Im Sommer lädt der Hudson River auf eine Kajakfahrt ein, genauso
wie die Alsterkanäle auf eine Paddeltour. Beim Spaziergang am
Hamburger Hafen ist es Fürst Otto von Bismarck, der seine Gäste
preußisch grüßt. Seit 1906 steht die Statue im Alten Elbpark und ist
mit 34,30 Metern das größte Monument Hamburgs. In New York
ist es die 93 Meter hohe „Statue of Liberty“, die die Ankommenden
im Hafen begrüßt. Seit 1886 ist sie das Wahrzeichen des Big Apple.
Ein Blick auf die moderne Architektur beider Weltstädte verrät den
gleichen Geschmack und im wahrsten Sinne „hohe“ Ziele. Hadi
Teherani projektierte zwei „tanzende Türme“ aus Glas und Stahl,
die zukünftig auf der Reeperbahn Nr. 1 stehen werden. In New York
entstehen auf dem Gelände des ehemaligen World Trade Centers
vier gläserne Riesen: der Freedom Tower, auch genannt „1 World
Trade Center“, und die WTC Tower two, three
und four.
Kulturell bieten beide Metropolen ein buntes
Programm: Während das Musical „Ich war
noch niemals in New York“ mit Songs von Udo
Jürgens bis Herbst dieses Jahres in Hamburg
verlängert wurde, feiert New York mit „Come
Fly Away“ sein Idol Frank Sinatra. Und ein
Besuch der Kunsthalle und der Deichtorhallen
ist natürlich ebenso obligatorisch wie der des
Guggenheims und des Museum of Modern
Art. Nicht umsonst wird New York als Museumshauptstadt
gehandelt und ist stolz auf
die mehr als 150 Kunsteinrichtungen. Ham-
burgs Museumsszene kann sich ebenfalls
sehen lassen: Mehr als 50 Ausstellungsorte
bereichern die Kulturlandschaft.
New York ist halt immer etwas größer und prominenter,
im Kern aber doch ein wenig hanseatisch.
Oder Hamburg eher „new-yorkisch“?
Was das kühle blonde Astra für die
Hamburger ist, ist der erfrischende
Manhattan für die New Yorker.

In summer, the Hudson River is the perfect place to go kayaking;
alternatively, you could try some canoeing on the Alster canals. A
stroll through the Port of Hamburg is not complete until you have
been greeted by Prince Otto von Bismarck – his statue was erected
in the Old Elbe Park in 1906. At a height of 34.3 metres, it is Hamburg’s
largest monument. In New York, it is the Statue of Liberty,
93 metres in height, that welcomes arrivals to the port. Liberty has
been the Big Apple’s landmark since 1886.
A glance at the modern architecture of the two metropolises reveals
the same taste and the same goals. Hadi Teherani envisaged
two “dancing towers” of glass and steel which will one day stand at
Reeperbahn 1. In New York, four glass giants are being built on the
former site of the World Trade Center: the Freedom Tower, also
known as “1 World Trade Center”, and WTC
Towers two, three and four.
In terms of culture, both cities offer a colourful
programme. Whilst the musical “Ich war noch
niemals in New York” (“I haven't been to New
York yet”), with songs from Udo Jürgens, has
been extended to run until autumn this year in
Hamburg, New York is celebrating its idol, Frank
Sinatra, with “Come Fly Away”. And a visit to the
Kunsthalle and Deichtorhallen galleries is an
absolute must – as is a visit to the Guggenheim
and the Museum of Modern Art. New York is not
known as the museum capital for nothing, and
the city is proud of its more than 150 art establish-
ments. Hamburg’s museum scene is nothing to
be ashamed of, either, with more than 50 venues
expanding the cultural horizon. New York is, of
course, always somewhat bigger and grander, but
at its core it is in fact a little Hanseatic. Or is it
that Hamburg is a little “New Yorkish”?

New York and Hamburg, just between the two of us:

Sie leben auf unterschiedlichen Kontinenten und kennen sich
nicht. Und doch verbinden sie viele Gemeinsamkeiten: Am
27. September 1976 erblickt Timo Wopp im norddeutschen
Oldenburg das Licht der Welt. Nicht nur in der gleichen Stadt, sondern
auch im gleichen Krankenhaus wird am 30. September 1978
Kathrin Leist geboren. Ihre Väter, beide Professoren, kennen sich
von der Sportfakultät der Universität Oldenburg. Nach dem Abi
verschlägt es Timo um eines Gastspielvertrags im Schmidt Theater
und des Studiums willen nach Hamburg. Kathrin hat ebenfalls nur
ein Ziel vor Augen: Studieren in der Hansestadt. Anschließend brechen
beide von ihren Träumen getrieben auf nach New York.
Als erster deutscher Solojongleur erhält Timo ein Engagement im
New Yorker „Cirque du Soleil“, Kathrin wiederum fasst Fuß als
Redakteurin und Designerin und gründet ihr eigenes Modelabel
„kyline“. Neben allen Gemeinsamkeiten verbindet sie aber vor
allem ihre Liebe zu Hamburg und New York.
Wenn Kathrin über Hamburg spricht, so hört man förmlich ihr
norddeutsches Blut. Sie liebt den alten Elbtunnel, die Galerie Gen-

hey live on different continents and do not know each other.
But they have a lot in common: On 27 September, 1976, in
Oldenburg, northern Germany, Timo Wopp first sees the
light of day. And in the same city, in the same hospital even, on 30
September, 1978, Kathrin Leist begins her journey through life.
Their fathers, both professors, know each other from the sport
faculty at the University of Oldenburg. After completing secondary
school, Timo moves to Hamburg to study – and also because he
has a contract as a guest performer at Schmidt’s Theatre. Kathrin,
too, has only one aim: studying in Hamburg. After studying, their
dreams drive both of them to head for New York. Timo is the first
German solo juggler to work in New York’s “Cirque du Soleil”,
whilst Kathrin gets a foothold as a subeditor and a designer and
starts her own fashion label, “kyline”. But more than all these
things, what they have in common is their love for both Hamburg
and New York.
When Kathrin talks about Hamburg, there is no mistaking her
north German blood. She loves the old Elbe Tunnel, the Galerie
