Home Health vs. Home Care
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, nearly
55 million Americans will be age 65 or older in
just three years. Most of these individuals will
be unable to care for themselves at some point
without assistance, and almost all want to age
in place.
Aging in place usually means that in-home
care service is used to assist individuals with
their activities of daily living. Home care,
however, is not the same as home health care,
and the payer sources are very different.
Whereas home health is primarily physicianordered
skilled care that is paid for by Medicare
following a hospitalization, home care is typically
a non-skilled service that provides basic
personal support to individuals in their own
home. It serves as an alternative or may help
delay having to move into a nursing home.
Home care aides provide assistance with
activities such as bathing, grooming, dressing,
meal preparation and eating, transportation
to appointments, errand-running, and light
housekeeping.
The cost of home care is not covered by
Medicare or through traditional health insurance.
Instead, home care is funded by families,
long-term care policies, Veteran’s Administrations
programs, or through Medicaid Waiver
programs designed to help older adults and
individuals with physical and intellectual disabilities
receive services in the community.
