Funding …
We are extremely grateful to
Yorkshire Coast BID and the
National Lottery Community
Fund, without whose
generosity this year’s festival
would not have been possible.
We are delighted to have the
support of these two
organisations to make the
festival a reality.
The Big Dig
www.bigideasbythesea.com
The Big Dig will be a TimeTeam-style community
excavation that will take place across Scarborough Old Town
during Big Ideas By The Sea. Planning is ongoing and we are
working in conjunction with Scarborough Archaeological
and Historical Society and Heritage Adventures Ltd. The
team is keen to start looking for archaeological treasures and
uncover Scarborough’s past.
As part of this event, Professor Carenza Lewis (below, left),
from the popular television series Time Team and Professor
Joann Fletcher (below, right), the leading Egyptologist
known for her awe-inspiring documentaries on Ancient
Egypt, will be joining us over the weekend. We are delighted
Sponsorship and
Friends …
As you can imagine, running a
new festival costs money, so
please consider supporting the
festival by becoming a friend or
by sponsoring an event. If you
feel you can help, please check
out details on the website or
contact the team at

to be working with two world-class archaeologists and TV
stars, and excited to have them investigating Scarborough’s
history with us.
Disability and Access
Ambitions …
Our intention is to make Big
Ideas By The Sea an annual
event so your support is greatly
appreciated. Feedback is very
important to us. It will help us
to improve our offers and to
develop a programme that
people would like to see and
hear. Get in touch with us at
info@bigideasbythesea.com.
A local signer will be supporting keynote speaker events and
where possible we will make adjustments within the room to
accommodate any disabilities. We are working to provide
content that reaches as many people as possible, however,
please let us know if there is anything we can do to improve
access and communication.

A top team …
During the last 12 months,
the festival team has grown.
We have 9 team members
working in numerous roles
and across various platforms.
As we expand there will be
opportunities to join our
wonderful team.
Social! …
We believe all festivals
should have a social side to
enjoy, to give people an
opportunity to mix, make
friends and build networks.
So, expect to see some
events planned in local pubs,
bars and coffee houses but,
of course, dependent upon
Covid-19 regulations and
restrictions. However, in
2022 expect lots of events
where people can meet and
party!
Covid-19 and
heath and safety
www.bigideasbythesea.com
As you might expect, planning for
this year has been a challenge!
However, we are determined to offer
a series of outdoor events that will
work within the government’s
Covid-19 regulations and restrictions.
All events at the Grand Hotel will have NHS track and
trace system in place to ensure all visitors feel safe and
secure. Government guidelines and event host location
guidelines will be strictly followed to ensure the safety of
staff, volunteers and the public. Your safety is of the utmost
importance to Big Ideas By The Sea.
Big ideas in small places -
the festival fringe
Our team of producers are chatting to lots of pubs, bars and
cafes. We have some exciting plans, so stay tuned as we will
publish a programme of events and activities very soon.
Supporting the
Community
Community outreach and engagement is at the heart of all
our events. We are looking to work with as many groups as
possible. All money and profits will go towards a wide range
of community-led projects, events and to provide access to
the festival via free tickets and transportation.
Experiences …
We are planning to arrange a
series of exciting and
engrossing experiences, and
these will be announced in
the coming weeks.

Krash Labs …
We are delighted to have the
support of Anglo American not
only for the Big Dig, but also
for Krash Labs. We are
working with Krash Labs to
develop their 3D Minecraft
model of Scarborough and to
create and bury archaeological
finds in the model!
Social Media
You can follow us on Facebook. Here we can communicate
quickly with everyone and share festival news. We are keen
to promote the festival through social media platforms and
we would appreciate you sharing content whenever and
wherever you can. We want to build an audience not only
within Scarborough, but across the region and beyond. We
already have some international subscribers, and we are so
glad to see that our messages and ideas are travelling
globally.

Finally
We will have more news about
this exciting event in future
newsletters.
Volunteers …
All festival events require
volunteers to make them
successful. If you feel you could
help us to make this festival a
success and inspire the next
generation, please email the
team. From collecting tickets
to directing people from site to
site there are roles to fill.
Please keep in contact, tell us what you think, share your
experiences and say hello when you see the team over the
festival weekend. We want to create a great festival, to have
fun, to share ideas and to make friends.
