Glänzend schwarzer Lackstoff, leuchtende Farben
und übertrieben breit grinsende Gesichter —
Katharina Arndt arbeitet inhaltlich wie formal mit
ihren Portraits und Stillleben an der »Oberfläche«
einer konsumorientierten Spaßgesellschaft.
Die vermeintlich illustren Motive zeigen eine
tiefgründige Beschäftigung mit unserer Spezies.
Vortäuschung falscher Tatsachen ist Kern der
Motive. Sieht man sich beispielsweise das Bild
»100% Polyester« an, so taucht man in eine Welt
mondäner Posen, opulenter Muster und floral
geschmückter Seide ab und erkennt erst auf den
zweiten Blick den aristokratischen Bluff, denn es
ist doch einfach nur Polyester, Made in China —
Billigware mit Kippe und Badeschlappen. Schöne
»Masche«!
Ihre einnehmenden Arbeiten schaffen es, dass
wir über unsere eigenen Unarten und Schwächen
schmunzeln. Mit sparsamen Strichen bringt
Katharina Arndt die Eigenheiten, die Ecken und
Kanten ihrer Charaktere zur Geltung. Humanistische
Studien über Kultur, Persönlichkeit, Geschlecht
und Statussymbole werden in skurriler,
artifizieller und selbstbewusster Art von Arndt mit
Lackstiften auf PVC-Folie, auf Lackpapier, Acrylglas
oder in Neons festgehalten.
So entsteht ein Stil, der die Welt des Konsums
und der Medien genauso überzogen widerspiegelt,
wie er eben ist. In der Ausstellung »Never not
pretending« bekommen Fake und Augenwischerei
zwischen überladenen floralen Jugendstilkacheln
ihre Bühne und zeigen uns wer wir sind,
wer wir sein wollen und was wir am Ende eigentlich
noch glauben können.
Ihre Wege führten Arndt von der HBK Braunschweig,
wo Sie 2006 ihren Meisterschülertitel bei
John Armleder erwarb, nach Berlin und Barcelona,
wo sie lebt und arbeitet.
Shiny black backgrounds, luminous colours
and faces expressing excessively broad grins —
Katharina Arndt‘s portraits and still lifes, although
formal in appearance, deal with the superficiality
inherent in a consumer driven society, and its inexhaustible
quest for »fun« .
The seemingly illustrious images show a deep
seated preoccupation with humankind. Sham
affectation and misleading narratives are present
throughout the images. If one looks at the
image, »100% Polyester«, for example, one is drawn
into a world of glamorous poses against sumptuous
floral or patterned backgrounds. It is only
when one looks again that the facade fades and
one is reminded that it is simply Polyester, made in
China — cheap goods, fag and slippers. An enticing
web of delusion.
Her engaging works manage to bring a smile
as we‘re reminded of our own questionable habits
and weaknesses. Working economically with
her lines, Katharina Arndt portrays her characters,
with all their characteristics to life, warts and all.
They are humanistic studies, addressing culture
personality, gender and status. Arndt‘s images
are brought confidently to life in a surreal and simulated
style, utilising paint markers on PVC sheeting
as well as lacquered paper, acrylic glass or
in neon.
The resulting images reflect the world of
consumption and in turn the media, in the same
exaggerated style they purvey themselves. In the
exhibition, »Never not pretending«, we are confronted
with artificiality, offered a stage in the form
of overladen art nouveau tiles. They present us
with questions like, who we are, who we want to be
and what can finally be believed at all.
Her journey has taken her from the Braunschweig
university of art, (HBK), where she completed her
MA under the guidance of John Armleder, to Berlin
and Barcelona, where she lives and works.
