Welcome to your local magazine
Dear neighbours
Welcome to the Christmas and New Year edition
of LoveEast.
This one's a little different in that it's fatter, with
a subly different look (perfect bound to use the
printing term), and has an increased circulation to
reach even more East Londoners over the festive
season. There will be no LoveEast in January (I'm
having a break – phew!) so this one's to keep in
your hand, handbag or manbag until February.
There are lots of new articles to enjoy. There's the
Big Fat LoveEast History Quiz of the Year on p42
(thank you Stephen Selby), plus some super smart
Christmas creative ideas for the kids from the
amazing Angie Gough (p10). There are shopping
pages on p24 (really, why would you go anywhere
else?), a showcase of the fantastic Urban Makers
East craft market (p28), lots of What's On pages (8,
20- 23), plus festive food and drink (p36-41).
There are some great interviews with local
business people, too. So if you're looking for
tuition for the kids (p14), or a new school (p15),
floor restoration (p30), handcrafted furniture
(p32) – or a new tattoo (p44) it's all here.
Wishing you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy
New Year.
East life
She's behind you!
Isabelle Gerretsen meets Sharon D Clarke, Hackney
panto's scary fairy and star of stage and TV
Sharon D Clarke will be familiar to many of
you as a regular presence in the legendary
Christmas panto at the Hackney Empire. It's
the fifth time she's taken part and this year she
is the dark fairy Carabosse in Sleeping Beauty.
"The Hackney Empire is my second home," she
says. “I love doing the pantomime with such
an eclectic, talented, glorious group of people.
They are like family.”
One member of this theatrical tight-knit group
really is family. Susie McKenna, who writes and
directs the pantomime each year, is Sharon's
wife – they married on the Hackney Empire
stage in 2008.
Picture: Carabosse (Sharon D Clarke) looms over Princess Tahlia (Sleeping Beauty, played by Alexia Khadime)
East life
Every time she performs at the theatre she's
reminded of what she loves most about London:
the diversity. “When I starred in Mother Goose, I
saw a woman wearing a hijab with her kids, sitting
next to an old Jamaican couple who sat near a
Chinese couple, all with their heads thrown back,
laughing at the same time,” she recalls.
She feels extremely lucky to have played such
an eclectic range of roles both on television and
theatre. “I go where the experiences will take me.
I want to do work which stretches and challenges
me, as well as roles which are fun,” she tells me.
Last year she appeared as Nurse in Romeo and
Juliet as well as starring in the musicals We Will
Rock You and Ghost. Her performance in Ma
Rainey’s Black Bottom at the National Theatre
this year was highly acclaimed. She fell in love
with August Wilson’s character when, as a young
actress, she saw Carol Woods play the role 20
years ago.
Despite her success on stage, Sharon is most
widely known for playing consultant Lola Griffin on
Holby City. People regularly come up to her in the
street. “They ask me if I’m still acting,” she laughs.
“When they no longer see you on telly all the time,
they assume you’re not working.
Holby City cast her into limelight, but Sharon says
that deep down she remains a theatre performer.
“I love the energy exchange between the audience
and a performer.” That connection brings her
back to the Hackney Empire stage year after year.
What makes you most proud?
Seeing so many different creeds, colours,
and ages, the diversity of the Hackney Empire
panto audience.
Where do you hang out in East London?
Hackney Empire, Stage 3 & YumYum's.
Best coffee in these parts?
Don't do coffee. So it's the King Creole Rum
Slushy in Stage 3.
Best restaurant?
YumYum's.
How has the area changed?
My second home, (the Empire) is where my
mum and dad use to go dancing, then where
my dad played bingo. My dad passed 21
years ago. I think he would marvel at the way
Hackney is changing, with all the coffee shops
and bars. The rise of the house prices – some
of the young people who attend the Artistic
Development Programme at the Empire have
had their families moved out of Hackney to
Luton which is a real shame. Many artists can't
afford to live in Hackney any more. However,
gentrification and regeneration are always
doing battle in London and it's great to see a
thriving evening economy in the area.
Anything you would change?
Do away with 11pm meters, back to 6.30pm
please, and a Nando's in Mare Street.
#kickupthearts this
Christmas
Being creative with the kids doesn't have to
be heavy on the wallet, writes Angie Gough
10 LOVEEAST

Arts
I do love when the festive
season rolls around but, oh
lordy, the consumption levels
send me over the edge. The kids
can’t cope with all the stuff they
get and this year I’m keeping it
really simple with one big gift –
something they can wear and
something to read.
With wishes of a simpler
Christmas in mind, I’ve got some
cracking little giftables that you
and the kids you love can make
together without dipping into
your pockets. All you need is
items you can forage or dig
out of your recycling bin, a little
paint and some imagination.
Pine cone garland (see cover)
You will need: string, pine cones,
paint, glue and glitter (optional).
Step 1: Go to the park and
collect pine cones (Epping
Forest is epic but if you don’t
fancy a trek, there’s a guy on
Ridley Road Market – in front of
Mister Donut – who’ll sell you a
full bag of cones for a couple of
quid. You’re welcome ;))
Step 2: Paint the pine cones
as you please. You can use
paintbrushes, but straight up
dipping and finger painting is
a lot of fun. Add glitter, pom
poms, teeny rolled up tissue
paper or tinfoil balls.
Step 3: Allow to dry, then twist
your colourful cones at intervals
around the string.
Voila! A gorgeous garland you
can use year after year.
Bum prints
I’ve nicked this idea from
Hackney’s brilliant lostmy.name
blog, brought to you by the
super creative people behind
those personalised Lost My
Name books (a magical gift
for little ones if you happen
to be stuck for ideas). It was
a highlight of of our artyfarty
endeavours this year and we’re
rolling it out again this holiday
season.
You will need: paper (any kind –
even newspaper will do), paint,
paintbrush (optional), marker
pen. A bum.
Step 1: Whip off your baby’s
nappy and clean that bum bum.
Step 2:. Cover bum cheeks in
paint (you can do this with a
brush OR squeeze some paint
onto a paper plate or inside of
an old cereal box or whatever
and dip the baby for double the
delight).
Step 3: Plonk baby onto paper.
Bum side down of course.
Repeat.
Step 4: Remove baby. Possibly
to the bath ;)
Step 5: When the prints are dry,
add smiley angel faces, kissing
reindeer, an elephant trunk, or
whatever else you dream up.
Step 6: Cut them out, pop in
a frame or mount on some
coloured card.
Hang on wall or send to
grandma. Oh! Be sure to take
photos of this experience
and keep for the 18th / 21st /
wedding party.
Thumb-print snowmen
Coloured card and white paint work great for this,
but go crazy with coloured snowmen on white
if you fancy. Simply pop some paint onto a jar
lid or saucer, let the kids dip their fingers and fill
the page with prints. Thumbs work great for the
body, index finger for the head, but hey, don’t be
afraid to mix it up – the best snowmen come in all
shapes ’n’ sizes.
Add coloured paper shapes for noses / hats /
scarves and use a sharpie or any old marker for
the eyes, mouth, buttons. If you’re more of a
penguin person, or fancy a robin redbreast, take a
look at my Pinterest for more ideas.
DIY (design-it-yourself) wrapping paper
Got a lot of kids’ artwork you need to recycle?
Spare their feelings and instead of chucking it
in the bin when they’re not looking, use it as
wrapping paper! Simples.
If you want to spend quality time or just need to
buy yourself some, set the kiddos up with some
newspaper, leftover wrapping paper, old scraps
and a load of paint and let ‘em rip. Add some loo
roll inserts, empty bottles and jar lids for printing
with, some Washi tape for painting over and
ripping off, and some glitter and stickers if you
have them handy.
Education
LoveEast talked
to Hackney-based
Manning's Tutors
who are providing
professional and
affordable tuition at
11+, GCSE and
A level
Making the
grades
Johnny Manning, founder of Manning's Tutors
Advertorial
Johnny Manning heads up a new
breed of young, enthusiastic,
and highly vetted tutors who are
aiming to re-engage students in
learning... with great results.
What makes you different?
Students who enjoy their
lessons will learn far more than
those who find it a drag. Our
company is unique in finding
young, approachable tutors who
combine enthusiasm for their
subjects with contemporary
information and methods.
Manning’s specialises in
recruiting tutors who are
either recently qualified or
still in higher education. The
majority are graduates of UCL,
King’s College, LSE or Imperial
College London – some of the
top universities in the world. By
choosing to study their subject
at university, they are not only
extremely knowledgeable in
14 LOVEEAST
that field but are infectiously
passionate about it – key to
helping their pupils engage
and succeed in that subject.
How do you stand out from
other agencies?
The majority of agencies
entering the market in the
past few years tend to be
tech start-ups offering "tuition
He's proving to be
much more than a
tutor – more a mentor.
He has helped hugely.
Carol Dean
platforms" – tutors sign
themselves up and write their
own reviews, with no quality
control from the agency. At
Manning’s, we individually
interview and select all of our
tutors, with only one in five
applicants making the grade.
We meet with our tutors
regularly and are proud to
know each one personally.
That makes us confident in
finding the perfect tutor for
each of our clients.
How do your rates compare?
We are incredibly passionate
about education and the
positive effect that private
tuition can have on a child, both
in terms of academic success
and personal growth. Because
of this we don't want tuition to
be the reserve of the wealthy, so
our rates are low compared to
other private tuition companies.
Why do you love East London?
I’ve lived all over East London
and love the community
that each neighbourhood
offers. There’s a real sense of
belonging among residents
here, with businesses and
individuals keen to help each
other in whichever way they
can. Whilst we offer our tuition
over the whole of London, we
are proud to base our offices on
Fish Island in Hackney Wick – a
truly shining example of an East
London neighbourhood.
Tuition is available in your home
or other suitable locations for
£30/hour (11+/GCSE) or £36/
hour (A level). Apply online at
Preparing for the
real world
Code, create and innovate at
Livingstone Academy, East
London's newest school,
writes Tom Stephens
Livingstone Academy East London will be open
in September 2019 for reception and year seven
students. It will be the first in a series of inclusive
and multicultural schools designed to create
a pipeline of talented young people with an
entrepreneurial mindset able to problem-solve,
code and create.
Founding father of the UK gaming industry Ian
Livingstone CBE and Aspirations Academies are
opening this brand new school that will focus on
creativity, computing and entrepreneurship.
Aspirations Academies already runs 12 successful
schools. All our primary schools have excellent
KS2 results that are above national average, and
two of our secondary schools are in the in top 20
per cent nationally.
In the future, however, excellent academic
qualifications alone won't be enough. This is why
we're challenging students not only to achieve
excellence in examinations, but in essential skills
and attributes, too, from the very start.
Every day we will provide opportunities for our
students to think creatively, solve-problems and
work in teams.
The young people emerging from our schools
will need to be able to use technology to create,
and not just to consume, if they are to be the
entrepreneurs of the future. This is why we will
teach computer science from seven years old and
a Google Chromebook will be provided for every
child to ensure 24/7 access to learning.
Unique to Livingstone Academy, students will
participate in "real world projects" – working
directly with businesses to solve real problems
facing their organisations. Learning at this exciting
new academy will be connected to the world
beyond school and focus on supporting the next
generation of London's creative workforce in
achieving their dreams.
Academy, 41-47 Commercial Road, E1 1LA.
love for fashion and knitwear goes back a long
way. Throughout her childhood Penny’s mother
knitted for her and her three siblings. Penny was
fascinated how her mother transformed a flat
piece of fabric into a three-dimensional garment.
A Hackney resident for nearly 50 years, Penny
moved here in 1970, attracted by the artistic
community. She had been teaching craft
workshops, and knitting clothes for herself and
her children, but it was when she invested in her
first knitting machine that a wealth of new
crafting options became available to her.
In 1986 she presented some pieces at
Camden Lock Market. She says: "I sold
three jumpers and made £100. I was
over the moon.”
Now with six knitting machines rattling away, a
shop in Camden and a permanent stall in the
Apple Market at Covent Garden, Penny has built a
loyal and international customer base.
Penny’s shop is at 48 Upper Walkway, The West
Yard, Camden Lock, NW1 8AF.pennyburdett.co.uk
LoveEast meets
Bob Owen of Halo
Floors – the local
masters of floor
restoration
Sanded, sealed and
delivered
Advertorial
Who is Halo Floors?
We started back in 2004,
coming from a set build and
domestic refurbishment
environment. Because of the
large concentration of beautiful
Victorian and Georgian houses
in London, as well as the
huge number of new-build
apartments, it was natural for
us to specialise in the supply
and installation of new flooring
alongside sanding and repairing
of old floors.
What's important to you?
From the start we make sure
that everyone knows exactly
what is going to happen,
what the results
will be and most
importantly, what
the costs will be.
We use only the
very best quality
products and try to
make the sometimes
chaotic process happen
with as little hassle to the client
as possible. It's all about good
communication.
Bob Owen
We work with a number of
property developers and
interior designers on larger
projects, too. It's lovely to have a
variety of clients and jobs – and
that keeps everyone fresh.
We also offer bespoke
wardrobe and cabinet building,
A shining example of Bob's work, above, and parquet perfection, below
which gives us something else
to get our teeth into. The most
important thing for us is that
every client is satisfied and
recommends Halo Floors to
others.
How about customer service?
All clients get a clear
programme of how long the job
will take and what will happen.
We agree a price and pride
ourselves in sticking to it unless
there is a problem, and
usually that will have
been flagged earlier
anyway. Whether it's a
small floor sanding job,
a large house or several
hundred square metres
of office space, I treat all
jobs the same. Clients can call
me with any concerns during
the job, or years after, and I will
always do my best to help.
Are you value for money?
Yes, because I can keep
overhead costs way below the
larger outfits and can offer a
much more personal service.
In fact on new floor supply I
usually manage to match or
even beat the prices of large
department stores. I can
also visit in person and show
samples of new floors, patch out
different stains on their old floor
and generally be at the end of
a phone for any questions they
may have. The last client sent a
lovely email. “I think I’ll leave the
rooms bare and gleaming for
ever,” she said, when asked how
the move back in was going.
What makes you stand out?
We're a friendly local team;
always striving to make the
latest job great. It's lovely to
be commended when things
go well. All people want is
for the job to be on time and
budget and not to feel that their
personal space is being taken
over in the process. It's hard
work but very rewarding.
Advertorial
Beauty by design
Daniel Rawson of Raw
Design explains how
beautiful, hand-crafted
furniture can enhance
people's lives
The ethos at Raw Design is simple. We are driven
by our passion for design and craftsmanship.
We don’t take ourselves too seriously (important
in Hackney!) but we do take good design
seriously.
Well proportioned and beautifully
made furniture enhance's peoples lives,
whether it’s a stunning centrepiece in
a beautiful room, fitted furniture that’s
tailored to a client's specific needs, or a
combination of both.
After graduating with a furniture design degree
I gained a wealth of technical and practical skills
while working as a furniture designer-maker. Five
years ago I founded the company with the sole
aim of creating beautiful furniture. I work from
my compact workshop near Victoria Park with
my colleague (also Daniel) and I handcraft a wide
variety of freestanding furniture, fitted furniture
and handmade kitchens.
I've also designed and made some unusual
pieces. A wall mirror that hides a secret door
Daniel Rawson
into a room, an industrial steel and glass fitted
wardrobe and I’m currently making six solid oak
cigar cases.
The secret to delivering a successful commission
is a combination of working closely and
listening intently to each client – from
the initial ideas consultation to the
making and finishing. Working together
throughout the whole process helps me
to achieve their vision and make ideas
come to life.
Commissioning a one-off piece is an
investment which will hold its value, especially
if it's unique. For some, the thought of bespoke
furniture can seem expensive and daunting, but
many clients have been pleasantly surprised that
I’ve been able to make a piece fit a space in their
home and keep within budget.
Taking advantage of our individual skill sets and
vast materials knowledge means we can provide
clients with a wide variety of furniture solutions
for most applications.
Fancy a change from turkey this Christmas?
Try Paradise Garage's delicious lamb recipe
36 LOVEEAST

Eating in
Paradise Garage is a modern
British restaurant on Paradise
Row, E2, founded by husband
and wife duo Robin & Sarah Gill.
Head chef Simon Woodrow has
kindly provided LoveEast with
this recipe. You can try it before
cooking it yourself by visiting the
Michelin Bib Gourmand-awarded
restaurant in Bethnal Green.
Method
Wash and peel the salsify.
Season and wrap in foil with the
remaining ingredients. Bake at
180 degrees for approx half an
hour until the salsify is tender.
For the walnut ketchup, toast
the walnuts in the oven. Slice
the shallots and garlic and
caramelise in the oil with the
herbs. Add the walnuts and
vinegar to the pan and reduce
the vinegar, then add the
Madeira and reduce. Add half
the stock and cook gently for
one hour until the walnuts have
softened and the liquid has
reduced.
...and wine to match
The combination and the
depth of so many different
flavours requires a complex
yet fresh full-bodied red.
Brunello di Montalcino would
be a perfect because of the
minty characteristic of a good
Sangiovese that goes very well
with the lamb and salsify.
Alternatively, a full-bodied
Pinot Noir from southern
Burgundy like Mercury or
Santenay. vinarius.london (see
p36 for more Christmas wine
suggestions)
Remove the herbs and blend to
a puree, adding more stock if
necessary.
Score the fat of the lamb, colour
in a pan. Roast at 180 degrees
with the shallots, garlic and
herbs. Once cooked, remove
the lamb and rest for at least
15 mins. Add the red wine to
the pan and reduce, then add
the stock and reduce to a light
sauce consistency. Season.
Pick the brussel leaves from
the stalks and blanch in boiling
salted water for 2½ mins, then
mix with the butter, lovage and
fresh walnuts. Season to taste
Put a couple of spoonfuls of
the walnut ketchup onto each
plate, then the roast salsify and
brussel tops. Carve the lamb
into slices, season and place in
the centre of the plate. Spoon
the sauce over the top.
Paradise Garage
Ingredients
For the salsify
1kg salsify
1 sprig thyme
25ml rapeseed or olive oil
Pinch demerara sugar
Thyme
Bay leaf
100g dry walnuts
100ml Madeira
100ml sherry vinegar
1litre veg or chicken stock
To finish the dish
1 whole lamb rump approx
2 cloves garlic
2 shallots, sliced
50g butter
75ml red wine
LOVEEAST DEC 2016 – JAN 2017 37

Eating in
Bacaro's Christmas
chocolate salami
Ingredients
300g best quality dark chocolate
100g butter
1 cup roasted, unsalted chopped
pistachios, slivered almonds,
chopped walnuts and chopped
hazelnuts
50g shortbread biscuits,crumbled
½ cup dried cranberries
¼ cup glacé ginger, chopped (any
dried fruit or Turkish Delight
works well)
1 tbsp Frangelico or a favourite
liqueur
½ cup icing sugar, sifted
White string
Step 1 Melt the chocolate in
a microwave or over a pan
of boiling water until melted.
Add the butter and stir to
combine until smooth. Place
the chocolate and butter in a
bowl and add the nuts, cookies,
cranberries, ginger and liqueur.
Stir to combine.
Step 2 Refrigerate for 20-30
minutes until starting to get
firm but not hard. Place a sheet
of cling film on the table and
spread the mixture out in a
rectangular shape. Gather the
edges of the cling film; roll back
and forth to form a sausage
shape. Refrigerate until firm.
Step 3 Once set, remove the
cling film. Sieve the icing sugar
on a large tray and roll the
salami in this. You can also tie
it up with a string for a more
salami-like effect. Serve in slices.
The Christmas wine guide
Vinarius bring
carefully chosen by the team here
at Vinarius to match any taste,
recipe, food or moment and to
help you all to have a very merry
Fizz
Prosecco Extra Dry Sommariva
Sommariva is a family-run
business at the heart of
the best area for prosecco
production, Conegliano-
Valdobbiadene. This prosecco
shows a very delicate perlage
(fizz) with a smooth texture
and an attractive nose with
pear, almond and white flowers
aromas. Ideal with any meal or
moment. Just add friends! Buy
it exclusively at Vinarius, £12.95
White
Grechetto IGT 2015
Giangirolami (organic)
The Giangirolami family has
been making wine in Lazio
(Italy) for more than 60 years
and since 1993 the winery has
been organically certified. Pale
gold in colour, this wine has a
very intense and interesting
bouquet and a soft palate.
and creamy finish but with
a great freshness balancing
Red
Haute Côte de Beaune Rouge
2013 Claude Nouveau.
In the UK, turkey has been
the favourite main course
for Christmas dinners since
Victorian times. This year to
match this classic medium
weight (and not very flavoured)
dish we have opted for a classic
pinot noir from a garage-style
producer in Burgundy. This
wine, in fact, is light and fragrant
with a red cherry and violet
nose and an elegant, fresh but
well-structured and tasty palate.
Particular suited to turkey with
cranberry sauce, duck, lasagne
and strong cheeses. Buy it
exclusively at Vinarius, £16.95
Sweet
Recioto della Valpolicella
Classico Sterza.
This red and luscious wine from
Veneto (Italy), made by drying
the grapes during the winter
months in special rooms, is
considered Italy’s finest dessert
wine. It's very dark in colour,
full bodied with a complex
aromas – sweet ripe fruit, an
elegant oak age and a balanced
acidity. The perfect match with
any dark chocolate desserts,
Christmas pudding or blue
cheeses (stilton, gorgonzola).
Buy it exclusively at Vinarius for
£26.45
During December Vinarius is
organising a Christmas wine
tasting where you will have the
Eating out
Pidgin
When you read what chef Dan Graham is offering,
you might well think nope, that’s not for me. I
admit that given a choice I probably wouldn’t have
ordered most of it. But ignore those inner voices
– you’ll love it.
We ate steak tartare, leek with smoked oyster,
venison with pumpkin then whisky sour ice cream
with pavlova. I can already hear you saying WTF!
Of course when you go it will be different. The
menu changes weekly using seasonal produce
and they’ve never repeated it since they opened.
To me, that’s enough of an excuse to go there for
Christmas and then again in the New Year.
What’s particularly nice is there is no way you
would ever cook like this at home; nor would
you want to. It’s intricate, beautiful looking with
delicate and delicious flavour combinations. It’s
exceptional quality.
The place is an untypical East London restaurant,
but it feels local. Like the food, it’s quiet, refined
and subtle but with proper napkins, heavy
glassware and seating.
Leeks like you've never had them before
Susan Birtwistle samples the
It's Christmas. I know, already. And what a year it's
been. I think we all deserve a treat. So Pidgin it is.
If you haven't been there already, it's a restaurant
dedicated to some seriously tasty delights.
Perfect. It's tiny, only doing 28 covers and has
recently been awarded a Michelin star.
The interior is simple and refined. You’ll be sitting
pretty close to your neighbours, but it’s OK, you
don’t have to talk to them. A little like sitting in a
front room, the warm ambiance is nice, especially
as when we went it was the coldest night of the
year so far. Also, it’s a single fixed menu of four
courses. So no choice. How nice is that?
The service is unselfconscious and delightful.
They’re excellent with any dietary requirements
and I started off with a cracking G&T. This all
combines to make quite a heady combination.
Pidgin is special, easy going and a little
intoxicating. Don’t take the kids. Keep it for the
adults you love the most.
Wellbeing
Advertorial
Karen Liebenguth gives us three simple tips to help us
cope through the stress of the coming weeks
The festive season is here and while it’s a magical
time of year, it also comes with its challenges,
particularly when we spend extended time with
our loved ones and family.
Think back to a time last Christmas when you
felt frustrated or angry with one or more family
members – often these feelings arise from
wanting something or someone to be different.
We find ourselves wondering: “What can I do for
them to change?”
One of life's most frustrating lessons is that we
can't change others, change starts with ourselves.
Wanting to change someone is an
understandable and human reaction and yet
one that is hugely disempowering and painful as
we are not in control of changing other people.
We can only change ourselves and when we do,
we can influence other people’s thinking and
behaviour.
Owning our feelings, expressing them and
imagining what’s going on for someone else
(empathy) can help us stay in charge of a
situation, stay connected to our loved ones and
find a way forward. We share a great number of
emotions and universal needs with each other
and this allows us to reconnect to ourselves and
to others.
Set an intention this Christmas and do something
different yourself. These three simple tips will help
you own your feelings and express them clearly,
which in turn will help you to navigate any rocky
moments during the festive season.
1: Become aware of your thoughts and feelings
in a difficult situation. Ask yourself, "What am I
so angry or frustrated about?", "What’s going on
for me here?", "What physical sensations am I
feeling?"
2: Express how you feel in the first person: "When
this happens, I feel..." Avoid using, "You make me
feel x, y, z" language.
3: Express what you need: "What I most need is
honesty, time to talk, understanding, support".
Fitness
Roger Love, a local personal
trainer, continues our A-Z
of fitness with...T
Tabata
Named after Dr Izumi Tabata, a
Japanese sports scientist, this is
a four-minute training method
that is great for improving your
fitness.
Falling under the heading of
HIIT (High Intensity Interval
Training), it involves eight sets of
maximum-effort intervals, with
ten seconds of rest in between.
Dr Tabata found it brought
about tremendous increases
in anaerobic (energy created
without oxygen) and aerobic
(with oxygen) fitness.
It also torches calories for hours
afterwards as it sends your
metabolism into overdrive as it
uses large amounts of oxygen
to restore your body to normal
levels.
You could do a Tabata as your
exercise routine of the day if
short of time – or add it to the
start or finish of a workout
or a run. You need to use an
48 LOVEEAST
exercise that is intense and
simple to stop and start.
Sprinting, mountain climbers,
squat jumps, jump lunges,
kettlebell swings, tuck jumps (see
below), burpees or clap pressups
(above) would be perfect.
You also need a programmable
timer that bleeps to tell you
when to start and stop without
you having to look.
A quick search for a Tabata or
interval app will sort you out.
Then, off you go – just make
sure you work as hard as you
can for the 20-second intervals.
Tuck jump
A simple and intense exercise
that works your legs and core
hard, as well as being an aerobic
challenge.
Start standing with a slight bend
in the knees. Hold your hands
out at chest height. Lower
your body quickly into a squat
position and explode upwards,
bringing your knees up towards
your chest. Feeling strong? Put a
tuck jump into your burpees.
T press-up
A push-up variation that needs
more stability in the shoulders
and chest than the normal
version and throws in an extra
core challenge, too.
Start in a normal press-up
position (on your hands and in a
straight line between head and
heels). Your feet can be wider
than normal to make things
more stable.
Do a press-up and as you come
up rotate to one side and lift
your arm up towards the ceiling.
Alternate sides.
To make it harder, hold a
dumbbell in each hand.
Legal eagle
The common
law myth
Cohabiting couples have
little or no legal protection
and must take steps to
protect themselves, writes
Kiren Dhillon
Couples who live together have been the fastest
growing family type over the past 20 years and
contrary to what many people believe, "common
law marriage" is a myth.
The Office of National Statistics confirms that
there are 3.3 million cohabiting couple families
in the UK. Many people believe it's time for
change so that cohabiting couples at the time of
separation are afforded the same legal protection
and fair outcomes as married couples.
One cohabiting couple attempting to revolutionise
our legal system is London-based Charles Keidan
and Rebecca Steinfel. They wish to form a civil
partnership – a modern social contract that does
not have the associations of marriage, but that
gives the legal protection that they and other
cohabiting couples crave.
However, unless or until that protection comes
into force, or family lawyers succeed in their
lobbying for cohabitees to have rights without any
kind of formal coupling, those living together must
take vital steps to protect themselves.
How cohabitees should protect themselves
1. Enter into a cohabitation agreement. This is a
plan that sets out the financial aspects of your
relationship, and can protect you both if the
relationship breaks down.
2. Make a declaration of trust. This is an agreement
between two or more people which sets out what
each party is entitled to in the event of a sale of
the property.
3. Make an application. A schedule one application
allows unmarried couples to make financial claims
on behalf of their children.
4. Make a will. It is essential you have a valid will
in place because, despite changes to the rules of
intestacy, cohabitees do not automatically have
rights to their partner’s estate if they die without
leaving a will.
Kiren Dhillon is a family law solicitor and
lawyers’ association. She provides sensible,
Money matters
You might be wrapped up in the
party season at the moment
but the HM Revenue & Customs
deadline of 31 January for
self-assessment tax returns
has a habit of coming around
extremely quickly.
Advertorial
Their penalties for missing
the deadline are becoming
harsher. It’s bad enough having
to pay the tax without having
horrendous penalties added
on top.
We all deserve a break over the
Christmas and New Year period,
and just imagine how smug
and relaxed you will feel if your
2015/16 tax return is completed
and out of the way.
Many people file their own
returns online, which is fine if
your affairs are straightforward.
But if there are complications or
you have a sneaking suspicion
that you may be missing out
on ways to save tax, you would
be far better to speak with an
expert.
My tax expert used to work for
HM Revenue & Customs, so
he knows exactly what to do to
help you stay on top of things
and reduce your tax bill as much
as possible.
Don't throw
money away
You'll be sure to party harder if your
tax affairs are taken care of, writes
Alan Patient
You could have an initial free
consultation with him to see if
you like his approach and then
take it from there.
Self-assessment aside, the
new year is a good time to
put financial affairs in order.
For some business people
out there operating as sole
traders it could be much more
tax effective to form a limited
company.
liability, a company may give the
impression that you are backed
working in the background
and this may open more doors
