Your Sixth Form experience should be the most challenging, but
more importantly the most exciting two years of your school career.
We believe that the Sixth Form at Skegness Grammar School offers
outstanding opportunities combined with the supportive
environment needed to meet these challenges. Unashamedly
academic, we provide a wide range of AS and A2 courses taught by
experienced, specialist staff who provide the support and guidance
necessary to ensure success.
All students follow courses leading to A2 level and the majority move
onto Higher Education. The curriculum, whilst designed to achieve
such objectives, is also structured to provide a broadening
educational experience and to avoid excessive specialisation. It is
not geared solely to the attainment of examinable objectives.
Equally, the timetable contains recreational elements reflecting the
place of leisure in normal daily life. Nonetheless, in order that
students can cope successfully and gain full benefit from two years in
the Sixth Form at Skegness Grammar School, they must have
sufficient academic ability to meet the demands of A level work. For
this reason the general minimum requirement is:-
Six passes at GCSE (including Mathematics and English) and
including at least four B grades, together with the requirements of
the individual subjects they wish to study, which are normally at
least a grade B GCSE pass.
Where students narrowly miss these requirements we will look at
cases individually based on previous record in school or a report
from a previous school.
It is expected that most students will study three A Level subjects
and a fourth AS in Year 12. Students will choose four subjects out of
the option lines, which should ensure most combinations of subjects
are available. After appropriate consultation during the early part of
Year 11, students are asked to express their initial preference; but
final decisions will not be made until after the GCSE results are
published. However there are certain circumstances when the
school reserves the right to limit the freedom of choice which the
above system implies.
(1) A student may be advised against an unwise subject
combination, as perceived by the school, even though
he/she may appear to have a reasonable chance of attaining
the minimum grade requirements for each of the subjects
chosen.
(2) A student may be required to change the original choice
in the light of GCSE results.
(3) There may be occasions when demand for a
particular subject is so low that it is uneconomic to mount it.
which includes a study area,
café area to include a brand
new Coffee station planned
from December 2011 and an
ICT suite.
Within the Sixth Form Common
Room there will be a brand new
Coffee station serving a range
of beverages and snacks. This
will help to enhance our superb
facilities for the Sixth Form and
is planned to be up and running
from December 2011
International Adventure
Week
One of our major events is the bi-annual Adventure Week. This is a
whole week off timetable for all pupils from 7-10 and Year 12, run in
the penultimate week of the summer term. The next one will run
from Monday 9th to Friday 13th July 2012. There is an international
theme this time around and we are currently in the planning stages.
The aim is to give an experience abroad for all pupils. There will be a
range of trips for all tastes and budgets and we will give you plenty of
notice of what is on offer with at least a year to forward plan. In the
first instance a check on the passport would be a good idea; is it up to
date?
Pupils gain an awful lot from these activities such as life experience
enrichment and also raising their self confidence to try new things,
make new friends and see more of the world they will one day shape.
A Student Sixth Form Survival Guide
The most important thing to keep in mind as a Sixth Form student is using your time to it's full potential. If you
make the most of the opportunities available at SGS not only will you earn the best grades, you will have fun at
the same time!
1
2
Use Private Study well
The flexible Private Study system in the SGS Sixth Form means you can personalise
your independent work time in a way that best suits you. The Sixth Form Centre,
Greenhouse and departmental areas are all available for more informal studying
conditions, but do try to make sure you spend at least one hour a week doing
completely focused work in the library. Admittedly, working in silence is not overly
exciting, but you will see the benefits in the long term.
Remember, the more work you do at school, the more free time you have at home.
Find your own way to revise
Making pages and pages of notes may work for some people, but it certainly is not for
everyone. Try to develop your own study techniques that will help you to revise for
those all important exams. If in doubt, invest in some highlighters and coloured pens
to make your notes look as appealing as possible. A colourful, exciting page makes
revision much less boring. However, this does not mean you should spend hours
decorating your notes and neglecting the topic content as a result.
Remember, the better quality notes, homework and class work you produce, the
easier revision will be when exam time comes.
Setting The Standard for the Future
Sixth Form
Study Hard Obviously, the main reason for being part of the SGS Sixth Form is to do your best
academically in order to give you the most positive start in life. Here are some
tips for success in your studies.
3
Ask your teacher for help
Sixth Form Studies are not supposed to be easy. It is natural for there to be some
topics that take you longer to grasp than others. If you feel you need extra guidance or
you do not fully understand the homework set, simply ask your subject teacher.
Remember, the teacher would much rather you asked questions than come to the
lesson not having done the set task because you didn't understand.

Skegness Grammar
School
4
Read around the subject
Doing research yourself will increase your existing understanding of the subject and
make learning new topics a lot easier. This does not have to be boring. For those
studying English Literature it may mean reading some of the books on the Sixth Form
Reading List, for French or Spanish students it could be watching a foreign film.
Remember, the more research you do independently, the more interested you can
become in you subject. You never know, you might just discover a new favourite
book or film.
Have Fun If you do not enjoy yourself during your time at school, the pressure can easily become too
much. That is why it is so important to get involved in the activities and events happening
all around you in the SGS Sixth Form.
1
2
3
Balance your time between school work and your social life
Clearly, you should not spend all your time socialising and doing very little work, but
equally do not bury your head in your text book so much that your time in the Sixth
Form is over before you've had chance to enjoy it.
Remember, if you strike up a balance that works for you it is very possible to study
hard and still have plenty of fun, when the time is right.
Extra-curricular activities
At SGS we are very lucky to have so many facilities available to us. Whether you are a
keen footballer or netball player, an aspiring actor or musician, or you spend all your
free time painting and drawing there is a school club to suit your interest. Also there
are new opportunities in Year 13 to become Senior Prefect Head of Drama, Sport,
Music and many others, in which you can help to develop these activities further
within the school.
Remember, don't let opportunities pass by, get involved and meet new people in
the process.
Inter-house competitions
SGS has a very strong house system running through the school, with Sixth Formers
taking the leading roles in organisation and motivation. Whether you are in Lumley,
Magdelen, Newton or Tennyson, taking part in house events such as Sports Day, the
Inter-House Dance Challenge or even the House Chess Competition can be extremely
rewarding and enjoyable.
Remember, as an added incentive the more you participate in house events the
more likely you are to be chosen for that House Captain role.
