At Sea and Ashore With the SIU<br />

ABOARD ALLIANCE CHARLESTON – AB David Denizac<br />

(left in photo above) and Joselito Be<strong>of</strong> are shown in early<br />

March painting and installing a non-skid safety walkway on<br />

the bridge deck <strong>of</strong> Maersk’s Alliance Charleston. Thanks to<br />

Bosun Terry Cowans and Chief Mate Ryan Arnold for their<br />

efforts to submit the photo to the <strong>LOG</strong>.<br />

REWARDED FOR SAFETY – Electrician James Beatty<br />

(photo at right) recently won a cash award as part <strong>of</strong><br />

Maersk Line, Limited’s ongoing program promoting shipboard<br />

and shore-side safety. According to a recap by the<br />

chief mate aboard the Baldomero Lopez, Beatty discovered<br />

that an incorrect-sized wire had been used on a lube oil<br />

heater and the protective covering was starting to deteriorate,<br />

which could have caused an injury or accident. Beatty<br />

“took it upon himself to open and inspect all <strong>of</strong> the other …<br />

heads to ensure they were correctly wired. Job well done<br />

on discovering the problem and having the initiative to take<br />

it the next step and make sure there would not be any future<br />

issues,” wrote Chief Mate David Schumacker.<br />

VISION IN CALIFORNIA – In late<br />

in Martinez, Calif. <strong>The</strong>y discussed<br />
