Presentation of selected test methods
for structural properties
Water absorption
(Testing based onDIN EN ISO 10545-3)
In this test, fired pieces (100 x 100 mm) are weighed, boiled for 2
hours in water and after removal of the excess water weighed again.
By applying
m(wet) - m(dry)
the formula E = · 100
m(dry)
water absorption is calculated (E).
DIN standard: ≤ 0.5 %
Modulus of rupture
(Conform to DIN EN ISO 10545-4)
To determine the modulus of rupture, a certain force at a defined
speed is applied to the center of a dried (TBF) or a fired (BF) test
piece. During the procedure, the test piece rests on two supports
separated by a defined distance. The test is complete as soon as
the test piece breaks.
3 · F · L
R =
2 · b · h
F = breaking force in Newton
L = span in mm
B = width of the test piece in mm
H = thickness of the test piece at the breaking edge in mm
DIN standard: minimum 28 N/mm 2 ;
individual minimum 21 N/mm 2
Thermal shock resistance
(Conform to DIN EN ISO 10545-9)
To determine thermal shock resistance, the tile is exposed to a
temperature cycle of 15°C to 145°C and back 10 times. If no failures
are visible after the test, it meets the DIN standard.
Frost resistance
(Conform to DIN EN ISO 10545-12)
The DIN standard considers a tile frost resistant if it can survive
temperature changes from -5°C to +5°C 100 times without damage.
Slip resistance
(Conform to DIN 51130)
To determine slip resistance, the tiles are mounted on an inclined
plane and walked on. Slip resistance is classified in different classes.
Resistance to abrasion/wear
(Conform to DIN EN ISO 10545-7)
Wear resistance is determined by rotating a wear medium (steel
balls).
Evaluation is by visual comparison with untested samples.
