SUPER STAR
IS BORN
Dear Readers,
12.12.2012 - the birth of
‘The Chennai Outlook –
OMR Edition’
Certain numbers and
their combinations were
traditionally held to be of
magical power by virtue
of their representation of
divine and creative mysteries.
This combination
occurs only once in 100
years. The birth of ‘The
Chennai Outlook – OMR
Edition’ represents a window
of possibility for an
evolutionary leap. It is all
about the power of consciousness.
This opening
is about the realization
of your power to create a
new world on a date that
you globally decide to create
it. A marker is set so
that you would look to
this time and awaken to
the potential of the era
that would follow. The
universal consciousness
has offered the opening
and it is up to humanity
whether they will walk
through and how.
The Chennai Outlook –
OMR Edition will remain
a true crusader to the
whole of OMR community.
It will bring to light the
core issues that had been
pestering the minds of the
socially active residents
who wish to share them
with their neighbourhood
community. This weekly
multi colour tabloid that
reaches 41000 households
covering length and
breadth of OMR every
Saturday will be a medium
to contribute the real
story of the burgeoning
OMR society.
Above all this auspicious
day coincides with 63rd
birthday of Superstar Rajinikanth.
Rajinikanth’s
popularity as coming
from his larger-than-life
super-hero appearance
in many films supported
by gravity-defying stunts
and charismatic expressions
all while attempting
to maintain modesty in
real-life.
We conclude that your
power of consciousness
and support will evoke a
positive response to this
people movement and
make it a grand success.
WORK ON WIDENING OF THE SECOND PHASE EXPECTED
TO BE A NEWYEAR GIFT FOR OMR RESIDENTS
The widening of the
second phase of
Old Mamallapuram
Road (OMR), which is currently
a four-lane stretch
with a median to be extended
into six lanes is expected
to commence anytime now
with Tamil Nadu Road
Development Company
(TNRDC) that manages
Rajiv Gandhi Salai work
on the footpaths and service
lanes is almost nearing
completion.
There is all possibility that
it may be a surprise announcement
by the state
government as a Pongal gift
to residents of OMR. The
state government has sanctioned
Rs. 260 crore in the
month of August towards
land acquisition for the wid-
ening of the second phase of
OMR.
As part of the Phase-II, the
State Highways Department
has proposed to start the
construction from Siruseri
and complete at Poonjeri
where it will join the East
Coast Road (ECR). The
total distance between Siruseri
and Poonjeri is 26.8
km, official sources said.
CONSUMER GUIDE
WATCH WHAT YOU EAT
By its very definition junk
food is nothing but junk,
high in calories and low in
nutritional content. Conservative
estimates point out
that not less than 30 percent
children in big towns are
either obese or overweight
for their age due to their addiction
to junk food. Dieticians
and nutritionists have
unanimously welcomed the
Delhi High court’s order to
crack down on junk food
sales in any school and
their directive to the Union
Health Ministry to extend
the same recommendation
to all other states.
The ever busy parents always
running against time,
find in the packages foods,
a quick answer to satisfy
the kids. But few care to
check how bad or good are
some of the ready to eat
foods available in depart-
- by Jayaraman (Consumer activist)
mental stores and what is
not revealed by the manufactures
about these foods?
This is what the centre for
Science and Environment
(CSE) laboratory checked.
The results were alarming.
And, equally predictable
was the response of big
food companies and their
spokespersons - denials and
dismissals.
Here are some excerpts
from the study done by
CSE, the delhi-based NGO
which tested all brands
readily available in the
fast food outlets and departmental
shop across the
country. These ranged from
instant noodles, chips and
Indian bhujia to the ubiquitous
colas, chicken fries
and burgers.
Dear readers,
an acknowledgement of your contribution. Call : 9043 010011
The department is also
planning for two bypasses
in Kelambakkam and Thiruporur.
The road will connect
13 revenue villages and
about 200 acres of land will
be utilized to widen it. One
by-pass, running to a length
of 4.67 km, will come up in
Padur and reach Thaiyyur-B
village, by-passing Kelambakkam.
Similarly, the other
by-pass of 5.75 km will take
off in Kalavakkam and join
Vengaleri. It will by-pass
Thiruporur and Thandalam.
Widening the road to six
lanes and strengthening it is
imperative, as a lot of development
is taking place beyond
Siruseri, which has a
SIPCOT park. A large number
of residential complexes
and several colleges too
have come up to Thiruporur,
which also witnesses a high
volume of traffic.
Protracted delays led to a
tripling of costs in the first
the project, a retired senior
State Highways Department
official said. The impact
of the cost escalation in the
first phase means TNRDC
will be unable to recover
the project cost from the toll
collections. The monthly
tolling operations on Rajiv
Gandhi Salai starting from
Madhya Kailash to Siruseri
began in December 2008,
work on the road is yet to
be completed. The pedestrians
are forced to walk on
the road as pavements are
unfinished in many places,
says Ambika a resident of
Padur. Water stagnates on
the road when it rains and
streets leading from the
road also get flooded, she
lamented.
slew of residential apartments
coming up along the
IT Corridor. Tamil Nadu
Housing Board (TNHB)
has created a satellite township
at Sholinganallur with
IT Parks, arterial roads,
The TNHB Township of
There are currently about
70,000 people employed in
the IT and BPO companies
along this corridor alone.
The impetus for real estate
development has come from
projections that about an additional
one lakh people will
be employed in the IT belt in
the next one to two years.

POWER YOUR BUSINESS WITH
SBI POS TERMINALS
based income, country’s
largest lender State Bank
of India is planning to
place about 1.50 lakh point
of sale (POS) terminals
for debit and credit card
payments across the country
in the next fiscal. This
was informed by Mr R Vijayaraghavan,
Deputy General
Manager, State Bank of
India at the SBI Merchant
Meet held recently.
Mr Vijayaraghavan said
that the present EOI (expressions
of interest) is
for the purchase of around
1.35-1.50 lacs POS terminals
across the country during
the first year of operations
or 2010-11 and also
The east coast railway
line from Chennai to Puducherry
and Cuddalore,
via Mamallapuram, may
now be built with private
participation. The railway
ministry has included the
523 crore project on a list
of 37 projects that could
be handed over to private
firms.
The project part of the
proposed Chennai-Kanyakumari
coastal line has
been approved by the railway
board to provide a
link to fast developing areas
along the Old Mahabalipuram
Road (OMR).
The 179km line, to be laid
between OMR and the East
Coast Road, is expected
to connect Sholinganal-
for the managed services
during the warranty period
or the first year of deployment
in its Request For
Proposal (RFP). The last
date for submission of bids
is January 25. SBI plans to
deploy six lakh POS terminals
in the first five years of
its operations, he said.
The merchant acquiring
business would be carried
out through a whollyowned
subsidiary, which
would include acquiring
bank identification
numbers (BINs) from the
schemes, as well managing
services for PoS terminals
among others.
The managed services
would include deployment
lur, Kovalam , Tiruporur,
Mamallapuram, Kalpakkam,
Koovathur, Cheyyur,
Marakkanam, Kunimedu,
Kuiyilappalayam , Jipmer
in Puducherry, Bahour ,
Varakalpattu, Tirupadipuliyur
and Cuddalore Fort.
“As of now, railways is
doing the project but may
want to consider different
options because of the
huge cost involved and the
need to finish it fast,” said
a senior Southern Railway
official.
The new line is to be
taken up as a “socially
of PoS terminals at customer
location, their replacement,
merchant training
and maintenance among
others. SBI has introduced
Cash Back Scheme for
both merchant and customers
for using SBI debit card
on SBI PoS terminal.
Merchants from major
commercial establishments
participated in large numbers
and aired their grievances.
Mr P V Rajamani,
Assistant General Manager,
Merchant and Banking
Division was present on
the occasion. More details
can be had from their nearest
branch of State bank of
India.
EAST COAST RAILWAY LINE TO
CONNECT PUDUCHERRY AND
CHENNAI VIA OMR
desirable” project and the
railway has not mentioned
any rate of return for the
investor. The railway line
was sanctioned in the
supplementary budget of
2007, but only 26 crore
was sanctioned in subsequent
years for land survey
, location survey and
other preliminary works
. Meanwhile, the cost escalated
from 523 crore to
800 crore . The final location
survey was done in
2011. “Going by the rate
at which the ministry is
able to sanction funds the
line will take more than 10
years to complete.
This is the reason the
railway board is looking
at different options, including
privatisation of
the works. The board is
yet to finalise the model in
which the project will be
taken up,” he added. To
execute such projects, a
cost sharing-freight rebate
model, full contribution
model, under-a-specialpurpose
vehicle model
and private line model
have been proposed. The
terms and conditions say
the land will be acquired
and owned by railways.
The ministry has mooted
private participation for
new lines, gauge conversion,
doubling and to lay
third line because several
projects are being delayed
due to slow sanctioning of
money. Every project may
not get full funds because
money will have to be allocated
for all projects
being carried out in the
country.
OMR GREENS - A NEW BEGINNING
FOR A CLEAN OMR
Residents of Mantri
Synergy apartments
in OMR as
part of their community
initiative OMR Greens
involved themselves in
cleaning the Sai Temple
in Kelambakkam on 2 December.
A strong team of about a
dozen members of OMR
Greens carrying placards
started on an awareness
walk from Mantri Synergy
apartments to Sai Temple.
Placards highlighted
on green initiatives like
keeping the surroundings
clean, against dumping of
garbage, mosquito menace
etc.
OMR Greens on reaching
the temple got down
to cleaning up the garbage
littered in and around the
temple. Kelambakkam
Panchayat president, Mr
G Venkatesan participated
and appealed to OMR
Greens to organize a similar
campaign on Kelambakkam
Main Road near
the petrol station during a
weekend. He further made
arrangements to shift the
garbage by tractor trolley
and deployed a couple of
tricycles to carry them.
Sai Temple head priest
Sri Acharya in his part
had arranged for planting
a few samplings of pongai
near the temple to mark
the event. This is the third
campaign since the launch
of OMR Greens in September
last.
Earlier OMR Greens
were involved in cleaning
the garbage heap close
to Hindustan University
and another at the main
road junction at Padur.
OMR Green team comprises
of Pravin, Pandian,
Bala, Shine, Santhakumar,
Neeraj, Pandey, P S Sridhar
and family, Gopalan,
Viswanath, Vasu, GVK
and family. Mr S Kumar
of Saravana Medicals took
much effort to organize
the campaign.
It is significant to make
a special mention about
Aravind an enthusiastic
school student who took
much pain in helping the
volunteers while cleaning
the temple. Employees of
the Sai Temple too cooperated
well with the volunteers
of OMR Greens.
