of. They join an elite group of
1.530 registered nurses serosa the
United States who have achieved
the designation of certified regis
lered nurse, hospice (CRNH).
To receive the CRNH certifi-
cate, the three nurses, who are
with Community Hospice Ser-
vice*. had to pas* en eitensive
four hour written examination,
given March 18.
"The title of CRNH is the ne
tionaJ recognition for professional
EX.-ellence through knowledge and
application of all aspect* of boa-
pice care." said Peterson, patient
care coordinator for Community
Hospice Services "It ia an honor
for us personally and profession
ally to be seen as leaders in hos-
pice care"

was a self-imposed goal.

"The examination gave me an
opportunity to demand of myself
• focused period of concentrated
review and study of the current
materials pertaining to hospice
nursing." she said. "Besides, I
knew thst if I took this exam with
my co-workers we would hold
each other accountable, snd it
worked."

Different emphasis
The hospice concept of care
places an emphasis on palliative
care — state-of-the-art relief of
pain and other distressing aymp
toms related to an illness. Hoe
pice believes that the quality of
life and dignity of the individual
become the primary concern when
physical healing la no longer
achievable.
Hospice care oeither hastens
nor postpones death.' A highly
specialized interdisplinary team
deliver* the care, and patient*
and their families become an inte-
gral part of that team. Hospice fo-
cuses on enabling the patient to
live each day in the peace and
comfort they deserve
Working in hoapice is a labor of
love for these nurses.
The greatest fulfillment I've
experienced in hospice nursing ia
being able to come alongside a
family who desires to care for
their loved one and instruct, en-
courage. and support them in
doing so," said Dearbaugh.
"When a patient is able to have
his symptoms well managed and
die a peaceful death, I often hear
the family aay that they didn't
feel helpless.
"The families always aay thank
you for helping. I'm grateful to be
a part of the team that can work
to make tha and of eomeonea life
as meaningful aa the beginning of
that life"

ney. "As I meet eoch new patient
and family, I am deeply moved to
be invited into their home, a
stranger allowed to participate in
the intimacy of thia special jour-
ney. I see hoapice nursing aa life
changing and life giving.
"There is a heroic devotion by
loved ones in walking the journey
with the patient. There is valor,
forgiveneas, humor, gratitude, sor-
row, tears, and laughter, some-
times all within a five-minute
time span. I find it impoeaibie to
walk away unaffected by
special people."
