Over the centuries, more than 6000 fruit varieties have been developed
throughout Europe. Today, extensive orchards with high trunks is a
counter-model to the monoculture of plantation farming. The absence of
pesticides and synthetic fertilisers also preserves the richness of flora and
fauna: meadow orchards can be home to 2000 to 5000 animal species.
