für Klein- und Mittelbetriebe (KMU). Von großer Bedeutung
sind auch der Fachverband der Fahrzeugindustrie und die ARGE Automotive Zulieferindustrie.
A
cluster is a platform for close cooperation according
to the simple equation “strength in numbers”. For
example, clusters enable small companies to compete
with larger ones, even for large orders, through coordinated
division of tasks. Another purpose is to save costs.
Subcontractors in Austria are helped on a regional level
by three automotive clusters: ACstyria, AC Upper Austria
and the Automotive Cluster Vienna Region. As a result,
strengths and needs of local companies can be dealt with.

What began in 1995 with a brilliant idea, business farsightedness,
a handful of courageous participants and a great
deal of enthusiasm is now one of the strongest economic
engines in Styria: ACstyria Autocluster GmbH (www.acstyria.com).
With 180 partner companies, 45,000 employees,
9.3 bn euros of sales and a range of services suitable for all
branches, this automotive network has served as a successful
communication centre, source of ideas, event organiser
and school for practical experience for years.
In addition to important major annual events such as the
Automobile Forum in Graz and others for buyers, service
providers or groups of international delegations, partners
and other interested parties are offered regular workshops
and study groups on production, fi nancial controlling, quality
management and human resources. This is joined by
profound experience in the specifi c area.
Ein Cluster ist eine Plattform enger Zusammenarbeit
nach der einfachen Formel „Gemeinsam sind wir
stark“. So machen es Cluster möglich, dass auch bei
großen Aufträgen kleine Betriebe im Wege einer koordinierten
Aufgabenteilung mit großen Unternehmen mithalten
können. Außerdem eröffnen sie ein Feld von Kosteneinsparungen.
Die Zulieferindustrie wird in Österreich auf regionaler
Ebene durch die drei Automobil-Cluster ACstyria, AC Oberösterreich
und Automotive Cluster Vienna Region gefördert.
So kann optimal auf regionale Stärken und Bedürfnisse
der einzelnen Unternehmen eingegangen werden.
