Gawler, aims to develop
inquiring and knowledgeable
young people with a
commitment to lifelong
respect
• Tolerance of other
view points
• The need for a more
peaceful and
sustainable world.
This will be achieved through
the development of programs
delivered through the lens of
1 A short biography about myself. Welcome to the beginning of the new
school year for 2011. I am excited to be able to share this part of your child’s
educational journey. I look forward to a happy year filled with challenges and
successes as we dive into learning together. I am married to Peter and we live
in Mawson Lakes with four children and our dog, Lucy. I have worked at
Immanuel for three and a half years, throughout the junior primary levels. I
love travelling and have enjoyed visiting Thailand, Singapore, England,
Scotland, China, Hong Kong, Argentina, Brazil and USA. I enjoy going out for
meals, visiting friends and family and walking the dog.
2) How can you support your child at home and school?
Learning to read is one of the first big steps at school. There is an excitement about it, a challenge and it
is wonderful to see confidence blooming! To help develop this good life time habit, here are some ideas
to help children turn into avid readers!!!
a) Find a quiet place to sit comfortably together away from distractions and read to them every
day. It is the best way to develop a love of reading. Read every day yourself and let the children
see you enjoying it. (Easier said than done, with busy lives these days.)
b) Talk with your children every day. Good talkers usually become good readers and writers.
c) Praise your child’s reading efforts and let them share with other willing listeners such as
Grandparents, and make it a 50/50 split with your partner. Children need to model themselves
on both parents and fathers play an important role in encouraging sons to read.
d) Use the story and pictures to help your child guess new words. Ask “What do you think it could
be?” Use first letter sounds to help give an idea. If possible model sounding out a word for your
child to guess. They will often be able to blend the sounds you make to form the word, before
they are able to do this task independently. Then go on with the story. If on a second reading
he/she cannot remember the word, tell them again and if they can remember – great! Praise!
e) Discuss the story afterwards, using: When? Why? What? And What if? Discuss the favourite and
least favourite parts. This helps to develop comprehension.
f) Don’t compare one child’s reading progress with another’s. Remember each learns to crawl,
walk and talk at different times. It is the same with reading. Remain positive and end reading
times with a warm hug and a few words of praise for the effort given.
It is also important children have a good night’s sleep. This is “brain” time and a well rested child will
perform better at school and at home.
Helping your child prepare for their school day is important. Making sure they have everything they will
require: recess, lunch, brain food (optional), drink bottle, show ‘n’ tell (if it’s their day) and their hat.
Every day your child requires the best start possible. This begins with arriving to school on time. By
ensuring your child is punctual to school will enable them to be prepared for the day ahead. Many
children feel anxious and worried if they arrive late.
3) Weekly Overview
3
• Each Monday morning at 9:00 am Immanuel begins the week as a whole school with flag raising
and the National Anthem under the shelter, certificates to celebrate students that exhibit the
Learner Profiles, Student Leadership Reports and acknowledging birthdays of students in
Reception-Year 3.
• Banking is on Tuesday. Students are to place their bank books into the message box first thing in
the morning.
• Students are to wear sports uniform on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.
• Lunch orders are on Friday; however, they need to be ordered on Thursday morning. There are
spare lunch order forms in the front office.
• Library borrowing is on Thursday. Students need to bring their library bag on this day to enable
them to borrow.
• Worship and Praise is on Friday morning at 9:00am. It would be great if you could join us. These
are led by classes, parish pastors, special guests and teachers. You will be informed when our
class is presenting Worship and Praise through a class newsletter.
4) Daily Routines
Students are expected to be at school by 8:55am. This is when they prepare themselves for the day
ahead. In year 2/3 we encourage students to prepare themselves for the day ahead and to slowly
become more independent. When students arrive in the morning they are to move their name on the
registration board to indicate that they are present, place drink bottles, brain food and pencil cases on
their desks, settle with a self-starter at their table with their Family Learning Journal Folders open. When
the 9:00am bell goes they are to wait behind their desk until their family learning is marked. Once
completed, they pack up their activity and wait quietly on the mat.
5) Brain food
Children are allowed to keep a small container of brain food on their desks. Brain Food is to consist of
fresh or dried fruit pieces or vegetable pieces. Please ensure that it is cut up into manageable pieces.
Class teachers will designate suitable times throughout the day for students to enjoy a healthy snack
(Please no nuts as this is a nut free school)
6) Drinks in the classroom
Children are allowed to have their drinks in the classroom if their bottles are filled with water only.
7) Family Learning
Students will be expected to learn their spelling words each night along with reading. Year 2/3 students
have 8 spelling words each week. In the lead up and duration of our multiplication unit students will
also be required to learn various multiplication facts for homework. These will be assessed at various
times throughout the unit of work and beyond. Family learning is marked each morning. If your child is
unable to complete their spelling and reading I ask that a note is written. Students who do not complete
4
their spelling and reading and do not have a note, will be required to complete it during recess and
lunch.
8) Communication
If you have any messages for me please use your child’s family learning journal as a form of
communication. If students have a note I expect that they will show it to me in the morning. I will also
be using their family learning journals as a form of communication with you. Therefore it would be great
if you could check these on a regular basis. If your child is late or away from school it is school policy that
you send a written explanation on the section supplied in your child’s family learning journal.
9 Class Carer
As we grow as a community, it is important that we are vigilant in maintaining a welcoming, inclusive
and supportive school environment. Immanuel Lutheran will be continuing the concept of class carer
this year. Further information regarding this role can be obtained from the ‘Carer’s pamphlet’. Please let
me know if you are interested in supporting our school through the class carer program.
10) Making an appointment
Morning catch-ups are often difficult as my priorities are the morning meeting/devotion and getting
ready for the day. Please write a note for simple information or make an appointment via the front
office or your child’s family learning journal. I want concerns addressed sooner rather than later and so
an appointment time will enable me to give your concern my full attention.
11) Behaviour Education
Within our classroom I will be focusing on students’ positive behaviour. It is important to recognise
those students who respect each other and themselves by following the class essential agreement.
Students who behave inappropriately may be required to have some thinking time, focusing on our
coloured spot behaviour or spend time to re-focus in a buddy class.
12) Who else is involved in your child’s learning?
• Japanese: Mrs. Kara Holder
• Health and/or Sport: Mr. Simon Wundersitz
• Auslan: Miss. Jane-Marie Pfeiffer
• Support Staff: Miss. Jane-Marie Pfeiffer ,Mrs. Belinda Wilson and Mrs. Sue Supple.
13) International Baccalaureate-Primary Years Programme
5
Immanuel Lutheran School is a candidate school for the International Baccalaureate Primary
Years Programme. We are planning to be an authorised World School this year and each
teacher is currently planning, teaching and assessing within these guidelines. The South
Australia Curriculum Standards and Accountability Framework sits alongside the Primary Years
Programme.
The International Baccalaureate® (IB) is a non-profit educational foundation, motivated by its
mission, focused on the student.
The IB does not own or manage any schools. Instead, it works with schools around the world
(both state and privately funded) that share their commitment to international education.
Authorisation to become an IB World School is an intensive process that typically takes two or
more years and includes site visits by an IB team.
A regular process of evaluation is undertaken by schools that have been authorised. For
information please visit http://www.ibo.org/pyp/
The curriculum is organised under six broad themes and teachers plan and teach one unit under
each theme each year. More information will be presented during the year at regular parent
nights. Included in the class handbook is an overview of the units your child will be studying this
year.
14) Special Events
• Parent / Teacher sharing will be completed by the end of Week 5, Term 1. This will give us an
opportunity for you to inform us of any concerns, medical issues and important information you
wish to discuss with us regarding your child. We can then address these sooner rather than
later.
• All year 2/3 students will be going on camp together this year. Camp is going to be held in Week
2, Term 4 (27 th -28 th October). Students will be travelling via bus to and from Nunyara
Conference Centre. Further information regarding camp will be provided closer to the date.
• Swimming will occur in Week 6, Term 4. Further information will be provided closer to the date.
• Please check our website (www.ilsg.sa.edu.au) frequently for newsletters, updates and changes.
