I am honored to serve my community 

as President of the Lockport Chamber of 

Commerce. I have been a board member 

on the Chamber since August 2014 and began 

my role as president in January 2017. I 

am also a local business owner at Likar Insurance 

Agency, and I am very involved with LAGHS, our local 

history group. In addition, I volunteer civically as much 

as possible. As a result, I am very aware of the challenges 

faced on an everyday basis by businesses and non-profit 

groups, as well as those of the consumer. 

The goal of the Lockport Chamber of Commerce and its 

board is to support and advance the business community 

in the Lockport area. We are fortunate to have Lisa Kairis 

as our Executive Director for the Chamber. She works the 

front line on a daily basis, meeting the needs of local businesses, 

not for profits, local government and the residents 

through the many resources and connections available 

through the Lockport Chamber. No one person, business 

or organization should feel like they have to meet life’s 

challenges alone. At the Chamber, you will find resources 

to achieve each of your goals. We are here to help. 

One exciting development for the Chamber in 2017 is 

our new location. We are now working out of a beautiful 

office on the 3rd floor of Central Square, in the same 

building as the city offices. This location makes us more 

accessible to the public, has more available parking and is 

easy to visit while you are taking care of other business in 

Central Square. 

In addition, this year the Chamber has completely remodeled 

its website to make it more user friendly and give the 

members and visitors a more versatile experience. Please

Finally, as you read this community guide, please remember 

to Support Local. Getting involved is the best way 

to have an impact on your community. Finding a way 

to spend our dollars and our time where we live insures 

Lockport will continue to be a healthy, growing city. If you

The City of Lockport is governed by a Mayor, City Clerk, Treasurer and an eight-member City Council - two 

council members (alderpersons) elected to each of the city’s four wards. All elected officials serve four-year

Facts and history of township government: 

Government 

• It is the eldest form of government, which began in North 

America in 1636. 

• Early Americans wanted to have a direct voice in this 

type of grassroots government. 

• They began Annual Town Meetings to discuss important 

issues and establish laws. Today townships continue to 

hold Annual Town Meetings on the second Tuesday in 

April. 

• Illinois began township government in 1849, today 85 of 

102 counties in Illinois operate under township government. 

• In many rural areas, townships are the only form of government 

available to provide social services and road 

maintenance. 

• In Illinois, townships are required to provide three main 

functions: General Assistance, Property Assessment and 

Road & Bridge Maintenance. 

• Besides the three mandated services, townships can provide 

other services and develop programs to meet their 

residents’ needs that might include: Senior Citizens services, 

Disabled citizens services, Youth services, Health 

services, Relief services, Emergency services, Environmental 

services, Animal services, and Educational and 

Recreational services.

Lockport History 

Established as the headquarters of the Illinois & 

Michigan Canal in 1836, Lockport lies nestled in the 

Des Plaines River Valley. The canal fueled the growth of 

City of Chicago, the Midwest region and the nation. 

Working to complete the I&M Canal, Chief Engineer William 

Gooding realized that the site of present-day Lockport, 

which is 40 feet higher than Joliet, had great waterpower 

potential. In its early days Lockport thrived as the 

canal’s headquarters and as an agricultural processing 

center. In its heyday, 

Lockport saw the construction of dozens of flour mills, 

grain warehouses and boatyards. As the first navigable 

link between the Great Lakes region and the Mississippi 

River, the canal played an enormous role in the economic 

growth of Illinois and the Midwest. The arrival of the Chicago 

and Alton Railroad in 1858 was the catalyst for even 

more growth. 

Today you can tour this historic area by foot, bicycle or car. 

Through the extensive efforts of the community, its government 

and various associations, you will see everything 

from the simple cottages of the past canal workers to the 

cream-colored limestone architectural works such as the 

Gaylord and Norton buildings, appearing just as they did 

in the 1800’s. 

The importance of the Illinois & Michigan Canal and Lockport 

to the economic vitality of Illinois cannot be overstated. 

As a direct waterway link between the Great Lakes and 

the Mississippi River, the canal cemented Chicago’s dominance 

over St. Louis as the center of Midwestern trade and 

thereby, Lockport’s legacy as the “city that made Chicago 

famous.” 

Since the days of shipping on the canal, Lockport has blossomed. 

While remaining picturesque, Lockport has progressed 

to become a city of the future while still embracing 

its rich past. A combination of retail stores and restaurants, 

light and medium industry, and an abundance of activities, 

events and celebrations are the new attractions in this dynamic 

community. Lockport truly is a city of historic pride 

with goals that will create an even brighter future.

LTHS RANKS IN THE TOP 9 PERCENT of all high schools 

in the nation, according to the Washington Post, which 

ranks schools for effectively preparing students for college. 

The district serves about 3,700 students from the communities 

of Crest Hill, Fairmont, Homer Glen, Lockport, 

Homer Township, and Lockport Township. 

LTHS has two campuses for one high school. Central 

Campus opened in 1910 and today serves freshman 

students. East Campus, which opened in 1964, serves 

sophomores, juniors, and seniors. 

LTHS is known for its commitment to academics, activities 

and athletics and the achievement of its students in 

all three areas. An extensive curriculum and an experienced 

faculty provide the finest academic opportunities 

for all students. 

A recent addition to East Campus, along with the technological 

upgrades that followed, gives students an unparalleled 

opportunity to utilize the most cutting-edge 

technology available. 

This mix of historic significance and futuristic technology 

that students are exposed to at our campuses gives 

them a unique advantage not available in other districts: 

two distinct buildings with the same goal of creating a 

nurturing and challenging environment in which all students 

achieve success. 

Thanks to the generosity of CITGO, Lockport Township 

High School opened the first STEM Innovative 4D Laboratory 

in the state. The CITGO Innovation and Learning Lab 

is a place where students, teachers, and the CITGO Lemont 

community are able to access state-of-the-art STEM 

resources and technology to support student learning 

and expose students to careers in the STEM fields.

There are countless recreational opportunities 

in Lockport that are available year-round. Many 

of these opportunities are available through the Lockport 

Township Park District, which provides park areas and programs 

in order to enrich the life of the community. 

A number of new and improved parks can be found 

throughout the area, each offering an array of recreational 

experiences that include open play and open spaces, 

playgrounds, areas for sports, trails for outdoor fitness, 

space for games like horseshoes and volleyball, pavilions 

for picnics or parties, spray parks, and handicap access. 

The park district maintains about 38 parks, totaling almost 

950 acres. 

There are many other recreational opportunities besides 

parks. Golf courses in Lockport and the surrounding area 

offer championship designed golf courses for the avid or 

amateur golfer. Other facilities offer indoor/outdoor tennis 

and racquetball/wallyball courts, while fitness centers 

offer group classes as well as cardiovascular machines 

and weights. Lockport also boasts several aquatic facilities 

ranging from lap pools to waterslides and zero-depth 

entry, making them terrific spots for any age. A local skate 

park boasts numerous pieces of equipment designed to 

challenge all levels of skaters. 

The Canyons Disc Golf Course, located in scenic Dellwood 

Park at the end of Dell Park Ave off State Street 

in Lockport, is host to 27 baskets throughout the park. 

It has been said that every “hole” is a signature basket 

with breathtaking natural backdrops from flowing water, 

rock formations, bridges to throwing from steep terrain 

(slope: 0% to 12%) and so much more. It is truly one of 

the most beautiful disc courses in the area with challenges 

that even the most experienced disc golfer will find 

exhilarating. The composite course features three skill 

levels (red, white and blue), 27 concrete tee pads (white 

course), six water hazards, and a practice area.

Disc Golf Store! Located at 309 W. Dell Park Avenue and 

open Tuesday-Sunday from 10:00am to 6:00pm. Closed

The Lockport Township Park District also offers a huge variety
