WORK ON WIDENING OF THE SECOND PHASE EXPECTED
TO BE A NEWYEAR GIFT FOR OMR RESIDENTS
The widening of the
second phase of
Old Mamallapuram
Road (OMR), which is currently
a four-lane stretch
with a median to be extended
into six lanes is expected
to commence anytime now
with Tamil Nadu Road
Development Company
(TNRDC) that manages
Rajiv Gandhi Salai work
on the footpaths and service
lanes is almost nearing
completion.
There is all possibility that
it may be a surprise announcement
by the state
government as a Pongal gift
to residents of OMR. The
state government has sanctioned
Rs. 260 crore in the
month of August towards
land acquisition for the wid-
ening of the second phase of
OMR.
As part of the Phase-II, the
State Highways Department
has proposed to start the
construction from Siruseri
and complete at Poonjeri
where it will join the East
Coast Road (ECR). The
total distance between Siruseri
and Poonjeri is 26.8
km, official sources said.

place about 1.50 lakh point
of sale (POS) terminals
for debit and credit card
payments across the country
in the next fiscal. This
was informed by Mr R Vijayaraghavan,
Deputy General
Manager, State Bank of
India at the SBI Merchant
Meet held recently.
Mr Vijayaraghavan said
that the present EOI (expressions
of interest) is
for the purchase of around
1.35-1.50 lacs POS terminals
across the country during
the first year of operations
or 2010-11 and also

Coast Road, is expected

date for submission of bids
is January 25. SBI plans to
deploy six lakh POS terminals
in the first five years of
its operations, he said.
The merchant acquiring
business would be carried
out through a whollyowned
subsidiary, which
would include acquiring
bank identification
numbers (BINs) from the
schemes, as well managing
services for PoS terminals
among others.
The managed services
would include deployment
lur, Kovalam , Tiruporur,
Mamallapuram, Kalpakkam,
Koovathur, Cheyyur,
Marakkanam, Kunimedu,
Kuiyilappalayam , Jipmer
in Puducherry, Bahour ,
Varakalpattu, Tirupadipuliyur
and Cuddalore Fort.
“As of now, railways is
doing the project but may
want to consider different
options because of the
huge cost involved and the
need to finish it fast,” said
a senior Southern Railway
official.
The new line is to be
taken up as a “socially

the land will be acquired
and owned by railways.
The ministry has mooted
private participation for
new lines, gauge conversion,
doubling and to lay
third line because several
projects are being delayed
due to slow sanctioning of
money. Every project may
not get full funds because
money will have to be allocated
for all projects
being carried out in the
country.

cleaning the Sai Temple
in Kelambakkam on 2 December.
A strong team of about a
dozen members of OMR
Greens carrying placards
started on an awareness
walk from Mantri Synergy
apartments to Sai Temple.
Placards highlighted
on green initiatives like
keeping the surroundings
clean, against dumping of
garbage, mosquito menace
etc.
OMR Greens on reaching
the temple got down
to cleaning up the garbage
littered in and around the
temple. Kelambakkam
Panchayat president, Mr
G Venkatesan participated
and appealed to OMR
Greens to organize a similar
campaign on Kelambakkam
Main Road near
the petrol station during a
weekend. He further made
arrangements to shift the
garbage by tractor trolley
and deployed a couple of
tricycles to carry them.
Sai Temple head priest
Sri Acharya in his part
had arranged for planting
a few samplings of pongai
near the temple to mark
the event. This is the third
campaign since the launch
of OMR Greens in September
last.
Earlier OMR Greens
were involved in cleaning
the garbage heap close
to Hindustan University
and another at the main
road junction at Padur.
