An Important Collection of Historic Building Complexes
Smithfi eld Farringdon contains many of the most extensive
building complexes in London. Despite the size of these - and
Smithfi eld Market is the largest wholesale market in Central
London in terms of footprint - they retain a human scale at
street level. This is particularly evident along Charterhouse
Square, Long Lane, West Smithfield, Smithfield Street,
Snow Hill, Charterhouse Street and Cloth Fair. Britton Street,
Cowcross Street, and St John’s Lane contain buildings which
collectively contribute to a strong sense of place.
The aerial photograph shows the continuing integrity of the
markets complex, despite the fact that it has changed over
the years as a result mainly of war damage. The listed Poultry
Market dating from the 1960s respects the scale, height and
bulk of the original complex.
The market complex
is unique in terms of its
identity and scale within
Central London
