The Threat of Cyber Terrorism –
How terrorists and extremists use
the internet for their purposes
Cyber space and terrorism have converged
in the past twenty odd years thus making
cyberterrorism an alarming phenomenon
that comes in many ways. Connections
between terrorism and information warfare
target elements of the critical information
structure of societies. Islamists have
shown dangering hacking activities in the
last ten years, attacking societies vulnerable
infrastructure like energy plants, water
supply. Online recruitment through social
media has become a serious threat. The
seminar looks at the activity patterns of
terrorists in cyberspace. It discusses ways
to fight these attacks in a virtual battlefield
beyond boundaries on national and
international levels. Furthermore, it looks
at the possible impact of cyberattacks
with an underlying terrorist motivation
on political attitudes and the rise of right
wing parties in liberal societies.
