Friends of Music contributing to Wayland
By JONATHAN PETTY
Wayland Baptist University
A little more than three
years ago, the Wayland
Baptist University School
of Music embarked on a
plan to build community
support for its students and
programs through an organization
called the Friends
of Music. What started with
fi ve interested and energetic
individuals has blossomed
into an organization that is
now making a signifi cant
impact on the Wayland
music program.
Dr. Ann Stutes, dean of
the School of Music, approached
longtime supporters
Freda and Joe Provence,
Jeannine Greene and Kip
and Barry Vitato about
leading the project. Those
fi ve members formed the
fi rst FOM board and have
sparked a growing interest in
support for the fi ne arts.
“We thought it was a
good idea,” said FOM Board
President Joe Provence. “It
was organized to be an arm
of outreach for the school of
music; to help promote attendance
at the music events
and to help raise scholarship
money.”
In its fi rst year, the group
gave three small scholarships.
“They were more of a
token than anything, to show
we were very intentional
about raising funds for student
tuition support,” Stutes
said.
As the group has grown,
so has the amount of support.
This spring, the FOM
Continued from Page 1C
comment was greeted with
others who were appalled
that such a place existed.
One said she was “creeped
out” and another noted that
a casket store was “bizarre.”
You will know by their comments
that they are in their
30s and 40s.
None of us want to think
about our own death, but it
is inevitable — the one thing
we know will happen in this
life. A friend once told me
when we were looking at a
newborn baby in the hospital
nursery that she was on
her way to death. Shocked,
I asked if the baby had a
disease, to which my friend
replied, “No. It’s just that
when we’re born we start
walking toward our death.”
Another way to look at an
obit and funeral is that we
plan parties and celebrations
for every other occasion in
our lives — birth, marriages,
birthdays and, for some,
divorces — so why do we
leave our fi nal party, so to
speak, to others?
Even if we don’t take the
time to select our casket
and tombstone (I’ve always
admired those tall angels)
in advance, we defi nitely
handed out $13,000 in
scholarships to deserving
students.
Students must apply for
the scholarships. Applicants
are ranked based on merit.
No names or personal information
are included with the
application. Board members
tally the scores based on
ranks, and scholarships are
awarded accordingly. Students
applying also participate
in a scholarship concert
held within the School of
Music.
“This year we had three
times as many apply for
the scholarships,” Provence
said. “It was diffi cult to rate
the kids.”
Stutes said the program
has been benefi cial not just
for the scholarship assistance,
but also for the
relationships the Friends of
Music promote within the
faculty, staff and students.
While scholarships have
been the primary focus
of the Friends of Music,
Provence and the other
board members are preparing
for a major fundraising
project.
Wayland currently has
two concert grand pianos
that the school uses for all
major Harral Auditorium
stage functions. One piano,
however, has fallen apart
and is beyond repair. The
other already has been rebuilt
once, but upon inspection
by Steinway and Sons
representatives, the makers
of the piano, the repairman
used parts that are not approved
by the manufacturers
for that piano.
NEITHER: Planning ahead
should make a list of Bible
passages and favorite poems
and music (I plan on having
the “Hallelujah Chorus” and
“Battle Hymn of the Republic,”
the latter played by a
trio of trumpeters), friends to
be pallbearers (I hope I’m so
old that my pallbearers will
be my friends’ great-greatgrandchildren)
and other
special touches.
A friend recently told me
she had been going through
boxes of family photos and
selecting ones that can be
used in a PowerPoint display
so popular at funerals these
days. I broke out in a cold
sweat remembering that
since I’m the family photographer,
the few snapshots
of me include one of my
two oldest children and me,
9-months pregnant and on
the way to the hospital to
deliver my youngest, standing
on the porch squinting
in the sunlight. Miz Astor,
our Saint Bernard, tried to
jump on me and the camera
clicked just as I stuck out my
leg and shoved her away.
It looks like I was kicking
the dog.
School offi cials have seen
the need for a new concert
grand piano.
“Our nine-foot Steinway
concert grand has far
exceeded the life expectancy
for a concert instrument at
the collegiate level,” Stutes
said. “We are in a critical
situation. We cannot use
it anymore for collegiate
service.”
The School of Music
and Friends of Music are
working with Steinway and
Sons to raise funds for a
new $120,000 grand piano,
specifi cally manufactured
and tuned for performance in
Harral Auditorium.
Steinway technicians have
visited Wayland to determine
the best style piano for the
Harral stage. The next step
is for faculty members and
Provence to visit Steinway
Hall in Dallas, where technicians
will have as many as
nine pianos of the proper style
for faculty members to play
and determine if the instruments
meet their specifi cations.
Steinway then will
bring as many as three pianos
to Plainview where other
faculty members will have a
chance to try the instruments.
When the single instrument is
selected, technicians will tune
it specifi cally for optimum
performance on the Wayland
stage.
In order to complete
the project, the FOM has
set a fundraising goal of
$150,000. This will allow
for the purchase of the new
piano, the rebuilding of the
second piano and provide a
cushion that the School of
The RSVP offi ce will be
closed Monday in observance
of Memorial Day.
This special day is a time to
remember soldiers who died
while in the military. The
holiday was started to honor
soldiers of the Civil War and
extended after World War
I to honor Americans who
have died in all wars.
Through the years, Memorial
Day has become a time
to remember and honor other
deceased loved ones, too.
With Memorial weekend
signaling the start of sum-
mer, it has also taken on
other meanings. All of the
fun activities involved with
summer, including vacations,
start this weekend.
Summer is also a great
time to volunteer. If you
have a morning free once a
week, consider volunteering
at the Museum of the
Llano Estacado. Openings
are available from 9 a.m.
Thursday.
Another museum that
could use your help this
summer is the Hale County
