ONK is a German abbreviation for „team orienteering with maps“. Two
athletes, linked by a rope which is 2,50 m long, have to jointly locate several
buoys. As opposed to all other contests, the buoys (except for the finishing buoy)
are not visible above water so that the course is completely hidden below the
surface. At the start, the athletes are given maps of the course. Under water, they
can use instruments to determine their distance to, and the direction of, the buoys.
To prove their having reached the buoys, the athletes have to stamp a checking
card with devices attached to the buoys. To signal their having reached the finish,
they have to pull the finishing buoy, whereupon their time will be taken. Teams are
ranked according to points awarded for reaching the buoys and for the time needed.
