18 How smart is your driving? Most car drivers could be travelling a lot further on a tank of fuel. No new car is required – just a change to smarter driving. Try these tips: • Shift up the gears earlier (between 2000 and 2500rpm). Cruising comfortably in 5th gear is the best place to be. • Cut your top speed. Wind resistance increases significantly with speed. The optimum speed for fuel efficiency is 45-50mph. • Avoid unnecessary braking by anticipating the traffic ahead. Fluid motion is better than stop start. • When slowing down, stay in gear and take your foot off the accelerator as early as possible. This reduces fuel consumption to near zero. • Plan your route to avoid congestion or getting lost. Smarter driving could save you the equivalent of about one month’s worth of fuel each year. Village News and Events Slimming World in Fairford Leys Youth Worker’s loss is a great gain; Youth Worker’s life is turned around! Fairford Leys Youth Club leader Corrina Pierce has achieved dramatic weight loss which has changed her life in many ways. Since the year 2000, Corrina recognised she was overweight, felt as if she was in a big black hole and could not see a way out of it. This compounded her unhappiness. When she started running the Fairford Leys Youth Club on behalf of Coldharbour Parish council in May 2007, she felt she was unable to actively contribute to all the physical activities within the club. Feeling so at a loss with her weight, Corrina decided enough was enough as her own happiness and perception were at her lowest and shopping for clothes was no longer enjoyable. She tried numerous diets and quick fixes which did not prove successful and finally decided to join her local Slimming World Club at the Fairford Leys Centre after a leaflet was dropped through her door, offering support and motivation to lose weight. Corrina says “I went along to join Slimming World on my own the first night and felt nervous to start with. I was soon made to feel at ease and formed friendships with other members which have helped me tremendously. I have also been able to encourage and support other members in the group.” She goes on to say “I now exercise daily by walking and riding my bike, which I had forgotten how to do! I have found the healthy eating plan (not diet) easy to follow and both my husband and I have made this a way of eating for life now. After losing 5st 4lbs, I am now much happier and have more energy to actively support the youngsters at the Youth Club. I have now rekindled my love for clothes shopping, and even bought a bikini to wear on holiday this year!” Jane Barlow Slimming World Editor’s Note I hope you have enjoyed this latest edition of Coldharbour News. It seems to include lots of pictures this time, particularly of flowers and gardens. I make no apology for this as I believe it illustrates the pride that most residents take in their homes and gardens. If you have missed the regular gardening column by Cllr Claire Houston, don’t worry, Claire will be back in the next edition full of ideas for the winter garden and preparations for spring. Appeal for articles Many of you have told me how much you enjoy reading about what is happening in and around Fairford Leys. However, the newsletter is only as comprehensive as the articles I receive. To those of you who continue to send me articles, thank you very much – it would be a very poor newsletter without them. Cllr Sally Pattinson Editor Good news stories from your local PC I have managed to track down the mini motorbike riders and they have been issued with a section 59 warning regarding the use of the bikes in the football fields the next time they are seen the bikes will be seized and crushed. I would like to thank the local residents for their input regarding this, which was raised at the NAG meeting In light of complaints from residents regarding speeding following the SID (speed indicator device) operation in June, Officers from the Road Safety Partnership and the Neighbourhood Team attended Arncott Way in August between 5pm and 7pm – the results were that 17 vehicles were caught speeding and 10 of those were in excess of 37mph and received a fixed penalty ticket and 3 points on the licence or were offered the driver improvement scheme, the other 7 were then given speed awareness advice by Nigel Spencer from Bucks County Council road safety team. Most interestingly the main culprits lived on Arncott Way and surrounding roads, but all were from Fairford Leys. Be warned speeding is not tolerated we will be repeating this venture in the future. Following the “have your say meeting” I am happy to report that we had an excellent response in relation to the amount of NAG representatives for the Fairford Leys area, which will give Fairford Leys a better representation in the meeting. PC Nicki Tipping Fairford Leys Neighbourhood Policing Team Rosemary Conley – ‘Kids 2’ A limited number of places are still available for ‘Kids 2’. This is a brand new programme for Rosemary Conley Diet and Fitness Clubs to work with children and families. It has been devised, developed and piloted by Rosemary Conley Diet and Fitness Clubs over the last three years. This six weeks course aims to introduce children and their parents - in a very simple and fun way – to the importance of a healthy, balanced diet and regular exercise. The course is designed for children and parents to learn together as this improves the prospects for their long-term success. NO foods are banned and the emphasis of the course is NOT on weight loss. At our classes children do not have to perform to a certain standard or compete with those who are more physically able in order to feel a sense of achievement. They will be rewarded simply for turning up and enjoying what is on offer. Our next course starts October 2009 Enjoyment is the key – and this is what our Kids 2 Programme is all about!
