Each entry has been checked for its contents, to place it in the most
useful subgrouping(s). A large number of serials specializing in English
-
and French Canadian literature have been checked. Articles have also been
found in some foreign periodicals. Theses are included only if they could
be checked for their contents by this author.
It was, a pleasant surprise to find such a wealth of material, even
though the scope of coverage was so restricted. It was, therefore, decided
to exclude items that were too short to prove of much value to students or
researchers.
Another problem arose in deciding who was Canadian. There have been
poets who touched down briefly in Canada, and those who came and stayed
longer. The final criteria in most cases was the York University
Libraries' and Toronto's Metro Central Library's classification schemes.
If their cataloguers considered them Canadian, they were included.
Many thanks must be given: to the students who helped me organize the
original file; the York University Libraries Sabbatical Committee who
granted me the time to work on this project; the York SSHRC and Glendon
Minor research Committee who supplied the finances for the research and
