THANK YOU FOR THE POSITIvE FEEDBACK
Appreciate the constructive comments received back from people during the past week regarding
our Football Geelong media coverage. It is encouraging to recognise that when YOU know that
VOLUNTEERS are doing and presenting their best (and in their own particular styles) that it is
appreciated. Yes, as it has been pointed out to me, we will always have our ‘knockers’ as you cannot
please all the people all the time (Great man that espoused those immortal words). We try and
present the positives and will continue to do so. Again, I would ask sincerely that if people have
constructive comments and/or ideas that YOU believe would improve our presentations – give me a
call or email – would only be too pleased to hear from YOU.
WINNERS & LOSERS
After reviewing the feedback we received, last
Saturday we trialled a new format for our
‘Award Winning’ radio program of ‘WINNERS
& LOSERS’.
The continued comments made during the
week have been encouraging and so we will
continue to try out the new format. At the end
of the Match of the Day broadcast summary
we will bring you up to date with scores from
other GFL & BFL matches as they become
available.
It is here that we rely heavily on the home
clubs to ring in the scores as soon as the
seniors match is finished. If we do not get the
score, we have to then begin a tiresome and
consuming process of ringing the club or a
representative to get the score for YOU.
While we compile all the final scores we will
bring you up to date with various pieces of
local football and netball news, including
match summaries from GFL football and
vCFL LEADING GOAL KICKERS
Bendigo bank ‘A’ grade netball plus BFL
football.
AT 5.30pm we will update YOU with ALL the
scores and ladders from the GFL & BFL seniors
and reserves grade football.
We will then continue with match summaries,
including a round up of GDFL senior matches
with Eric Nicholls.
When you look at the two football leagues
and through each of the senior and U18
competitions the evenness of the seasons
competitions begin to shine through.
The other interesting fact is that there are
only THREE unbeaten sides in all of the seven
football competitions.
In the GFL, the St. Joseph’s U18 Gordon
Institute Cup side sits at 6 wins from six
rounds and is showing terrific abilities each
week to lead the competition by one game
from South Barwon.
Barwon Heads forward, Lucas Murphy has moved into the top 14 VCFL goal kickers after bagging 10
big ones last round. Murphy has kicked 46 in 8 games. Leading the goal kicking brigade throughout
the VCFL competition is D. Sheen (Cora Lynn F.C. – Ellinbank DFL) with 83 goals from 9 games.
Former Essendon AFL player, Gary Moorcroft still knows where the big sticks are with 54 goals from
7 games with Silvan in the YVMDFL – division 1. Birregurra forward, M. Whelan has 48 from 9 games
and must be pleasing for first year coach, Adam Wilkinson – former N&C player.
WORKSAFE COUNTRY
CHAMPIONSHIPS –
POOL ‘A’
A number of local football followers
have asked what the results were
in Pool ‘A’ of the recent VCFL
Interleague matches.
The four competing leagues were
Goulburn Valley, Ballarat, Ovens &
Murray and Hampden.
The final ladder saw Goulburn Valley
take out the honours with 3/3,
followed by Ovens & Murray 2/1,
Ballarat 1/2 and Hampden 0/3.
Look out Pool ‘A’, here comes the
GFL in 2009!
The ACFC will be held in Shepparton
from July 24 thru 27 with teams
representing Victoria, Western
Australia, South Australia, ACT, NSW
and AAS.
The ‘home and away’ matches will
be played on Thursday, July 24 and
Saturday and the final series to be
played on Sunday, July 27. Will keep
IT’S TOUGH AT THE TOP!
GWSP v SOUTH BARWON
The pressure for both sides begins today.
The reigning premier is finding things a little
tougher than in the past three seasons, with
injury causing quite a few headaches. Sitting
in fifth position at 5/2, South Barwon needs
to lift right across each line and spread the
load. The class of the corri9gan boys and
other experienced players can only carry you
for so long and for so far and today is when
ALL the team must pull together. GWSP is
also at 5/2 and playing confident football. The
win over Colac at the Gravesend Street oval
last Saturday was as good a win as it gets.
With the Carson boys in form and Saunders,
Jack and Chambers moving well - at the
moment – watch out Swans. On balance
the class of South Barwon will lift on this
important occasion and win.
BELL PARK v NEWTOWN
& CHILWELL
The Dragons are reeling breathing fire and
will no doubt continue against the Eagles
at Hamlyn Park. The Bell Park combination
continues to impress with strength across
each line and it is playing four consistent
quarters of footy each week. Jarrod Garth
has been a real find for Bell Park and is the
Leagues leading goal kicker with 39 goals.
And to be quite honest I don’t fancy who
will have the ability and strength at N&C
to curb the big mans current form. N&C
played a solid and impressive second half
against North Shore last Saturday and will
come out strongly. Much to the delight of
Bev (Finnemore) and Bernice (Stacey), my
two favourite canteen ladies, – Bell Park to
win easily.
thE mAN jack Grapsas
after seven rounds isn’t it great to see at least nine of the GFL clubs battling it out for a top five position. Great competition breeds great
local footy. With Leopold in ninth position on the Blood Toyota Cup ladder, the make up of the final five will be influenced by the current
top nine sides. I seem to think, (and yes I can and do about my local football), that the only probable change to the current top five will be
– St. Mary’s in and GWSP out! I just feel that as the season wears on the GWSP bigger blokes will find the going that bit tougher.
OTHER ROUND 8 MATCHES
The remaining four games should all go
according to Hoyle. St. Mary’s will visit
Windsor Park and provide a football lesson
for the Seagulls. Yes, we know that the club is
going thru a rebuilding stage, but St. Mary’s
will show no mercy against one of its ‘old
foes’. With the leadership of Cail, combined
with the tall strength of Gilligan and the
forward ability of Tim McLean, Jock will be
happy.
Colac makes the trip up the Princes Highway
all the way across town to Lara. (Can’t wait
for the Ring Road). I was disappointed with
the Lara showing against St. Mary’s last
round, but that is to the full credit of St.
Mary’s. This week will offer little difference as
Colac will rebound from its 10 point defeat to
GWSP to bounce back with vengeance. Kane
Leerson, Alex Harris and Jonathan Simpkin are
providing continual drive forward for Colac
and will enjoy the ground conditions at Mill
Road to record an impressive win.
The home ground advantage at
Burdoo Reserve will provide a
win for Grovedale over St.
Albans. The Supersaints
continue to feel confident
of making a push towards
the final five. But one thing
is missing – WINNING. With
Jeremy Larcombe (much
improved footballer), playing
well in defence and Baars and Mensch
giving the Tigers vital bite around the middle
and up forward, Grovedale will win.
In the remaining game, St. Joseph’s will hold
down second position on the ladder with
a comfortable win over Leopold. The big
interest in this match will be who, from St.
Joseph’s, will get the job on Aaron Greaves.
The ‘big fella’ will be out for a bag of goals
in order to lift his side, but the line by line
strength of St. Joseph’s on its home ground
will be too much.
BLUE EYES SELECTIONS – (Yes she is
four ahead) – St. Mary’s, Colac, GWSP,
Grovedale, St. Joseph’s and Bell Park.
GFL & BFL FOOTBALL
AND NETBALL AT
ITS BEST
The terrific season of close football
and netball across all levels of
competition continues on.
At the respective senior levels of both
codes, there are only two unbeaten
teams – BOTH in netball.
In the GFL Bendigo Bank ‘A’ Grade Cup,
St. Joseph’s continues to set the pace.
While in the BDNA it is the Drysdale
Hawks.
The GFL footy competition is a jammed
packed field as they begin to reach the
half way mark of the home and away
season. There appears (numerically
theoretic) to be an opportunity for
any of nine of the current top sides to
make the final five.
Funny things always seem to happen
in the second half of the season so
any predictions (at this stage) would
be ‘just guessing’.
The pattern maintains its momentum
in the BFL with nine of the ten sides
capable of making the top five.
The BFL commences the second round
of home and away matches today and
could well be a little more predictable.
But, I well remember Drysdale Hawks’s
effort last season, so will not venture
out on a limb just yet!
The one thing that makes it all so very
exciting is that it is country football at
its best and we are so lucky to be able
to have the right product provided to
us each week.
To all clubs – THANK YOU – keep up
the great work and the providing of
top football and netball entertainment
each week.
More wins for Netball, this time with B-Grade
getting on the winners list, and the continued
good form of our Juniors (u17 netball joined the
u14 & u16 footballers in victory) & Little League
were the rare highlights of last weekend. Senior
football’s two sides showed glimpses of good play
but were unable to sustain it for long enough to
stop Newtown having convincing wins.
It will be even more difficult against St Mary’s
today, but in welcoming the teams & their
supporters to Windsor Park we hope that being
back at home after a month away fires the
“Blue & Gold” sides to try even harder! Belated
congratulations to Daniel Milligan for his part in
the success of the Geelong Interleague team two
weeks ago.
The football & netball committees are putting
in a lot of work to try and help our club restore
pride and rebuild stocks on the courts and field.
Everyone associated with the club needs to try and
get along to at least one of the club fundraisers.
Functions include:
· Tonight - all are asked to stick around for the $20
Silver Circle Draw from 7pm (tickets available from
Pat Smith, players & committee members - get
one or more NOW)
• 5 July St. Albans game - Sponsors Visit to “The
Bush Inn”
• 12 July Leopold game - Annual Cabaret @
Dromoland House
• 13 July “SUPER SUNDAY” - celebrate the 10th
Anniversary of our GFL Championship with players
and supporters from the last spectacular 35 years
at a massive reunion at Windsor Park. Tickets are a
bargain at $25 for singles or $40 for couples.
Club Memberships are now overdue, you can click
FOOTBALL:
For all junior football information, from the
Under 12s down, check the Newtown Little
League website. The Under 16s led the way
again with 2 strong wins, while the Under
14s couldn’t match their strong opponents.
The Reserves & both Under 18s ran home
strongly for victories, with the Under 18B
side particularly impressive. Good players
across the grades were: Iain Davidson,
Damian Hoare, James Morgan, Ryan Brady,
Chris Di-Giusto, Daniel De Gois, Jackson
Davis, Levi Sands, Declan Cashin, Hayden
Thompson, Dylan McMahon, Tom Holland,
Steve Smith, Keegan Doherty, Rohan Nunan
& Jack Cameron. The Seniors started well
and continued on for a solid 4 quarter
performance. The delivery into the forward
line was better and more direct, while the
movement around the ground was much
slicker. Best players: Andrew Merriman, Tom
Gilligan & Matthew Dyer.
LARA
Lara Sporting Club Football Section welcomes
Colac to town today. The home ground
advantage the Snake Pit provides should
ensure a better result than last week’s
disappointing showing against St Marys.
Injuries should never be used as an excuse
but they can obviously contribute to poor
performances such as that one. Closter,
Elliott and Smith are not easily replaced in
a developing side so hopefully other players
can step up today if we need to cover injuries
again. Sam Clark, Leigh Hardman and Stefan
Callea were the better players in the Seniors,
while Cameron Addie, Nicholas Elliott and
Sam Lancaster played well as the Reserves
were swamped in the second half. Taylor
Reynolds, Tim McDonnell and Bradley Phillips
were in the best in the 18s unsatisfactory
display. The 16As provided a highlight,
winning by 45 points against Anglesea.
Jordan Fulton, Aaron Killey and Jordan
Kavanagh were among the good players. The
16Bs had a 33-point victory over Newcomb,
with Matthew Baker, Nicholas Sluggett and
James Donlen in the best. The 14As lost a
heartbreaker by one point to St Albans, with
Dylan Fairchild, Brenden Miller and Mitchell
Bartolo playing well. Lachlan Turner, Jake
Nailon and Wade Archer battled hard in the
14Bs 50-point loss to North Shore.
SOCIAL
COLAC
Well it wasn’t a great day for us last week, a
loss to the Roosters in a hard fought contest
created a bit of a setback for us but today as
we travel to Lara we must re group and go
out in a positive frame of mind and hopefully
we can come away with the four points.
It wasn’t much better in the netball
although we mixed results over the day
our A Grade girls took a while to get going
and unfortunately most of the damage was
done in the first half, it was a little better in
the lower grades whilst our juniors in both
netball and football are enjoying very good
seasons so far, so well done to all concerned.
Whilst on our netball girls their Hut Day was
a great success, it was a big turn out and
plenty of fun. We must congratulate the girls
who all went to the trouble to get into the
theme “A Touch of Tiger” they looked the part
and to most of our surprise were very well
behaved.
Great strategy and
design is great business.
Website Development
Next week is the big event, our Mock
Wedding, it will be the wedding of the year
and everything is in place to ensure a great
night all we need is our guests. Remember it
is a cross dress event and well some of the
local ladies clothes stores are doing great
business particularly in the larger lady sizes,
it will be interesting how many of the boys
have the fake tan on, it would be justice to let
the real girls know just how much that stuff
stinks. Make sure you order your tickets by
today we need to have numbers confirmed
for catering. It will be a ripping night so make
sure you don’t miss out.
The U/16’s and U/14’s again had good wins
against Port Fairy on Sunday, a big trip so
thanks again to all of the hard working
parents who support these boys, we
appreciate your efforts.
Congratulations again to Tom Simpkin who
played another game with the VCFL U/18
» Graphic Design
team in Canberra last week, unfortunately
they lost but Tom has another couple of
games to play so let’s hope they have a
change of fortune in the coming games.
Also to tune into all today’s action you can
GEELONG WEst st pEtERs
We welcome South Barwon today to the
Rooster Cage and hope for a great contest in
all games of football.
Over the years we have had some enthralling
contests with the Swans including a fantastic
win by our boys last year and a narrow
victory by the reigning premiers in near
freezing conditions here at West three years
ago.
Today, our boys go into the game brimming
full of confidence with some great wins in
their past two rounds against St Mary’s and
Colac away.
With several key players out of the game
last week, the seniors summoned all their
character to fight back from a 15 point deficit
at Central Reserve by quarter time to stamp
their authority on the game and stave off
a Tiger late surge to record a landmark 10
point win.
In front of a surprisingly large club
contingent, the Roosters powered their way
through the second half and put paid to a
spirited Colac fight back to record their first
win at the Tigers’ home.
Vice-captain Paul Carson again stamped his
authority on the game and led an on-ball
attack that was relentless all day in their
hunt for the footy and at the man. Livewire
forward Luke Parker, hard nut back men Rob
Chamberlain and Adam Morrow and key
utility Shane Jack were all at their best in
leading their galvanised team. Dale Carson
with 4 along with Jack (3) and slippery pocket
Rhys Burke (3) were the leaders on the
scoreboard. All of our boys will need to bring
their best game today to combat the league’s
best and we wish the Roosters the very best.
The Reserves again showed why 2008 is fast
shaping as the club’s best in that grade with
a comprehensive beating of the Tigers. Cam
gwspsc.org
Healy once again gave his all and finished as
the sides’ best along with an evergreen Pops
Kelly who slotted through a casual seven
goals. Sean Lever, Benny Rowe and a spirited
Adam Jago with a fine performance and four
majors all were at the forefront in the 118
point win to celebrate Tony Calnon’s 250th.
The under 18s ran into a tough Colac unit
who traditionally are amongst the league’s
best. Riccardi, Frangos, Timmy Wight and
Hower were our side’s best but by games’ end,
the Tigers had chalked up a morale-boosting
win.
Stilllearning, our boys have come a very long
way thus far this year and even before the
halfway point of the year has eclipsed their
win-loss from last year.
sOUth BARWON
After a loss to Joeys and then the break it was
good to return to the winners list last week. These
games against our neighbours always raise a lot of
interest resulting in our best crowd for the season
with a lot staying in the clubrooms afterwards for
the presentation of the John Nankervis Shield.
It was a good day all round for the club with
the U/18s having a huge win and the reserves
getting home in a nail biter by 5 points. The U/18B
team also had a strong win defeating Leopold
by 7 goals to remain on top of the ladder. In the
netball section the girls managed to win six of the
seven games played. The seniors won an exciting
game by 1 goal with Ainsley Corrigan once again
our best. The previous week Ainsley was named
player of the competition at the interleague
championships in Sale. The girl is “on fire”.
Luke Buckland finally pipped Mark Corrigan
for BOG in the senior football game. Luke was
outstanding in defence and this performance
followed an equally impressive performance in
the interleague competitions in Sale.First gamers
Jack Elsum and Ben Dodds showed enough to
suggest that there will be many more games for
them at this level. Congratulations to the match
committee for showing so much confidence in our
youngsters.
LETS BE SOCIAL Last Sunday’s JD Superdraw was
an outstanding success and a major fundraiser for
the club. The Swans Ladies Day will be held at the
clubrooms on Saturday 21 May during the game
against Lara. This is a fun day for all our female
supporters and will include finger food, chocolate
fountain, cocktails and champers and live music.
Great value for $30pp + $5 raffle. Fill the place up
ladies and have a great day.
June 28 is “Melbourne Cup” Night at the club.
Come along in your best racing attire and be part
of the cup crowd. There will be play money for
betting, plenty of prizes, fashions on the field etc.
For a $20 entry fee.
July 26 is Trivia Night. Always a great night that
is normally attended by intellectuals. As we have
GROVEDALE
Today we welcome the St Albans Football
& Netball Club to Grovedale as we aim to
get our season back on track after a couple
of lost games that we could have & should
have won. Opportunity keeps presenting
itself but we have yet to take it by the scruff
of the neck & ensure ourselves a place in
the September action. Our reserves led all
day only to relinquish victory in the dying
minutes of the game & our seniors, whilst
competitive for most of the game, again
let a great opportunity slip. The Netballers
also suffered similarly with only our juniors
winning & our senior sides all losing by small
margins, however they have proved they can
mix it with the best.
Congratulations to Tim Barton on reaching
his 150th game & Simon Villani on his 50th
against South Barwon last weekend. We have
a few more guys reaching milestones over the
coming weeks so watch this space for further
updates. With so many of our senior players
being so young we can look forward to some
big achievements over the coming years.
We’ve got a massive day today starting with
our Past Players reunion followed by Mal’s
legendary Counter Teas running into the
Seventies Night. So you don’t have to worry
about heading into town for a big night
out as it’s all at your doorstep with Burdoo
guaranteed to be pumping well into the
night.
ANNUAL DINNER DANCE: Get in early for
your tickets for this great night out. Tickets
are $40.00 each & cover nibbles on arrival
and main meal. This is our premier event of
the season so get behind your Club & contact
Cath on 0424612619 or Kez on 0439038697
for your tickets
SPONSOR OF THE WEEk: Grovedale Meats:
One of our longest & most loyal of sponsors
Ross Morgan has been supplying the Club
with incredible meat packs for our Friday
grovedalefnc.vcfl.com.au
night & game day raffles which generate
exceptional revenue for the Club. With
nothing but the best quality meats you’d be
insane to go anywhere else, so head down
to Peter St & pay Ross a visit for your weekly
meat order.
VOLUNTEER OF THE WEEk:
Sherryn Duff
We all know Shezza because she’s been
around the Club since she could walk, trotting
around with her dad Ray a Club legend
himself. I’m not sure if there is any job Shez
hasn’t done. Our current Netball President,
Shez is also the Football & Sports Club
Secretary, & still finds time to assist in the
Canteen & Bar as well as helping out selling
raffle tickets when she can. A real club hero &
deserving recipient of Life Membership which
Shez was awarded last year.
Today we head to Burdoo Reserve to play the
Grovedale Football Club.
To say we need a win today would be an
understatement. The reserves last week
played well, for a magnificent win for
Lynton’s 300 games, let continue that effort
again today.
Congratulations once again to Lynton
Zavaglia who last Saturday played his 300th
senior game for our Club. Lynton has been
a magnificent player and member of the
Club and the way he goes about his football
typifies true supersaint qualities, have a great
day Lynton I hope your team mates make it a
memorable day for you.
NETBALL
A Grade were outclassed by a tough Joeys
line-up but fought it out till the end Chloe
Thompson, Sarah Jackson and Big Cat (Kath
Asmussen) worked hard all day. B Grade
started slow but to their credit picked up the
pace after a re-shuffle of positions, great
effort by Simone Fulton to switch from G.K
to G.S to shoot 15 goals for the match. Linda
Brasier and young Hailey Thompson also
played well we went down by 10.
C Grade played a fantastic game to beat
2nd placers Joeys, accurate shooting by Tina
Cooke (34) and Sharon Madden (9) secured a
14 goal win. Kristen Grass was outstanding
in W.A. Well Done Girls!! D Grade played
another nail biter great defensive skills
displayed by Pam Maurer, Heather Grass and
Leah Hawker to get the girls over the line by
2 goals Way To Go!! Good Luck to everyone
today against Grovedale. Go Saints!!
JUNIORS
This week we welcome one of our clubs
former champion players back to Drew
Reserve in Leopold Coach, Aaron Greaves. Big
Greavsey hung up his boots last year, and we
can only guess that he has been able to put
his injury problems behind him and found
new inspiration at Leopold that had deserted
him at Joeys. We welcome all the players and
supporters from Leopold, and no question
that we will be challenged a side that is
desperate to get out of the bottom part of
the ladder.
Next week we have our Ladies Day at the
club when we take on Bell Park, and there are
only a couple of seats left so contact Jane
Littore or Michelle Breed if you are trying to
get a seat.
The following week is the night of our
Dinner Auction, which is again being held
at the clubroom. We have some fantastic
items like framed jumpers from the Big V,
Geelong, Collingwood and St Josephs as well
as something special from the Brownlow
Medallist. We have a great band. Food and
MC Barry Cheatley to entertain us. Tickets are
only $60 all inclusive and we are looking for
silent auction items. Contact Mark Jackman
on 0407501288 for your donations or table
Today we travel out to St Josephs and we will
be playing for the Aaron Greaves Cup! All
sides have been in some good form of late
although the senior side just failed against
premiership fancy Bell Park last week.
The Senior Side last week missed a golden
opportunity to knock off a top side in Bell
Park playing some fantastic football for
3 quarters. We were able to have more
scoring shots than the opposition but some
inaccurate kicking probably cost the side
a little. Great players on the day were Jye
Walker who played his best game of the year,
Jason Tom who added another 6 goals to his
total and recruit of the year Tim Marshall who
keeps getting better each week down back.
The Reserves side got away with a lucky win
after controlling the game for the whole
day. A fast finishing Bell Park gave the side a
fright but the Connolly’s Tim and Sam were
fantastic in setting up the win. Matt Kennedy
continues to play well in his first year up
from the juniors and veteran Joe McLean was
again at his best. Another win today for the
boys will help cement their spot on top of the
ladder in their title defence.
The Under 18’s again got away with the
points in a close one. Instrumental in the
win were first year players Jai Thompson and
Dylan Gear in their first year up from the
Under 16’s have been leading the side from
the front. The boys held a comfortable lead
at 3/4 time before some late Bell Park goals
tightened the gap.
Congratulations to Jason Tom, Cameron
Wright and James Walker who were part of
the successful senior interleague side. Also
in the U/18’s we had Ryan Rich, Jacob Storer,
Jai Thompson and Daniel Hovey represent
the side with Ryan Rich taking out player of
the carnival and later that week getting the
call up to play his first senior game replacing
coach Greaves in the senior side. Well done
boys.
This week we welcome Newtown to Hamlyn Park
as we go into battle for the Andrew Mapleson Cup.
With the sponsors / past players luncheon taking
place in the social rooms both sides will have a lot
to play for. Last week the seniors continued their
winning form getting home to defeat Leopold by
28 points at Leopold. Jarrod Garth led the way
kicking 9 goals. Young players Will Newton and
Blake Nelis were the other stars of the game both
displaying courageous acts to inspire their team.
The seconds run of bad luck continued just going
down by 2 points to the top of the ladder Leopold
side. The seconds came from nowhere in the last
quarter to nearly pinch the game. Daniel Piggot
continued his good form as did Matt Talarico and
Simon Kenny. The U18’s also put on a spirited
come back just going down by 3 points. Better
players for the U18’s were Lachlan Szponar, Jarryd
Hood and Jackson Bright who came back from the
senior side this week.
NEWtOWN ChILWELL
Today we travel to Hamlyn Park to take on
Bell Park in crucial games for all three sides.
The Seniors take on the League leaders in
a game that will give the Club a good idea
where they are at the moment with a win
putting them within striking distance from
the top five. The Reserves take on the fifth
place side and another victory today will also
take them to striking distance from the top
five while the Under 18 will continue on with
their good form and if common sense prevails
from Football Geelong will be able to put a
competitive side on the field.
SENIORS: Last week against North Shore,
we started off slowly and by the end of the
first quarter we had a 18 point lead, in the
second quarter the boys started to dominate
the game but for inaccurate kicking could
have had led by more than the 45 point we
were up at half time. In the third quarter we
started slowly and North Shore looked like
they were mounting a comeback, but the
boys the steadied and at the last break our
lead had stretched to 68 points. In the last
quarter it was all Newtown & Chilwell with
16 scoring shots to 3 we run out convincing
winners by 116 points.
Best players were Robert Corneby, Sam
Chapman and Kane Bouch with Michael
Bright, Simon Scott and George Verco each
kicking 3 goals
RESERVES: In competitive first quarter we
held a 9 point lead at quarter time, after
a few harsh words from the coach at the
break we played better in the second quarter
and by half time held a 49 point lead. In a
sluggish third quarter we only increased our
lead marginally and three quarter time led
by 63 points. In the last quarter in which we
dominated we had the same trouble as the
Seniors with inaccurate kicking costing us
a bigger winning margin than the eventual
86 points.
Best players were Tom Veale, David Gray,
newtownchilwellfc.vcfl.com.au
Dylan Hultgren and Dan Evans with Dylan
Hultgren kicking 6 goals, Tom Veale kicking 4
goals and David Gray kicking 3 goals.
UNDER 18 ’S: Playing an undermanned team
the boys increased their lead at every change
and ran out convincing winners by 119
points. The boys will have to learn to be more
disciplined as we had a number of players
sent of for bad language which is not really
acceptable.
Best players were Matt Wapling, Scott
Anderson and John Ryan with Christian
Boulton kicking 6 goals.
SOCIAL NOTES
After the game today it is back to the Great
Western Hotel for a meal and a few drinks as
we support one of our Sponsors and celebrate
today’s games.
GFL UMPIRES
It’s great to hear about our players in GFNL their acheivements and progress, as equally we are proud of the acheivements and development of
our umpires.Last Saturday on St Marys v Lara Katherine Sobey was awarded her B Badge in umpiring .As well Gabby Panayiotou her C Badge. We
would like to congratulate the girls on their great effort.
COLAC
Colac have their biggest road trip for the
year today taking on Lara - we look forward
to some exciting games in the junior grades
with Colac and Lara sides all sitting in the
top 5 - go tigers! Well done again to our B
grade girls last weekend who defeated GWSP
in a close one - it was great to see some of
our u17 girls performing well in that side and
being instrumental in the win - good work
Sarah Murfitt and Georgia Himmalreich. Also
well done to our other U17 girls who perform
in A Grade each week - Sara Morrissy and
Emma McKie we hope we can get back on
the winners list today. Despite some losses
on the netball court all the girls enjoyed their
ladies day last weekend with the theme “A
touch of tiger” and were happy to see some
GWSP’s netballers joining in the festivities.
ST ALBANS
Juniors - U13 - A game that could have
gone either way seen St Albans go into the
last quarter one goal up. The girls played
disciplined netball across the court to come
away with a 5 goal win. BOC: Casey Clarke
15 - Great teamwork saw the girls get off to a
strong start and an 11 goal lead at half time.
Lisa Dunstan and Shenae Solomon worked
hard in defence giving our attack end every
opportunity. BOC: Emily Tuechler
17 - A slow start saw the girls play catch up
all game. Down by 9 going into the last the
girls came out and gave it everything they
had out scoring St Jospehs 10 to 4 and going
down by just 3 goals. BOC: Olivia Cummings
50 GAMES Kristy Lee Hotchin - joined the
St Albans Netball Club in 2006 and plays
her 50th game today. In her short time at
the club she has demonstrated many great
qualities and leads by example. She is a
player that is prepared to put in the extra
effort to achieve her goals. Kristy Lee’s
achievements with the club include:
B Grade Runner Up Best & Fairest, Member
of the player “2007 Leadership Group”,
Respected umpire
Tracey Marshall - also playing her 50th game
today. Tracey started in D Grade 2 years ago
and was promoted to B Grade in 2007. This
was a good year for Tracey taking out the GFL
B Grade goaler award. Tracey is another loyal
club member who supports the club and its
functions.
Good luck to both girls today and hopefully
B Grade can get it all together today for their
first win and your 50th game.
NEWTOWN
Firstly a big thank you to all the ladies that
supported the club’s Ladies’ Luncheon on
Saturday. A huge success, with a full house,
wonderful meal and lots of drinks (a few too
many for some!)
Cath and Bob West returned from their trip to
Hawaii, well rested and well tanned. They had
a fantastic time, and want to express their
thanks to everyone at the Club who were
behind their nomination for the Volunteer
of the Year award. They also want to thank
Jetstar (I would too if I got to travel Business
Class), the Geelong Football Club, and the
Geelong Football Netball League. It was great
to see them get away, but it’s sure good to
have them back. When they are not around,
that’s when you realise just how much they
do.
This weeks games saw good overall results
with the Friday night comp once again.
Saturday comp was a bit of a mixed bag,
with all teams gaining wins except for 17s
(another two goal loss), B and A-grades. All
three losses were extremely disappointing
as, (without taking anything away from
North Shore who were just far hungrier for
the wins), the overall results were not really
indicative of the capabilities of these teams.
Coming off a fantastic team effort against
Lara the week before, A-grade failed to find
that same drive and determination and
allowed North Shore to get a jump start in
the first term, which was too difficult to peg
back over the next three. Congratulations to
17s Dom Taylor who got some court time in
Bs and played extremely well.
Well done to Casey Taylor and Lyndal Dew,
Newtown’s GFL 19/U Netball inter-league
reps, who returned from the bye weekend
in Sale, as members of a champion interleague
team. Both girls played a major part
in the success of the weekend, with Lyndal
achieving Best Player of the Series Award, and
Casey playing well every game, but especially
a fantastic final. Both girls expressed how
much they enjoyed the company of, and the
opportunity to play with others from the
league, and thank Lachlan Carlyle for his
coaching of the team, and Jenny Harwood for
the overall organisation. A great weekend!
LARA
Lara had a rewarding day against St. Mary’s
at the weekend, with A and B both having
strong wins. It was an important round
of the season to win and stability in both
teams played a major role. Senior Coach
Bec Faulmann played a dominant role in the
game, as did Sarah Bromley, Kylie Morrissey
and Helen Barclay in defense. B grade had a
convincing win with strong defensive game
from Gemma Maxwell and Bec Turcinov. Once
again, Lauren Rufus goaled well. Our B girls
are definitely happy with 4 wins and 1 draw
at this stage of the season. Two tough games
are ahead though with Colac this weekend
and Sth Barwon the following week away.
Unfortunately C and D were unable to match
St. Marys and are both still on 1 win each.
Good games from Deb Lane and Kylie Power
in C and Sharron German and Tania Thorpe
in D. Our Div 1 juniors all had good wins and
are sitting comfortably on the ladder; U17
in 3rd spot, U15 4th and U13’s 5th. Good
to see Ash Bond in the 17s and Tahlee
Lane in the 15s listed in best players.
The Div 2 U15s had a close game,
going down by only 1 to St.
Josephs and the U13s
had a fantastic
win by 36 goals
against St. Albans.
We look forward
to our Trivia night
tonight. Thanks to
our Major Sponsor L.
GWSP
Geelong West St Peters had a
successful weekend at Colac,
taking 3 out of 4 wins by senior
teams. A, C and D grade all winning
their matches. Thank you to all
those who came early and stayed late to
cheer and support all our teams.
This week we take on South Barwon at home.
The girls are pumped up and have all been
training hard. C and D grade have a point to
prove this weekend, both wanting to keep
their top of the ladder positions. Let’s make
sure we have lots of support there to cheer
on the girls! Looking forward to seeing a big
army of red and blue! Carn’ the Roosters!
SOUTH BARWON
.....what a great finish to an absorbing a grade
match, with either side unable to break
clear, it took an Olivia Cameron
bomb on the buzzer to record a
memorable 1 goal win, well led by
Olivia and Ainslie and the Hoiles
sisters, Stacey and Caitlin. B, C and
D grades also had good strong wins
with better players, Cassie
Boak and Lauren Ellis,
kylie Lane and Hayley
Barker, Beth Ivermee
and Amber Gibson...
the u13s in a battle of
the undefeated came
out clear winners with
strong performances
from Demi Grant and
Ruby Horton, the
u15s weren’t so
fortunate up
against a strong
the best for the day. The strong u17 team
won comprehensively...in the Friday night
div.2 comp our u17red, u15red and u13 red
teams are all currently on top of the ladder
undefeated after 7 rounds. The u17 blue team
almost broke through for their first win of
the season last week, but had to settle for
another draw. Congratulations this week to
Michaela Stonehouse who plays her 50th
junior game. Also big thanks to Grace for
scoring seniors.
ST. MARY’S
In the senior competition both A & B Grade
suffered a loss at the hands of Lara. C and
D Grade displayed strong performances
producing good wins. The 15&U side had
a close game against Lara and held on to
win by one goal. The 17&U and 13&U were
defeated but displayed some great passages
of play.
The Corio Bay Health Group competition saw
a couple of St Mary’s sides play against one
another on Friday night. The 17&U Blue team
and the 11&U Blue team came out the victor’s
but it was a good tussle by both St Mary’s
sides. It is good to see the St Mary’s 13&U
Blue team continuing to play good netball,
now sitting in third place on the ladder.
BELL PARk
Bell Park had a mixed day against Leopold
winning two out of the seven games. A Grade
had another slow start to be 19 goals down
at half time but only went down by 21 goals.
The team is starting to improve with each
game they play. Bianca Cheever and Emily
Tonner had a good game together in goals.
B Grade had a huge 4 goal win against last
year’s premiers. This was a close game all day
with Bell Park getting the upper hand to win
their third game in a row. Bree Rampal with
19 goals was our best. C and D Grade where
disappointing however they have this week
to redeem themselves. The highlight from the
weekend for the C’s was Jenny Kelly playing
her 100th game for the club. The Juniors had
a good win in the Under 13’s. Meg Wilson’s
20 goal haul was great. The Under 15 and
17 sides were well beaten. On Friday night
Under 13 green won their sixth straight game
to move into second place on the ladder. Our
Under 11’s had other good win. Lisa Stewart
will play her 100 game against Newtown
this week at home. Congratulations Lisa.
Thankyou to our 2008 Netball sponsor: Bell
NORTH SHORE
“It was great work by the 17 and under team
who won their 3rd game this season against
Newtown last week. It’s good to see these
young girls coming up to play in the senior
games also, so well done. B grade celebrated
their 1st win for the year by 11 goals and the
A grade game battled hard to win their 2nd
game by only 2 goals. C and D grade are still
without a win but I’m sure all the hard work
will pay off soon, keep going girls. Well done
to Kelly Carroll who won the match of the
round trophy.
ST. JOSEPH’S
A depleted A Grade outfit still managed
to notch up another impressive win over
St Albans. As is becoming a pattern, Katie
Rossiter again stood up in the absence of
Vikki Madden, showing the coach that she
doesn’t need to hurry back from her green
and gold duties. As was predicted by the
girls, the B Graders played their way out of
their slump to record a solid 10 goal win,
with contributions from all over the court.
Amy Caldow starred from GA, only needing
Caz Morgan to get out of her way as the
ball came down. The C Grade girls were
disappointed to record their first loss for the
year. The Mishizzle shined while Nikki Allen
showed senior netball is certainly within her
reach – I think it’s the relation to the Taylor
family that’s proving to be the key. Our D
Graders will be looking to bounce back after
the loss to St Albans with a strong showing
this. Come back girl Stacey is continuing her
impressive form.
LEOPOLD
It was a fairly good day on the courts for
most of the lionesses last saturday, with 3
wins from 4 against Bell Park, B grade the
only team going down in a close and physical
encounter. Nice to see the sun shining again
too! The A’s put in a solid 4 quarters winning
by 21 goals in the end, KJ had a stellar
performance in WA supported by Nikki in
the middle and Simma in defence. The B’s
had a bit of a messy game and will need to
regroup for this week’s match against St
Joeys. Best: Steph, Jodi and Rach. The C’s are
back on the winners list after a great team
effort. Best: Stace, Mel and Michelle. The D’s
continue with their top form with another
comfortable win under their belt. Every team
member contributed to the great win. I know
they appreciate Sarah Jenson stepping in to
fill a position down the defensive end and
hopefully Nyree is back on the court soon as
she has had a fantastic season so far. Best:
Sarah, Tina and Mandy. Goodluck today girls!
CORIO BAy hEALth GROUp
UTILISING HYDROTHERAPY FOR TRAINING AND RECOvERY - ELOISE ZANONI - PHYSIOTHERAPIST
whether it be a Sunday morning recovery wade at the beach or a structured exercise session in the
pool, hydrotherapy is an excellent way to complement land training, assist in recovery and rehabilitate
the injured athlete.
Water based exercises have many positive
effects on injured joints and soft tissue. The
combination of water buoyancy, pressure
and temperature provide an excellent
environment for an injured body part to
rehabilitate in a supported environment.
Buoyancy decreases the weight bearing load
placed upon a joint – for example, in chest
deep water there is only 10% of body weight
passing though the knee.
For an athlete who has been sidelined by an
injury limiting their ability to run and train,
hydrotherapy is an important tool to assist
with the progression back to full training and
games. Hydrotherapy also provides athletes
with an opportunity to complete aerobic
exercise regimes to maintain their fitness
levels while an injury heals. This is particularly
important for players with long term
injuries who cannot run or train for months.
Hydrotherapy is also useful for athletes prone
to overuse injuries who will benefit from
incorporating low impact cross training into
their regime.
Post competition and training, water provides
early supported movement to clear the
muscles of waste products, loosen tight
muscles and joints, and relieve aches and
Sydney Swans players during a pool
recovery session
pains. The earlier players’ bodies recover, the
sooner they can prepare for the next game.
The speed and intensity of football, especially
when played out on hard grounds, places
more importance on participating in quality
post-game and training recovery.
BEvERIDGE TEAM TOPS TRIvIA & KAROAKE
on Saturday night a fortnight ago the Goal Umpires put on a Trivia and Karaoke Social function which was attended by about 100 members
and friends; a great effort as it was also competing with the Geelong Carlton game. Alan Grant, the Goal Umpires Coach, congratulated
Debbie Cromer for organizing the meal and the kitchen staff, June Grossman and Ann-Marie Villanti for the great job they did in the
kitchen. The three ladies had been working tirelessly in the kitchen preparing food from 11.00am in the morning.
The Goal Umpires’ leadership group, lead
by Paul Holmes, organized a great Trivia
competition and Karaoke event.MC for
the evening, Mark Osborne, did his usual
outstanding job in spite of having no
microphone assistance. A big thank you to all
those who supported the function. We hope
that you all had a really great night. Proceeds
from the function will be donated to assist
Richard Colman in his quest for Olympic
Gold in Beijing. Incidentally, GFUL Chairman,
Brendan Beveridge and his team, won on
the night.
ALAN GRANT & HIS B52’S!
Still on Granty, what about this recent excerpt
from his goal umpire notes: “The B52’s are
still hanging around so those umpires that
know they have a problem with the B52, work
on having your arms down by the side.” I
would just like to ask Alan if this analogy
was derived from observations during the
B52’s Love Shack at the Karaoke Night, or is it
something more specifically to do with Goal
Umpiring!
EYES ALWAYS ON THE BALL RAY!
I seem to have dedicated much of this week’s
Whistle Blower to the Goal umpires, but I
must say they do come under scrutiny at
times. Ray Stephenson was at South Barwon
last week where he took a tumble on the goal
line. He went over backwards with the ball
heading through the sticks and Grovedale
players were right on to it trying to tell him
it was a point (over the post). Ray bounced
back up and signalled the 6 points, assuring
me that he didn’t take his eyes off the ball.
Well done Ray. Just on Ray, I must mention
how professional he was in his appearance
when he was appointed to a TAC game the
other week. His one size fits all uniform was
supplied, but he wasn’t having any of that
and had the strides professionally hemmed
(taken up to fit). I hope the stitching wasn’t
too permanent as the Goalie who next has
to wear the uniform will have to get them
altered again!
GIRLS ON THE INCREASE
Great to see female numbers increasing
rapidly at the GFUL this year with an influx
of young and exciting girls, predominantly
from Sacred Heart College and Matthew
Flinders Girls School, but some from other
schools as well. A total of 14 new girls have
registered to umpire with the GFUL this year
as Field, Boundary and Goal Umpires, with
the prospect of a few more before the end
of the season. Things are looking pretty good
for the future.
MILESTONES
Milestones achieved last weekend included:
Tom Larkins (500 Games), John Hilder (350),
Justin Morris (150) and David West (50)
Having been appointed the Car Driver for last
week I would like to thank those umpires
who let me know if they were going to be at
the pickup or not. A text message or phone
call takes all the stress out of waiting around
at the pick-up
See you back at the rooms after the games on
Saturday evening.
