Elmo Hagelberger, BSEE, Huntsville, OH,<br />

August 28, 2006. While at <strong>Northern</strong>, Elmo was<br />

a member <strong>of</strong> the IEEE-student chapter <strong>and</strong><br />

Sigma Pi fraternity. He retired from the U.S.<br />

Air Force-WPAFB after 32 years <strong>of</strong> service as<br />

a production engineer. He was preceded in<br />

death by his wife, Eileen (Reed), BA ’32.<br />

Warren Martens, BSPh, Walnut Creek,<br />

CA, August 5, 2008. While at <strong>Northern</strong>,<br />

he was a member <strong>of</strong> Kappa Psi fraternity.<br />

A graduate <strong>of</strong> the Naval Academy at<br />

Annapolis, Warren was a proud veteran<br />

<strong>of</strong> World War II. After the war, Warren<br />

went on to enjoy a 27-year career with<br />

Upjohn Pharmaceutical Company. His<br />

memberships included American Vets,<br />

Kiwanis Club <strong>of</strong> Rossmoor, United States<br />

Power Squadron (founder <strong>of</strong> the Diablo<br />

Chapter), <strong>and</strong> the VFW. Warren was<br />

preceded in death by his wife, Phyllis.<br />

Doris (Clark) Ayres, BSEd, Van Wert, OH,<br />

September 13, 2008. While at <strong>Northern</strong>,<br />

Doris was a member <strong>of</strong> Theta Phi Delta. The<br />

youngest <strong>of</strong> nine children, Doris was a native <strong>of</strong><br />

Alger, OH. Throughout her career in education,<br />

Doris was a teacher for Upper S<strong>and</strong>usky,<br />

Harrod, <strong>and</strong> Lincoln Junior High Schools. She<br />

is survived by her family <strong>and</strong> friends.<br />

August 30, 2007. A retired attorney,<br />

George was a member <strong>of</strong> the Fairfield<br />

County Bar Association, <strong>Ohio</strong> State Bar<br />

Association <strong>and</strong> VFW Post 1380. He is<br />

survived by his wife, Dollie.<br />

MS, July 18, 2008. While at <strong>Northern</strong>, Leona<br />

was a member <strong>of</strong> Alpha Xi Delta, Pi Kappa<br />

Delta, The <strong>Northern</strong> Review <strong>and</strong> the Debate<br />

team. After graduating from <strong>Northern</strong>, Leona<br />

went on to receive a master’s degree from<br />

V<strong>and</strong>erbilt <strong>University</strong>. A retired teacher,<br />

Leona was a member <strong>of</strong> Alpha Delta Kappa,<br />

Br<strong>and</strong>on United Methodist Church, Colonial<br />

Dames <strong>and</strong> the Daughters <strong>of</strong> the American<br />

Revolution. Leona was preceded in death by<br />

her husb<strong>and</strong>, Robert.<br />

Ralph Walter, BSEE, North East, PA,<br />

September 2, 2008. While at <strong>Northern</strong>,<br />

Ralph was a member <strong>of</strong> the IEEE-student<br />

chapter. After graduation, Ralph went<br />

on to spend two years in the U.S. Navy,<br />

<strong>and</strong> he enjoyed a 36-year career with the<br />

Locomotive Division <strong>of</strong> General Electric as<br />

an electrical engineer. His memberships<br />

included Baker Creek Watershed<br />

Association, North East Cultural Center,<br />

North East Historical Society, North East<br />

School Board <strong>and</strong> Park United Methodist<br />

Church. Ralph is survived by his wife,<br />

Ruthanna (Vannorsdall), BA ’44.<br />

December 24, 2007. After graduating<br />

from <strong>Northern</strong>, Hiram went on to attend<br />

Garrett Biblical Institute. A retired minister,<br />

Hiram is survived by his wife, Florence.<br />

Chapel, FL, February 6, 2008. While at<br />

<strong>Northern</strong>, Carmen was a member <strong>of</strong> Theta<br />

Phi Delta. A native <strong>of</strong> Havana, Cuba,<br />

Carmen is survived by her husb<strong>and</strong>, James.<br />

James Walters, BA, BSPh, Sebring, FL,<br />

May 23, 2008. A veteran <strong>of</strong> World War II,<br />

James enjoyed a career as a medical doctor.<br />

He was a member <strong>of</strong> the Elks <strong>and</strong> the board<br />

<strong>of</strong> supervisors at Sun ’n Lakes Country Club.<br />

He served as an elder, finance committee<br />

member <strong>and</strong> Sunday-school teacher at First<br />

Presbyterian Church in Sebring, FL. James<br />

is survived by his wife, Joanne.<br />

Richard Welton, BSEd, Clevel<strong>and</strong>, OH,<br />

July 26, 2008. A veteran <strong>of</strong> the U.S. Army<br />

during World War II, Richard retired after<br />

30-year career as a teacher <strong>and</strong> coach.<br />

During his retirement, Richard worked as<br />

a l<strong>and</strong>scaper from April to November. He<br />

is survived by his wife, Ruth.<br />

Norbert Davis, BSEd, Lima, OH,<br />

September 15, 2008. A veteran <strong>of</strong> the<br />

U.S. Navy during World War II, Norbert<br />

enjoyed a 46-year career with the Lima<br />

City Board <strong>of</strong> Education. He was heavily<br />

involved in many organizations, including<br />

Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite Valley <strong>of</strong><br />

Dayton, Ancient Order <strong>of</strong> Nobles <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Mystic Shrine, Benevolent & Protective<br />

Order <strong>of</strong> Elks Lodge 54, High 12 Club<br />

590, Lima Shrine Club, Lodge 205 F &<br />

AM, Song Masters Choral Group, <strong>and</strong><br />

Trinity United Methodist Church. He was<br />

a member <strong>of</strong> the National Education <strong>and</strong><br />

<strong>Ohio</strong> Education Associations. Norbert<br />

was preceded in death by his first wife,<br />

June, <strong>and</strong> his second wife, Marcella.<br />

William “Bill” Derry, BSPh, Hon. D.’01,<br />

Caldwell, ID, September 12, 2008. While at<br />

<strong>Northern</strong>, Bill was a member <strong>of</strong> chorus, Sigma<br />

Phi Epsilon fraternity <strong>and</strong> the football <strong>and</strong><br />

wrestling teams. After serving with the Army<br />

Air Corps during World War II, Bill went on to<br />

graduate from <strong>Northern</strong> <strong>and</strong> work for Cheffy<br />

Drugs. He <strong>and</strong> his wife, Rondalee, who<br />

survives, opened Derry Drugs in 1953 <strong>and</strong><br />

ultimately retired in 1990. His memberships<br />

included the Board <strong>of</strong> the Van Wert County<br />

Foundation, First United Methodist Church,<br />

Van Wert Elks Club, <strong>and</strong> Van Wert Rotary<br />

Club. He served in leadership roles for<br />

several organizations, including the<br />

Republican Party, <strong>Ohio</strong> State Pharmaceutical<br />

Association, Van Wert Heart Association,<br />

<strong>and</strong> Van Wert Junior Achievement. Bill was<br />

inducted into the Ft. Wayne Area Junior<br />

Achievement Hall <strong>of</strong> Fame <strong>and</strong> <strong>Ohio</strong> Senior<br />

Citizens Hall <strong>of</strong> Fame.<br />

Harry Frederick, JD, Canfield, OH, August<br />

10, 2008. After serving in the U.S. Navy, he<br />

received three battle stars for outst<strong>and</strong>ing<br />

service <strong>and</strong> went on to attend <strong>Ohio</strong> <strong>Northern</strong>.<br />

While at <strong>Northern</strong>, Harry was a member <strong>of</strong><br />

the football team <strong>and</strong> Delta Sigma Phi. He<br />

began his pr<strong>of</strong>essional career in the insurance<br />

industry <strong>and</strong> ultimately retired as a partner<br />

with Brennan, Frederick, Vouros & Black. His<br />

memberships included Canfield Christian<br />

Church, Canfield Kiwanis Club, Canfield Swim<br />

Club, Canfield War Vets Museum, Mahoning<br />

County Bar Association, <strong>and</strong> <strong>Ohio</strong> State Bar<br />

Association. Harry was preceded in death by<br />

his wife, Ellen.<br />

Bernard Retterer, BSEE, Severna Park,<br />

MD, January 12, 2008. While at <strong>Northern</strong>,<br />

Bernard was a member <strong>of</strong> the basketball<br />

team <strong>and</strong> the IEEE-student chapter. He<br />

retired from ARINC Research Inc., after<br />

25 years <strong>of</strong> service as a vice president <strong>of</strong><br />

engineering for the communications research<br />

company. After retiring, he went on to act<br />

as a consultant for several organizations in<br />

Washington, D.C. Bernard is survived by his<br />

wife, Mary.<br />

Howard Mumma, Hon. D., Tucson, AZ,<br />

December 15, 2004. Howard was a retired<br />

minster <strong>of</strong> the United Methodist Church.<br />

Robert “Bob” Tschanz, BSCE, Celebration,<br />

FL, July 16, 2008. While at <strong>Northern</strong>, Robert was<br />

a member <strong>of</strong> the ASCE Student Chapter, Alpha<br />

Sigma Phi, <strong>and</strong> Tau Beta Phi. A veteran <strong>of</strong> the<br />

U.S. Army, Bob held several positions throughout<br />

his career, including pr<strong>of</strong>essional engineer<br />

<strong>and</strong> surveyor at Surveyors, Inc., assistant city<br />

engineer <strong>and</strong> city engineer for the city <strong>of</strong> Lima,<br />

OH, <strong>and</strong> Allen County sanitary engineer. He was<br />

affiliated with several organizations, including<br />

Allen County <strong>Men</strong>tal Health Services, the Lima<br />

Symphony, <strong>and</strong> the Rotary Boys Choir. Bob is<br />

survived by his wife, Jennie.<br />

Harold “Pete” Vermillion, BSEd,<br />

Summerfield, FL, April 11, 2008.<br />

While at <strong>Northern</strong>, Pete was a<br />

member <strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong> Religious<br />

Association Council. A veteran <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Korean <strong>and</strong> Vietnam wars, Pete was<br />

a retired United Methodist pastor <strong>of</strong><br />

the Western <strong>Ohio</strong> Conference. He<br />

served several parishes, including<br />

Christ United Methodist Church in<br />

Gainesville, Pine United Methodist<br />

Church in Fort McCoy, St. Paul’s<br />

United Methodist Church in Ocala<br />

<strong>and</strong> USAR. Pete is survived by his<br />

wife, Jane.<br />

John Works, JD, Silver Lake,<br />

OH, November 12, 2007. While<br />

at <strong>Northern</strong>, John was a member<br />

<strong>of</strong> Delta Theta Phi, Student Bar<br />

Association, Student Senate, <strong>and</strong><br />

Willis Society. John received several<br />

degrees, including a BA from Brown<br />

<strong>University</strong> <strong>and</strong> an MBA <strong>and</strong> Ph. D.<br />

from Northwestern <strong>University</strong>. A<br />

veteran <strong>of</strong> the Korean conflict, John<br />

enjoyed a long career at Duquesne<br />

<strong>University</strong> before he retired as<br />

a pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> finance from the<br />

<strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Akron. He is survived<br />

by his wife, Trudy.<br />

Donald Klein, BSME, Lima, OH,<br />

September 4, 2008. A veteran <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Marine Corps during the Korean War,<br />

Donald worked in various engineering<br />

capacities for over 35 years. He<br />

ultimately retired from AlliedSignal<br />

Foundation, Inc., where he worked<br />

as a senior manufacturing engineer.<br />

His efforts in the automotive product<br />

development area resulted in several<br />

patents. Donald is survived by his<br />

wife, Joan (Meier), BSEd ’68.<br />

Robert C. Bolon, 85, died Nov.<br />

16, 2008, in Clevel<strong>and</strong>.<br />

He served as president <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Hillier Family Foundation board,<br />

which supports the Metzger Nature<br />

Center, <strong>ONU</strong>’s nature center in<br />

Tuscarawas County. The Robert<br />

C. Bolon Academic Field Study<br />

Center, the 8,000-square-foot<br />

facility at the Nature Center, is<br />

named in his honor.<br />

He is survived by his wife <strong>of</strong><br />

60 years, Betty L. (Martin) Bolon; a<br />

son, Thomas C. Bolon; a daughter,<br />

Laura A. Schaffter; <strong>and</strong> four<br />

gr<strong>and</strong>children.<br />

A graduate <strong>of</strong> The <strong>Ohio</strong> State<br />

<strong>University</strong>, he was a retired executive from J.C. Penny Company Inc. He<br />

was a U.S. Army veteran <strong>of</strong> World War II <strong>and</strong> recipient <strong>of</strong> a purple heart.<br />
