John Harvard
The January issue of Faith & Flowers contains Averill Lovatt’s
article about her visit to Boston U.S.A. in which she says little is
known about the 17th century Englishman whose bequest
became the famous University named after him.
A lot nearer to home can be found the Harvard Chapel at
Southwark Cathedral which is well worth a visit and details John
Harvard’s life in 17th century London before he set sail to the
New World.
A high standard of floral art decorates the Cathedral which is
home to commemorations to William Shakespeare and Sam
Wanamaker being close to the Globe Theatre and also a memorial
to the young people who lost their lives in the Marchioness
Disaster on the nearby River Thames.
In 2012, eight CEFAA members from the London Branch were
recruited as designers for a Flower Festival at Southwark
Cathedral.
