Hot Wax
Years ago, one Friday morning,
an over the road trucker, Fred (from
Easton, PA), called me on Hot Wax.
He was the second trucker to call
regularly, and he became “Fred, my
second favorite truck driver.” One
year he came to visit the station
with his granddaughters. The eldest,
Jolie, read one or two community
bulletin boards. She was 8 or 9 at the
time, but she was hooked. Several
years later, “granddad” donated to
WDVR by giving her “DJ for an hour”
as a Christmas present.
He has now done that four years
in a row! This year, Jolie, now a high
school sophomore, was not only
poised and professional on the air,
but took over the board with an assist
from “Dead Air” Don. She even
helped me navigate my I-pod more
efficiently (who says old dogs can’t
learn new tricks!). Above is a picture
Fred took of Jolie in the “air chair”
with Dead Air Don and your truly
backing her up. It was fun for us to
see how much she had grown into
the job of being a DJ. We look forward
to having her back next year.
Thanks Fred! Thanks Jolie!
The Monday
Night Soiree
by Tommy J.
It all began as The Friday Night
Soiree on August 7, 2009 with the
Beatles ”Here Comes the Sun.”
Three years later, The Monday Night
Soiree continues to play your favorite
songs, that range in scope from oldies
and contemporary, to classic rock
‘n roll, a smattering of blues, jazz and
country. It is my pleasure to bring you
a radio show that evokes memories
of familiar tunes, coupled with songs
that perhaps you have never heard
before. At least twice a month, I have
a theme based show. Most recently
there have been duos & duets and
rain songs. And it’s always a lot of fun
with my music trivia games.
So how did this all begin? Knowing
my secret alter ego as Tommy
J. the disc jockey, my wife made
a donation to WDVR for DJ for an
Hour. I sat in with Ann Smith for her
entire show and was hooked in the
first five minutes. One more DJ for
an Hour with Richard G. (all about
the Beatles) and I was prepared to
take the next step. After joining several
DJ’s, I learned to run the board
and was later put on the substitute
list. My first gig was Ted Lyon’s
show Honky-Tonk-Roadhouse. My
first official song flying solo was “A
Foggy Day in London Town” by Billie
Holiday. The show went well and the
rest, as they say, is history.
The association I have with this
station and all the volunteers who
keep it running has been a true
delight. Where else could I have
interview Paula Cole or Tommy
James? My listeners are great to
talk with each week, and I can’t wait
for 7pm on Monday to arrive. So if
you’re scanning the dial at that time
and happen to hear “Green Onions”,
stay tuned, find that nice comfortable
chair along with the beverage of your
choice, and brace yourself for the
fastest three hours in radio coming
to you live and in living stereo from
the palatial studios of WDVR fm in
Sergeantsville, N.J., the Paris of
Hunterdon County. §
