Under the direction of the CCA board of directors and breed improvement committee the staff have begun a major switch in data collection storage and analysis systems. The performance and pedigree data is being migrated to a commercial provider called the Agricultural Business Research Unit (ABRI). ABRI is the leader in beef breed registry software and this movement is underway not only to improve upon our reporting and analysis procedures but also to decrease maintenance and fixed costs. Concurrently the Breed Improvement Committee has requested that staff of RAK Genetic Consulting Ltd. revamp the breed improvement section of the Canadian Charolais website. This site will be accessible through the regular Canadian Charolais website as www.Charolais.com or as http://performance.charolais.com.
Eligibility for Publication Progeny Proven Sires To be eligible for publication in the CCA Sire Summary, a bull must: 1) have had at least 10 calves with CHARM weaning records in the last 3 years. 2) meet an accuracy standard of .50 in the weaning weight EPD evaluation. Weaning weight is used as the selection criteria as it is least subject to bias and is the trait that is best represented across herds and sires. EPD and accuracy values are published for all traits for the sires selected. All sires listed in this section have enough performance-tested progeny to be considered as predictable. Interpreting the Sire Summary Young Sires To be eligible for publication in the CCA Sire Summary a young bull must: 1) be born on or after January 1, 2002. 2) have an accuracy of .35 or greater for weaning weight EPD. 3) have had at least 2 calves with CHARM weaning records. Young sires with higher accuracies (.50 or greater) may also appear in the progeny proven section. This section is intended to provide information on young sires with potential for use in breeding programs. The EPDs expressed should be carefully considered as some accuracies may be fairly low. Trait Leaders Active Progeny Proven sires identified from the bull evaluation as trait leaders are those that excel in a specific trait. To be selected for the trait leader designation a bull must meet superior standards for both the EPD and the accuracy of the trait in question. The sires designated as (TL) throughout the proven section include the top 25 for each trait based on EPD values with accuracy values of .75 or greater for birth weight and weaning weight and .65 or greater for yearling weight and total maternal, and .60 or greater for the Milk EPD. Ties for any trait were broken by taking the animal with the higher accuracy first.
